“three more months of school to go, but i've run out of lunch ideas. i really need some help. kid#1 will eat anything kid#2 doesn't like carbs kid#3 VERY suspicious & picky eater. likes the cookies & treats best. no-nuts rule applies. assorted rejects/losers this week: any deli meat sandwiches, lettuce, oranges, cheese, this is driving me crazy. HELP ME PLEASE!” 7:43:57 AM 3/26/04 “What are my kids eating for lunch? Whatever their wives packed for them.” 8:14:56 AM 3/26/04 “tortillas rolled up with pizza sauce and pepperonis and mozarella cheese. beef jerky nuggets and cut up veggies?” 8:16:07 AM 3/26/04 “I thought I was the only one who has this nightmare. Aren't kids eating machines? Don't they consume anything edible within a few feet of them as a shark would feast on its prey? Seriously, my daughter won't eat sandwiches unless it's store bought, wrapped in wax paper and done within 3 minutes of her taking off for school. I'm not forking out 4 to 5 bucks a shot every day for a sandwich that I could make for 1/3 the price. So, she now goes for the school lunch. Thank goodness for small favors. My son used to take sandwiches and the like, but has grown tired of everything I try to give him, no matter what it is. I am so familiar with what he doesn't want. Maybe a suggestion as to what he DOES want would be helpful, but i don't get that. So, I don't pack anything. If he wants to eat, the school lunch is free for him. I tried. What am I going to do at this point?” 8:16:49 AM 3/26/04 “Just pack them an enertia meal, an alcohol stove and a spoon. Geez, they are backpacker's kids, ya know.” 8:28:40 AM 3/26/04 “let's see, my mommy used to give me...yogurt, graham crackers w/peanutbutter, celery w/cream cheese, trail mix, dried fruit, banana bread...” 8:30:10 AM 3/26/04 “Sponge Bob Macaroni and Cheese!” 8:31:33 AM 3/26/04 “Ritalin?” 8:32:02 AM 3/26/04 “How old are these kids? By the time I was 8 or 9 I was packing my own lunch for school.” 8:33:03 AM 3/26/04 “"Are we there yet?" "No!" "Are we there yet?" "No!" "Are we there yet?" "No!" "Are we there yet?" "No!" "Are we there yet?" "No!" "Are we there yet?" "No!" "Are we there yet?" "No!" "Are we there yet?" "No!"” 8:33:09 AM 3/26/04 “"Ritalin," ROTFLMAO!” 8:34:30 AM 3/26/04 “When I was a kid it was eat what was put in front of you or go hungry. My parents grew up in the depression and believed you should be thankful you had something to eat and don’t complain.” 8:47:10 AM 3/26/04 “I got PB&J every day when I was in high school.” 8:49:52 AM 3/26/04 “"Ritalin?" Tilt 08:32:02 AM 03/26/04 ignore this user tilt that is mean, accurate and very funny. thanx lyra & sass for your ON-TOPIC answers. more info: kid #3 is the big problem. he is suspicious of anything that may be new/ different. and he is a bunny plate candidate. no mac & cheese (weirdo) no tortillas no melted cheese (mini pizzas included) nothing that might hide cooked fruit in it no cream cheese and school says no nuts” 8:55:56 AM 3/26/04 “i tried the eat-what-is-put-in-front-of-you routine, but then he just bargined some food from the other kids. or he goes to the office to raid the stash of emerg(forgotmylunch)food. and anyway i still ended up throwing his uneaten lunch away.” 9:01:59 AM 3/26/04 “Then don't give him any lunch and let him fend for himself, since that's what he's doing anyway. Saves you money and he eats what he wants.” 9:04:07 AM 3/26/04 “yeah, then i get a call from CAS” 9:05:38 AM 3/26/04 Ideas “With my son it is his responsibility each night to pack his lunch for the next day, except for the sandwich. He's been doing that since 1st grade. He has to decide what his sandwich will be, then he makes it in the morning. For the kids who will eat cream cheese, how about cream cheese spread on Pepperidge Farm cinnamon bread. mmmmmmmmm Or just a couple slices of cheese on bread. Or (this idea is kind of invovled) send a sliced english muffin along with a bit of pizza sauce, mozzerella cheese, and pepperoni slices. They can make two mini pizzas at school. Or apple slices and pretzel sticks with peanut butter to dip it into. Or crackers and cheese and sausage or pepperoni. Or tuna and crackers. Or forgo the sandwich concept all together. Sometimes instead of a sandwich, my son will take two frozen Gogurts. The rules for his packing are one fruit, one juice, a sandwich or yogurt, one crunchy (chips/pretzels, and one treat. When he was given control of making his lunch, he became much more willing to eat it since he had the control. I keep one shelf in the cabinet and one area of the fridge just for his lunch stuff. The key is give them ideas, maybe keep a list on the fridge, but make them pick what they want from the list. They become much more willing to eat something when they think it was their idea in the first place. And make them pack the lunch the night before. It's a good easy responsibility for them.” 9:17:09 AM 3/26/04 “Hmmm.... Sounds like I hit the trifecta.” 9:17:33 AM 3/26/04 “I send in a check every couple of weeks and the school does the cooking. Way too much of a pain in the arse to worry about packing a lunch.” 9:50:05 AM 3/26/04 “Vicsaw's idea sounds good to me. Sounds like the kids are testing Mom. A gourmet lunch would probably not be adequate. Make 'em figure it out themselves. One of two things will happen. Either they'll step up and take responsibility, or they'll decide that Mom's ideas weren't so bad after all.” 9:56:24 AM 3/26/04 “They are not my kids! Never seen her before and no, you can't have a DNA sample. I'm sorry. reflex response. I can't eat Grape Jelly to this day b/c we had PB & Grape forever until I told my mom "no more, please!" Still love PB&Strawberry Jam, however.” 9:57:16 AM 3/26/04 “PB & Strawberry is a very good combo. Espec with a big glass of cold milk!” 10:43:38 AM 3/26/04 “Cheese Yogurt Fruit Milk Cookies Same every day (fruit varies). Breakfast and dinner provide balance and variety.” 10:55:21 AM 3/26/04 “"I got PB&J every day when I was in high school." Geobeet I personally, ate at the school every day, and I don't have any kids.. But, my brother has the same thing every single day - peanut butter an honey, granola bar, chocolate milk. My dad does the same thing... every day, no matter if he's working, or at home, he'll have peanut butter and honey, fritos, apple sauce, and milk.” 11:00:29 AM 3/26/04 “water and a dry heel of bread? ;)” 12:37:39 PM 3/26/04 “An Old Milwaukee followed by a pint of Boddington's Pub Ale. Life is lookin' pretty damn good right 'bout now! I'm saving space for the 2" thick T-bone grilled to perfection over a campfire of apple wood tonight.” 12:41:51 PM 3/26/04 “OOPS! I thought this was the regular what are YOU having for lunch thread! Sorry! Note: No children were give any alcoholic fluids during the writing of this post.” 12:43:58 PM 3/26/04 “I believe I'll have another big orange.” 12:45:11 PM 3/26/04 “ Drink Goat's milk -- Feel Like a Kid Again. 12:52:38 PM 3/26/04 “What did Laurel have for lunch? Homemade bean soup (she loves beans-uh oh!) and cheerios, her favorite munchy.” 12:55:23 PM 3/26/04 “No food for lunch for the wife's kid. Only gets fed in the morning and at night. By the way "her" kid is a dog. PS Still a wierd day.” 2:16:20 PM 3/26/04 “i let them eat the lunch they serve at school. Do send snacks with them though: double mini ritz crackers with cheese slim jims (favorites) gojurt (joghurt) pudding jello with fruits applesauce mozarella cheese sticks (another favorite)” 3:38:07 PM 3/26/04 “When we were growing up you ate what was put in front of you or you went hungry. I think a lot of it is kids testing mom. I do think vicsaw had a good idea though.” 4:03:31 PM 3/26/04 “thanks everyone for the ideas. i've already tried the list thing. doesn't work making their own is a good idea. probably i shouldn't worry as long as something gets eaten. never heard of primary schools providing lunches. what a great idea!” 5:58:40 PM 3/26/04 “never heard of primary schools providing lunches. what a great idea!" helinka 05:58:40 PM 03/26/04 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------” 6:33:11 PM 3/26/04 “woops anyways helinka what kinda school does your kid go to and what state are you in...wherever it is i would move..thats crzy.....” 6:33:58 PM 3/26/04 “school lunches, school lunches, school lunches. When at the less than 150 student, K-6 elementary school, there was a Chef that balanced out the government rations that schools use to make the lunches affordable. My kids still eat at school but not so yummy. Sonsplotch doesn't really recognize what passes by his taste buds anyway, and he can use the fat and calories. Not sure what sonsplotches twin sister eats, just sugary drinks from a machine, I think” 9:39:16 PM 3/26/04 “shep!?! Ontario is not a state. even though you want us.” 1:21:29 AM 3/27/04 “we jsut take a cup of crisco and a cup of sugar and a quarter cup of red dye #7, mix it up and slather it onto an eskimo pie.....they love it!” 1:51:48 AM 3/27/04 “i have solved my problem and it was so simple. i now charge for any un-eaten food i find in their lunchbags. by the time they figure out to toss the evidence in the garbage, school will be done! hahaha and they get to make their own lunches. that helps too.” 11:18:48 PM 4/02/04 “I hate to burst your bubble, but they are going to catch on to this. Start a campaign for government subsidized school lunches and Hakuna Matada(no worries) will ensue” 8:05:03 PM 4/05/04 “Cool Helinka, Try to convince them that they are being videotaped or being watched while they are eating and that you will catch them throwing anything out. hehehehe For example, my 9-year-old isn't completely convinced yet that I don't have eyes in the back of my head. He also thinks that I know and speak to all the lunchroom matrons even though in reality I don't even know their names.” 8:38:57 PM 4/05/04 This wiull give away my age “When I was in HS the scholl lunch was 25 cents (hot meal and milk and dessert). My buddy bought two and always gave me the milk he hated. I brought PBJ everyday with mom's homemade cookies (choc chip, oatmeal, mince filled etc) To this day I still love PBJs. Isn't the PBJ one of the basic food groups? Try going to an army surplus store and buy the kids some MREs to take in hehehehehe after a week of that they will love anything you make.” 10:03:44 AM 4/06/04 “Mommies, please don't take your cute little snot nosed kids to a Buffet Lunch and let them get their own food with their little snotty hands. It's not cute. [/end #&%!$ing font]” 12:43:17 PM 2/08/06 “Aaaaaah, Stovie, a few buggers never hurt anyone. ;o)” 12:47:05 PM 2/08/06 “I feel like a kid, does that count? I'm having pureed great northern bean soup w/a few whole beans in it for texture. I made it already for later. It came out excellent and it's only 500 calories.” 12:47:31 PM 2/08/06 “Laurel's having whatever she wants today (Wendys kids meal with chicken nuggets) after getting 4 shots today at the doctors office. It took 3 of us to hold her down, and one nurse to administer the shots. One had to be repeated in her other arm too, because she moved. They were amazed at how strong she was. Zowie. She weighs 39.5 pounds (still skinny) and is 45.5 " tall. Her hearing is excellent, the eye test was good, but probably could have had better results because of her messing around during the test. The nurse administering these tests wasn't good at giving clear instructions at all. She's all set to start school next week.” 9:42:24 AM 8/21/07
