NM
good time for trout fishing coming up. I only fish if my kids want to fish. I'd rather hike.

Chama River has some action already.

Hilarious post on the fishing board I read
Hey there yall,

I've been fishin criker this weekend and than
the storm came a brewin in. Well, after hookin
a few scaley cats I finally starting hookin them brim.
As soon as my criker hit the water them brim would hit hard. So, if yall want to know my secret for fishin
for brim, than here goes. First I recomend when you cast make sure it goes neer the shore. Them brim like shaloow water. Next hook the criker in the body because if you hook the head it might fall off. You can use them worms to, but them cost more.
And finally when your bobber goes under water that means the brim is biting so set the hook by pulling your rod hard.

Hope this helps yall,

I saw on the local news last night that fishing license sales are down this year because they increased the price from $17 to $22. The trout stamp went from $5 to $9. Everytime they raise the price they always sell less and they know that will happen. What they lose is the fisherman that might only get out and fish a few times per year. The bait and tackle shops are complaining because they lose sales of all the other gear that is now not purchased because less people are participating in the sport.

Raining now, warm temps over the next several days, and more rain this weekend. Nice! Pretty soon there'll be open water on the lakes, and I can begin bass fishing. I'll be getting my fly rod in a few weeks also. Lot's to look forward to.

I'm getting excited about going out and fishing too. Last weekend, I saw some small stoneflies that hatched near a local creek. With the warm temps this week, I'm sure some Quill Gorden mayflies will start to hatch. I'm not sure how the flooding from Ivan last year will effect this years hatches if at all. With all the rain we just had and more on the way the creeks will be too high and muddy to fish this week.

The skunk is out of the bag
I had to take advantage of the nice weather last night and go fishing. I caught my first trout of the season last night. A 12.5” scraggly looking stocked brown. It's back in the creek to get bigger.

Nice, I'm hoping to catch my first trout of the season this weekend. I think the water should recede enough by then from the recent floods. I need to buy a fishing license this week.

I am jealous.... There aren't any trout in Africa. Too bad I am missing it this year.

I do have something though, Mahi mahi barely off the shore and some other varities!

Saw a whale shark a couple of weeks ago, it was awesome!

Sunday I caught a nice little black crappie and a smallmouth bass. I also caught a few bream too small to keep and a big ol' shad that went back into the water.

One of the rainbow trout released with a radio transmitter was located in the Susquehanna River this week between Danville and Catawissa, PA. It was released a few weeks ago in Wysox creek 123 miles away! Next Sunday they will have more information on the movement of the other trout carrying the transmitters.

Very cool. I haven't had much luck on my recent fishing outings, I keep catching little bream, too small to keep. Well, I did catch a smallmouth bass and a black crappie weekend before last. They're in the freezer now.

Rainbows are runners. When I ran a few trout clubs for a private company in the Pocono area for years, we always went light on ordering rainbows from the hatchery. Although we offered them in the streams we stocked, the catch rate was 85% below that of the brookies and browns.

Nice to see one tracked so well.

They stock the Sipsey down here, below the Smith Lake dam, IIRC. I don't have a trout rig but I guess I could catch them on a small crappie jig.

I went out Saturday and flyfished for almost 2 hours. The water was in the mid 40's, no bugs were coming off, no trout were moving and I didn't even get a strike. To top it off I wasn't feeling that well so I just bailed and went home. I'll try again this weekend.

The guy estimated it at 80lbs. He couldn't get a weigh because he let it go. But given its size relative to the guy, 80lbs seems reasonable.

I watched PA Outdoor Life tonight and they gave an update on the trout carrying the transmitters. All of them have moved downstream on Wysox Creek and most have moved into the Susquehanna River far from where they were stocked. The biologists did not expect this and because of it they likely will make changes to the timing of the stocking next year. They aren't sure why the fish moved so far because they said the condition of the creeks were suitable. Even more bizarre is that all the stocked fish numbering in the thousands on two creeks have moved down stream and nobody fishing on opening day has seen the stocked fish according to the program on TV tonight. I'm wondering if the flooding had something to do with so many fish moving downstream, but they didn't really go into detail about the reasons. They did say fish are more likely to move during low water, but we knew that already.

Did you know that in North Carolina, July 4th is declared "Free Fishing Day" and a fishing license is not required on this date in inland public waters.

I did not know that.

WOW, I have never seen a Brookie that big. The state record in Wisconsin streams was 9 lbs 15 oz and was caught in 1944, no length was given. In Lake Michigan the record is 10 lbs 1 oz and was 24 inches long. I hope someday to catch a brookie that big. The biggest I ever caught was 14 inches in Colorado.

How is everyone making out with the fishing so far this season? Locally, it's probably one of the weakest fly fishing seasons yet due to the 4th driest May on record and the present heat wave. I went out a few times after some light rains, but it's pretty tough out there with the fish spooked and limited hatches taking place. The hatches were pathetic this year, maybe from the floods last fall or just not enough water volume this spring. I heard some cooler weather may be on the way and maybe some rain from a tropical storm to save what so far has been a disappointing season.

same here rich.

the hendricksons in mid spring were pretty great as usual, but now the water's low, clear and the hatches are weak and after sunset.

we better get some rain quick before my favorite hatch (green drakes)

I have been surf fishing a couple times and boat fishing once in the past month and haven't hit on much. Some baby sharks is about it for me and a couple croakers. Buddy of mine caught a 4 1/2 pound rainbow trout, and on a night I wasn't with him another buddy caught a bunch of blues.

Maybe I am just bad luck

Well, last week at Nags Head, the only thing I managed to catch was a skate. But the party I was with caught 8 blues, and cleaned them, filleted them, and I fried them up and they were great.

I went fishing some on Wednesday after work, and I caught two little bream. I had another pole rigged to bottom-fish for cat, and I got a few nibbles, but never a good bite.
