From what I read on Central PA. stream reports, the Green Drake hatch on Penn's creek is over. At least it wasn't mentioned from what I saw so I'm assuming it's over. I did notice that the limestone streams out there (Penn's and Elk Creek) are low as well.

There's a smaller catch and release stream around here that has small green drake hatch each year, but it's so low now it's hopeless fishing it. I tried it and the fish scatter when you a approach each pool. They can see and detect movement from long distances with the water this low. I knew it would be bad, but gave it try anyway.

the fishing this year reminds me of the dry year we had about 5 years ago.

better than average fishing in april (we open april 1) and first half of may, but then pretty rotten through most of the summer.

Hey yall, whats the length of your poles?

I am looking at em online (i used to do a lot of fly fishing back in CA) andI am wondering what sized pole most people get.

9' foot is probably the most common.

depends on what you wanna do though.

Oh great, now everyone's gonna be bragging about how long their poles are...

nothing to brag about when it's only about 1/2" diameter

Quite the opposite here in the west. Most streams in S. Utah are so swollen with record snowmelt that streams are dark brown and over thier banks. Not the greatest for flyfishing but I hear the kayaking is awesome.

...yeah but ultimately there's a lot to be said for the flexability...a flexible rod allows you to get into really tight places....

SC..
Length and wt of a pole really depends on the type of fish you want to catch.

For trout or panfish. A 3wt thru a 5 wt are your best bet, length is generally an 8'6" thru a 9' 2"

Bass, Northern or Walleye's is a 6wt thru a 9wt, generally anything close to 9' is good.

Check out Orvis or G Loomis web sites. Lots of good info to read thru.

The length of fly rod I use is based on the type of stream I'm trout fishing in. For small grown in streams I use a 6.5 foot rod. For streams that aren't as grown in and a little larger and 8 foot and larger water a 9 foot rod.

count for this weekend...
7 nice rainbows...4 on the mini caster that I have, and 3 on the fly rod at camp on Sat evening, 1 small mouth bass on the caster. I used the casting rod as I floated...now that was FUN!!! new meaning to "lolligagging".

Sounds like a good day of fishing. I had a pretty good day Saturday and managed to catch and release a bunch of brook trout on dry flies in a backcountry stream. The action tailed off about 11 AM as it got hot out, but in the morning they were rising well enough in some of the deeper pools. The water was low everywhere else though. Warm too, with the water temp at 68, I was surprised I caught anything on top.

I really want to do more fly fishing...
but that takes time. and so does canoeing, so, I've got a bit of a conflict. take less gear, set up and tear down will be less time consuming so that I can fly fish more, or leave it like it is and have less time to fly fish, but have a wickedly cool camp site and do minimal fly fishing and more casting from the canoe while floating...

such ponderous problems should plague us all.

over the last couple years i've done a complete turn around. i used be 80% canoe fishing for bass, 20% flyfishing for trout.

now i'm nearly all flyfishing.

i don't catch as many fish, but the scenery is so much nicer. the saying is absolutely true "trout live in beautiful places"

agreed sacco...
but, since I'm new at fishing and the river is abundant with trout, I can catch em while I float. Lots of people use corn, I caught mine on an orange "rooster tail". The largest trout of the day was a 15"er. It was a great haul. That one I caught on the fly rod whilst at sunset time after setting up camp. I was slow cooking some ribs at the time over the camp fire and I waded out to the center of the chute I was camping at the began the process and landed it within 15 minutes. I got it on a nymph with a gold bead head.

that's cool that you've got a river to float with good trout fishin.

the trout river near me can be floated too, but it's not as productive that way. sometimes i do it with my little old town otter kayak.

the other river is great fishing for bass, panfish, walleye, and tigermuskie and it's perfect for floatfishing but the scenery along it is just not as nice.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fishermen in northern Thailand have caught the biggest catfish on record -- a 646-pound (293-kg) giant the size of a grizzly bear -- and eaten it, the WWF and the National Geographic Society said on Wednesday.

The giant catfish, believed to be the largest freshwater fish ever found, was caught along the Mekong River, home to more species of massive fish than any river on Earth.

"We've now confirmed that this catfish is the current record holder, an astonishing find," Dr Zeb Hogan, a WWF Conservation Science Fellow, said in the joint statement.

Who Needs a License?
Everyone must have a valid fishing license in their possession while fishing, except:

Persons under 16 years of age.

works for me. heck we will be on an island. we will see them before they see us

Caught 8 yesterday, kept 3. Biggest was a nice fat shellcracker. The bite seems to be picking up a little, and from what I've heard, it's even better if you can get in a boat and out over deep water.

Double-Mouthed Fish Pulled From Neb. Lake
By Associated Press

LINCOLN, Neb. - This fish didn't have a chance. A rainbow trout pulled out of Holmes Lake last weekend had double the chance to get hooked: It had two mouths.

Clarence Olberding, 57, wasn't just telling a fisherman's fib when he called over another angler to look at the two-mouthed trout. It weighed in at about a pound.

"I reached down and grabbed it to take the hook out, and that's when I noticed that the hook was in the upper mouth and there was another jaw protruding out below," said Olberding.

He said in his 40 years of fishing, he's never seen anything like it.

Don Gabelhouse, head of the fisheries division of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, said a two-mouthed fish was new to him, too.

"It's probably a genetic deformity," he said. "I don't think there's anything wrong with it."

The second mouth didn't appear to be functional, Olberding said. He has plans for the fish, which don't included mounting.

"I'm going to smoke it up and eat it," he said.
