XM Radio

“OK, who has it?

I just got done looking at the XM Radio website and am seriously considering the plunge.

The site is rather vague as to everything a person needs to have this product. It'd be nice if they listed every item you need for a complete XM ready system.

I assume, along with an XM-ready unit, that you'll need a receiver and antenna??? The $9.99/month sounds good, but seems like you also must have to dump alot of cash into other items.

Can anyone who has XM radio chime in and give their 2 cents and the jist of the system requirements?”

The USA's two competing satellite radio companies say they need big cash infusions to continue operating beyond next year.

Both XM Satellite Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio offer 100 channels of music, news sports, talk and entertainment broadcast channels, available nationwide, for a monthly fee. All the Sirius channels and many of XM's are commercial free.

But so far, neither has attracted enough subscribers to break even.

“I love it...the comedy channels and 3 techno channels make it all worth it to me...lots of variety...you don't hear the same ol 10 songs over and over with annoying car commercials and stupid dj's...you have 80 or so music channels...cnn to get you off the music kick...fox news too if ya want...weather and road forcast for about 15 of the major cities...also uncensored...even a channel with morning shows all day if your into that kinda mental abuse”

“Love XM radio. Have the delphi sky-hi which has preset buttons AND a wireless remote which makes us channel flippers happy. You could literally pick "1" channel & never move because it becomes your favorite & you can receive it everywhere. I forget what the radio cost, maybe $99.... For the accessories, you can buy a FM modulator for the "built-in" look. These just attach to your car's antennae system to feed the signal to your cars radio. I've heard pros & cons on these, but I don't have one. (like$49) the regular accessory pack for $69 comes with EVERYTHING you need. The aprx 2x2x1" antennae is strongly suggested to go on the high part of your roof by XM (magnetic base) The (co-worker) girl that convinced me has a soft top & throws the antennae on her dash. So do I. Works great there in 95% of locations. The radio plugs into your cigarette lighter for power & a cassette adapter for sound hence you NEED the FM modulator if you don't have a cassette player. Five minutes later you leave the radio on, go to the website sign-up & within the hour, you're permantly on the air. You can sign up for electronic monthly billing or longer. You can pop the radio out & place in a boom box ($99) for inside your home. It has a hundred stations. They're separated into catagories (if you like) IT TELLS you (display)what song & group you are listening to. I LOVE XM RADIO & am not affiliated with them. The others may be good too, but XM had a cheaper monthly fee & I'm cheap. They have traffic for major area's, weather, 50.60.70etc era music, comedy, news, jazz, religious, folk......the list is ENDLESS. They have depression era radio. My investment was about $160 & $10 a month. NO CONTRACT, quit anytime. You do have to pay $10 for each radio, but you can move the base anywhere. It's the cat's ass.”

“i got it when it first came out...so it ran around 300 bucks with fm modulator, small pioneer xm tuner (most car stereos are XM/sirius ready now), and the lil mouse antennae...i'd def get the delphi removable deal...so you can take it inside and slip it into that boombox....i so wish that was out when i got mine...but no worries i'm happy...no car i have will be without xm ever again...miss opies next car will have xm even if i have to buy it....one reason i hate taking hers anywhere right now is cause of the lack of XM...lol”

“I have XM also and like it a lot. I never listen to any local stations anymore. It is really great when traveling from home to another state.

My son got me the XM-roadie. It comes with all the adapters so you can plug it right into my cassette player. It also came with the home kit so I can take it inside and listen on the home system.

I think the XM roadie sell for about 120.00 plus you 3 month fee of 30.00.

Channel 82 the System is the electronic stattion to listen to.”

“I have XM and enjoy it. Especially when going out of town. I have had it for 2 years. Many channels have no commercials. I like the blues channel and the old rock and roll channels also 166 the talk show channel. I still listen to Stern on regular radio and CD`s as well. XM has a good clear sound”

“I lust after XM. What about my office? Does it require and outdoor antenna/receiver?”

“The antennae is VERY small & they sell longer wires. If the antennae didn't work inside it would be barely noticeable just outside your window. I think the problem might lie in which direction your window is facing & if there are obstacles (other buildings) blocking the signal. If you see any sat tv dishes, my 'guess' is that it would work.”

“The XM Radio website has streaming audio of their stations, and I LIKE what I've heard so far.

Next time I'm at the Sony store, I'm going to get info on their antennas/receivers, etc. and $$$ of a plan. The new stereo in my van sounds sooooooo good, so why not make it even better?”

“I have XM, it is the best $10 I spend a month. Don't know what I ever did with out it. I have the SkiFi with the FM modulator in my truck and I also have the home kit as well. I'm considering getting the boom box to take camping and stuff too. I don't think I will ever listen to AM/FM again.”

“Okay, here are some updates on my new MyFi XM Radio:

Commercials: It does have commercials, although not as many and not as long. For instance, UPS (which won't deliver my packages when I'm not home) advertizes on ACC hoops games.

The rechargable battery runs down awfully fast, so this thing will not serve as a backpacking radio. It will work for car camping, provided you can recharge it in the car.

But it's a pretty nice radio, and the programming is good.”

“Yes, it has a cassette adapter for the car and a jack to plug it into a stereo at home. It will also broadcast a low power signal to any FM radio. Or you can use a stereo headset.”

“I get billed on my credit card every 3 months. I guess you could contact them and do that. Just watch your credit card though”

“I must say I have come to really love XM radio. I do find that with 30 presets I spend a lot of time surfing with the remote. Must be a guy thing I think. One problem I do have is that the unit I bought has low audio output. I have it cranked all the way up and the head unit cranked all the way and it's still not very loud. I think it's time to get a big amp, dig the box set out of the basement and put some bump in da trunk.”

“I'm pretty hooked on Sirius. They recently introduced a 90's grunge station and a Grateful Dead channel.”

“My Honda came with XM for three months so i thought I'd listen to it for the trial and switch back to FM. It ran out and I listened to FM and found that they did nothing but talk and play commercials and no music. So I signed back up for XM. The bad thing about XM is the variety though...since they play nothing but music and no talking they play the same songs over and over and over.”

“I have found that as well Dub but the great thing is most times the songs are the ones that never got played on radio. Deep cuts. The ones I listen to most are Bone Yard, Squizz, Lucy, the talk station and Laugh 51.”

“I love my Sirius. They make a small boom box for the radio to fit in. I keep it at work. I drilled a hole through my office floor and ran the extra receiver out on the back porch.”

“I wonder how much workplace vandalism has taken place in the name of satellite radio. A few people at my work have gotten crafty.

At one time I heard talk of terrestrial repeater networks for major cities. Anyone know anything about that?
