I would sugggest you give your current boss more notice just in case you need him for a reference, or if someone does a background check on you for future employment.” 5:55:19 AM 3/29/04 “concur, but he might give you a reference later on anyway - just don't leave him in a bind if you can help it at all.” 6:04:23 AM 3/29/04 “nah you obviously dont work in the automotive business...for body shop techs/ paint techs giving notice means one thing...you tell them im leaving in two weeks...they tell you, WANT ME TO CALL THE TOW truck for your toolbox??? they dont give a flying you know what who is working there as long as they are meeting their forecast...but oh well let them find someone to replaceme before my helper takes a vacation for a week...im not giving notice...i just no longer care” 6:07:10 AM 3/29/04 “good luck, shep!” 7:29:22 AM 3/29/04 “Woooo Hooo...go Shep........good luck......” 7:31:04 AM 3/29/04 “hey shep, I know the feeling. I gave notice once and the guy looked at me and said. "ok, clean out your stuff and get out of my office". WOW! I was tryin to be nice.” 7:31:24 AM 3/29/04 “I can't wait until December and I can give my notice. It'll be the best day ever! Good luck in your new job Shep.” 7:41:44 AM 3/29/04 “Good luck in your new job. Everyone should have a job. If for no other reason than quitting them is so damn much fun.” 7:47:48 AM 3/29/04 “Damn the Man!!!! ;-)” 8:57:54 AM 3/29/04 Good For You Shep...............And Me Too “It looks more and more like I'll be quitting my job in the next few weeks, as a better opportunity has finally come my way. My current employer has been very good to me so I do plan on giving a notice of leaving. Unfortunately, although I have not talked with this Co yet about time off (I'm getting a 2nd interview and from the way the dood talked to me I get the feeling I'm already in), I may not be able to take 1.25 weeks off for the CA King's Canyon trip. We'll see.” 2:52:29 PM 3/29/04 “Probably best to give notice, then if they treat you badly it's bad karma for them, not you. The last time I changed jobs (almost 8 years ago), I was very unhappy, but gave a reasonable notice. When the company president tried to unreasonably delay paying me for a miniscule amount of company stock they had given me as a "bonus" one year, I left immediately and threatened to come to their stockholder meetings every year! They couldn't wait to pay me for the stock at that point! Too bad, that coulda been kinda fun....” 2:57:07 PM 3/29/04 “shep best of luck. Buddur congrats on the second interview--usually a good sign.” 2:58:09 PM 3/29/04 “never ever burn your bridges... good luck and may the swartz be with you” 3:02:24 PM 3/29/04 “well just to go against your saying maple i burnt that bridge and he asked me to stay...ha, i doubt that...too much ass kissing going on in the old shop...worked about 6 and a half hours today and it was great...and for more money to boot...and to whoever started the post about MORE TIME OR MORE MONEY??? i choose both...CUZ I CAN...i am just good enough at my job that i can do that i suppose...it went great and i am happy for the supportive comments above...after i told him i wasnt staying he said good luck and he can understand why i would leave for more money and less time there...” 6:55:02 PM 3/29/04 “yeah, if you can get more time AND more money, well that is what it's all about!” 7:06:14 PM 3/29/04 “The only two times my employers have ever listened to me is when I was being interviewed as part of the hiring process, and whn I quit and they had to find out what projects I was working on and how far along they were. Other than that, I was just another 'resource' to be exploited. (THATs why they call if Human RESOURCES!)” 10:30:18 PM 3/29/04 “looks more and more like this'll be my last week with my current employer...if I want to have next week off. Moooo Haaahaaaahaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!” 6:16:28 PM 3/30/04 “quitting today.... at least giving my notice. i'm almost 100% sure i'm going through with it.” 10:43:16 AM 10/29/04 “woo hoo!! I did that last month - and then again last week!” 10:44:33 AM 10/29/04 “I figured this was Mapes....” 10:45:08 AM 10/29/04 “hate it here : ( sad thing is, i'm one of the best workers here... or so they say.” 10:45:45 AM 10/29/04 “nah, mapes will be getting fired LOL” 10:46:20 AM 10/29/04 “I hate having to quit. I have only had to do it a few times so far. The last one was tough because I was leaving the profession I went to school for. I worked hard to get into the place I ended up working for 5 years. I finally came to the conclussion that the time I was spending at work and the lack of money I was making would eventually cause Barbie and I to split up. I was never home and we had just gotten married. I look back at that decision and I think I made the right choice. Now I have time to backpack and hang out with all you crazy people.” 11:07:30 AM 10/29/04 “You can use this as your letter of resignation. Dear Boss, I quit because you suck. ScorchFire PS Bite me.” 11:21:50 AM 10/29/04 “I don't blame you Scorch. I quit years ago, and I have been much happier.” 11:52:32 AM 10/29/04 “NO, here's a better letter. Dear Boss, Now that I see things more clearly.... You ARE the weakest link! Buh-Bye! "I will survive...." Scorchfire” 12:30:02 PM 10/29/04 “Of course, in reality, you won't want to burn any bridges becasue you never know what will come back to haunt you... :-P I did play "I will survive" on my CD player the morning I drove into work and quit my last job. A few weeks before I quit, I painted a picture of a cheese (after reading "who moved my cheese".... He thought it was really funny to "move it" every few days....(BEFORE i put in my notice.) After I went in and gave him my notice, I would "move my cheese" closer towards the door every day during the last 2 weeks in my office.... :-)” 12:33:29 PM 10/29/04 “i'm hoping it will end peacefully. going in to meet now. wish me luck!” 1:13:47 PM 10/29/04 “Good luck scorchy...” 1:14:49 PM 10/29/04 “What pink posted, don't burn your bridges. goodluck” 1:15:56 PM 10/29/04 “what a crock! she won't let me quit. told me to go to EAP and talk it out. What BS. she told me to think about it. i'll tell her what i'm thinking... anyway. i'm gonna be looking for a new job. if all else fails i can be a claims adjuster at a local office that's been trying to get me to work there. i only need something temp til i move to VA anyhow.” 1:42:29 PM 10/29/04 “What's EAP? Employee Assistance Program? Find another job and then give her notice. You gotta be more forceful about quitting, Scorchy...” 1:47:07 PM 10/29/04 “In two weeks just pack up and leave.” 1:48:00 PM 10/29/04 “well i had told her i was thinking about giving my 2 weeks notice. i've been thinking about it for a while and i figured i'd bring it up to her today and see what she says. either way i planned on looking for a new job. i just wanted to give her a heads up because it's hard to fill the position of a #&%!$ty caseworker. it's hard work and like NO pay.” 1:48:39 PM 10/29/04 “You know... if your heart isn't in your work, then it's time to move on. If she isn't offering you an upgrade in pay to stay, then I'd do like you said and get yourself another job in hand and say "adios" to her! Make sure you don't lose any of your vacation time/personal time-- I'd use it to start interviewing-- but keep mum about it to your co-workers.... Just be VERY careful--someone I knew had MENTIONED giving notice and then next day, her boss started interviewing new people! (so, in essence, that left her no choice BUT to quit-- but it was okay--he was a jerk anyways.)” 1:56:58 PM 10/29/04 “Don't tell your boss you're thinking of quitting. How stupid is that. Either quit or don't.” 1:57:47 PM 10/29/04 “File our letter and pack your bags. A quick break, like ripping off a bandaid, is always best. Good Luck” 2:07:59 PM 10/29/04 “dayhiker, how do you really feel about it?” 2:08:10 PM 10/29/04 My Job Just Quit Me! “I'm starting a new job this weekend. I got my notice Tuesday. I am leaving a comfortable inside laboratory job of 12 years and going to a sweaty outside job. My bosses, bosses, boss said I was picked because of my experiance and good work habits. No extra pay, no promotion just we need you to go there. I'm now a true blue collar worker. I guess I should be glad to still have a job in the Bush economy.” 2:15:38 PM 10/29/04 “I like LZ's suggestion - you gave notice - you can't make her accept it.” 2:16:31 PM 10/29/04 “I gotta agree with dayhiker. Telling your boss you're thinking about quitting is never a good thing. Even if you stay, now they know you're not loyal.” 2:16:51 PM 10/29/04 “Well, duh. You tell someone you're thinking of quitting. The boss has two choices, try to keep you or try to replace you. They'll probably try and do both simultaneously just in case. All that does is make for a jumpy boss. If you decide to stay they know leaving is on your mind. If you decide to leave, then do it. As Yoda says, either do or do not, there is no try.” 2:17:05 PM 10/29/04 “The duh comment wasn't directed as Smiley.” 2:19:31 PM 10/29/04 “wouldn't your boss know you were thinking of quitting anyway, at least if he/she got a call from another prospective employer asking for a recommendation? my boss always said to tell her when we were putting out applications, so she'd know to be prepared. i told her a couple times i was looking around, and it was no prob. in fact, she worked it so i got a big raise this year, and no one else got a raise. so there! beeyatches.” 2:30:17 PM 10/29/04 “my current boss in FL was one of my references for my new job in CO - but I've had other bosses that I never would have dreamed of asking to do that. At my last job, I went to my boss to ask for some extra time off (I didn't have any vacay time left) so that I could come down here and interview with some peeps. Depends on the individual. Those two bosses were just good hearted, real careing people.” 2:43:19 PM 10/29/04 “my last boss was horrible... he drove morale to the ground in my job. I didn't tell anyone (including my closest friends at my job) about leaving until the day I came in and gave notice. (nothing like a new suit to perk you up!) I didn't use anyone at my old job for a reference since I was changing fields anyways... However, I had enough good references that I didn't need him. (didn't want his reference was more like it-- he had it out for me from the earliest days in that job.) I was actually quite nice, gave them 3 extra days before leaving... but I made sure to take all of my vacation time before I left! My friends were so shocked-- when I stepped into their offices to let them know the scoop, they thought I was going to tell them that I was preggers... LOL!! However I got around to most of the office (well, my good friends, anyhow) BEFORE the boss came in... I waited until he came back from Christmas Break. Merry new year! last edited: 10/29/04 2:50:52 PM” 2:48:57 PM 10/29/04 “yeah, i would think that most people are good enough judges of character to know whether or not they should say something. i've never had any other "real" boss except the one i have now, but the way other people talk, i'm sort of afraid to think about what it would be like to have someone else for a boss!” 2:51:20 PM 10/29/04 “I've had good bosses, bad bosses, mediocre bosses, smart bosses, stupid bosses, you name it. The bad ones are usually very, very bad, while most of the others simply fall in the competent category. The biggest complaint I have about my current boss is that she tends to talk over me when I'm explaining something, but I chalk that up to her being a programmer too.” 2:59:02 PM 10/29/04 ““Don't tell your boss you're thinking of quitting. How stupid is that. Either quit or don't.” dayhiker it's not stupid at all, if you knew how my job operated. they get angry if you don't tell them. they're rather have the notice so they can be prepared. either way i'm looking for a new job, so what's it matter? if all else fails i can do the claims adjustment job until i move.” 3:00:33 PM 10/29/04
