One of the fundraisers for a local civic club I'm in uses a raffle for 2 Talladega Race tickets as part of our fundraiser. The group is Kiwanis Club which mainly supports childrens issues.

I have 38 remaining $1 chances for 2 tickets to the April 25 race at Talladega Superspeedway, Talladega, AL. This is about 1 hr east of Birmingham and 1.5 hrs west of Atlanta. Anyone want any chances?

I should add that there are about 45 members of this club and each get 50 tickets. That makes the chance of winning on a single ticket about 1/2250.

How long before they pull my winning ticket?

Hmm, that doesn't leave too much time to plan for the race, but, hell, I am a logistical genius, I can make it.

At the Board of Directors meeting where the dates were set up, the Pres of the club kept trying to put the ticket sale dates in March because he though the race was in March. After 15 minutes of trying to get him to realize it was April a guy asked, "Do we have a senility clause in our bylaws?" We did good getting the him to realize what month the race was and gave up trying to give people more notice from the drawing.

In that meeting we had 3 people in their 30's and 5 in their 70's. I couldn't get out of that one quick enough. The immortal words of Lewis Grizzard came to mind, "Damn, brother, don't believe I'd a told that."

I'm going to see if my bosses wife has any more of her tickets left. If anyone wants some I'm sure I can round them up.

Thanks so much to chili and stikmon. 100% of this money goes to childrens programs to include literacy, international iodine definciency (worlds leading cause of preventable mental retardation), yearly coats program for needy chidlren, and about 30 other local org's. Thanks so much.

Also, if anyone who gets these chances winds up winning then we'll have to get together for a meal. I live about 15 minutes from the track. Actually, I live 15 minutes away during normal traffic. Race weekend I live about 2 hrs away. I have an out of town conference that weekend, but should be back Sunday evening.

A place to stay will be the hard part. Hotel sale out from Tuscaloosa to Atlanta. Camping on the grounds is what most people do. I'll check out how quick that sales out. Other possibilities include Oak Mtn SP outside B'ham, Cheaha SP outside Anniston, and the Pinhoti which is adjacent to Cheaha. I'd recommend that since it's free.

The best place to stay is in the family campground behind Turn One.

Plan on getting there on Thursday afternoon and don't even think about leaving until Monday sometime.

Pack plenty of beer and a cooler that you can take into the grandstand. 'Coleman Playmate' will hold about 18 beers, four sandwiches and snacks if you pack it right.

Don't plan on sitting down. Take sunscreen, sunglasses, a cap and your best [ Insert Driver's Name Here] shirt.

If you can get to the infield for time trials, the best place to watch is between the trioval and turn one.

It's funny watching all the vehicles on the interstate starting on about Tuesday. Big doolie pickups with coolers that looks like the tubs in conveince stores and gas grills in the back. Leaving on Sunday would be very tough. I never schedule meetings that involve using the interstate on either Friday or Monday.
