My son raised an interesting questionView Messages“Hey shep, I don't think bit was saying older people work harder. I think he was just pointing out a difference in attitudes/approaches to life between the two groups and wondering out loud why that might be. I know my outlook on things has changed as I got older - when I was 22 I was out to conquer the world, become a partner, buy a big ole house, and all that stuff. Now I've just come to realize, both through trying to get there and losing a few things along the way, and through observing some other people who have gotten there and lost more that the price that has to be paid isn't worth it for me. I'd rather hang out with my kids in the evenings and weekends, see my friends when I want and do stuff for myself than spend 90% of my life working and scrambling and getting fat behind a desk. I have a smaller office now than I might otherwise - but the office isn't the main focus of my life anymore - and I'm better off for it - so are those around me. He wasn't slammin younger folks, just observing a differnce in thought processes, I think.” 8:00:39 PM 3/29/04 “well my thought process leans towards making money..you know why??? cuz at the first of the month if i dont ahve that check my belongings are on the sidewalk and im homeless for the time being...me being 22 i think of almost nothing but money...i want it..you know why? cuz when i get enough then i can have the TIME that i want...i dont want time now i want it later... therefore assuming that it's possible someone is just standing on the corner, handing out $100 bills. ................................. that is what was said...i dont expect anyone to hand me anything...i get a raise and i know i deserve it...if i dont i look for the money elsewhere...” 9:09:32 PM 3/29/04 “same deal here man - that's why I moved waythehelldown here to South Florida. Got me a good job that I can probably have as long as I want it - the bosses are fair, the pay is fair and I still get to have time for the kids, time for myself and enough vacation flexibility to head up North for some Great Smokey escapes now and then - at least a couple times a year, maybe more.” 9:55:21 PM 3/29/04 “More Money” 5:49:15 AM 3/30/04 Roam “When did you move to Florida?” 5:59:53 AM 3/30/04 “Roam is right...I was just pointing differences in thought processes. Shep, if you'd drop that gigantic chip you have on your shoulder, maybe you'd see that.” 8:09:45 AM 3/30/04 “True, Shep. This wasn't meant to inflame. I got some great answers. My son was busy with homework last night and he didn't get to read the thread yet. I intend to show it to him later. He is excited that he got a lot of repsonse. It was a question not designed to throw anyone into a tizzy, but to get a good cross-section of opinions from a wide variety of folks. And that much, he got! Thanks, people. And keep 'em coming, if you will...” 8:15:51 AM 3/30/04 “So, when you're young you want more money because time seems limitless and as you get older you want more time because you know you are running out of it?” 8:40:40 AM 3/30/04 “Wingding, you may have hit on a very strong point there...” 8:42:54 AM 3/30/04 “gee thanks wingie, now im depressed :(” 8:43:40 AM 3/30/04 “Does that mean I'm old for my age?” 8:45:02 AM 3/30/04 “I don't know, Zac, but we ain't getting any younger...” 8:47:24 AM 3/30/04 all we are is dust in the wind... “it slips away.....and all your money won't another minute buy...” 8:51:13 AM 3/30/04 “Hey don't get too down! Look at it this way: Probably in the next 10-20 years, medical science will conquer the two biggest killers there are, heart disease and cancer. When they do, we can all look forward to lifespans significantly longer than we have already, probably on the order of 10-15 years. So, while at this point in time, it appears that I've less than half my life left to go, in actuality, if I can avoid having a heart attack (good chance, given the state of my cardio health at this time) and cancer (good genes here too, nobody in my family has ever had cancer) I probably won't really hit the midway point for, oh, 5-7 years. So buck up!” 8:52:13 AM 3/30/04 “I think the best thing to do is to find a good balance between the two.” 8:53:20 AM 3/30/04 “I had the privilege of being home with my kids as they grew up.....we had a blast......not much money...but we found all kinds of fun things to do..... now as a single adult...I wish I would have taken some of that time to get an education so I could get a decent job.... but....my answer is somewhere in the middle of time & money...... I think happiness is the key....” 9:28:04 AM 3/30/04 “same here divinity, stayed at home and raised the little ones, now as an adult i understand how importain it is to get an education first then have kids. i did it @ss backwards and now im in school and wont grad till im 40.” 9:35:07 AM 3/30/04 “Go Girl.....graduating at 40 isn't too bad.....If I could do anything, I would be an elementary teacher, or like my daughter, be a childrens librarian....but they are 4 yr degrees........and I am running out of time.....” 9:55:19 AM 3/30/04 “so divinity your saying youd like more time? LOL Walkindude: moved down to FL at the first of February, I was gonna starve and get evicted if I'd stuck it out in SC much longer. Only drag now is that I'm too damn far from the mountains, good thing I don't mind road trips.” 10:08:45 AM 3/30/04 “Definally more time to do things I like... I am amazed at how well I do with money and little of it,,, you can always save and there are tons of free things to do you just have to find them!!” 10:14:59 AM 3/30/04 “but i want to be healthy if im going to have more time.” 10:22:07 AM 3/30/04 “Good point, Maple...” 10:23:23 AM 3/30/04 “Yes Maple.......what good is life if it is not quality life.....” 10:30:46 AM 3/30/04
