My son raised an interesting question

“Hey shep, I don't think bit was saying older people work harder. I think he was just pointing out a difference in attitudes/approaches to life between the two groups and wondering out loud why that might be. I know my outlook on things has changed as I got older - when I was 22 I was out to conquer the world, become a partner, buy a big ole house, and all that stuff. Now I've just come to realize, both through trying to get there and losing a few things along the way, and through observing some other people who have gotten there and lost more that the price that has to be paid isn't worth it for me. I'd rather hang out with my kids in the evenings and weekends, see my friends when I want and do stuff for myself than spend 90% of my life working and scrambling and getting fat behind a desk.

I have a smaller office now than I might otherwise - but the office isn't the main focus of my life anymore - and I'm better off for it - so are those around me.

“well my thought process leans towards making money..you know why??? cuz at the first of the month if i dont ahve that check my belongings are on the sidewalk and im homeless for the time being...me being 22 i think of almost nothing but money...i want it..you know why? cuz when i get enough then i can have the TIME that i want...i dont want time now i want it later...



therefore assuming that it's possible someone is just standing on the corner, handing out $100 bills.

Got me a good job that I can probably have as long as I want it - the bosses are fair, the pay is fair and I still get to have time for the kids, time for myself and enough vacation flexibility to head up North for some Great Smokey escapes now and then - at least a couple times a year, maybe more.”

Look at it this way: Probably in the next 10-20 years, medical science will conquer the two biggest killers there are, heart disease and cancer. When they do, we can all look forward to lifespans significantly longer than we have already, probably on the order of 10-15 years. So, while at this point in time, it appears that I've less than half my life left to go, in actuality, if I can avoid having a heart attack (good chance, given the state of my cardio health at this time) and cancer (good genes here too, nobody in my family has ever had cancer) I probably won't really hit the midway point for, oh, 5-7 years.

So buck up!”

“I had the privilege of being home with my kids as they grew up.....we had a blast......not much money...but we found all kinds of fun things to do.....

now as a single adult...I wish I would have taken some of that time to get an education so I could get a decent job....

but....my answer is somewhere in the middle of time & money......

Walkindude: moved down to FL at the first of February, I was gonna starve and get evicted if I'd stuck it out in SC much longer. Only drag now is that I'm too damn far from the mountains, good thing I don't mind road trips.”
