He also knows how to backpack.” 1:43:25 AM 4/07/04 “Ok, in that case...He's In! LOL!” 1:47:34 AM 4/07/04 deeddawg “hey thanks for the info.. sometime soon i will have to cross that bridge to digital.. but its really hard. I have been shooting for so long that i work on composition and exposure to make sure its just so the first time. but you will have to help me learn the new way. Remember that in the "old days" you have to get it right the first time. Not that i have anything against digital, its pretty cool, and you have to have enough knowledge to do it right as well. The best advantage is the weight issue.. I dont know exactly how much my hassy weighs, but im sure its a ton. I no longer shoot professioally, you tend to loose your creativity when you have to mass produce it. I shoot for myself now.. I throw it in my kayak or my pack (35mm). But i find it really difficult sometimes to just shoot. I seem to (select) shoots, to over critize them befor i even push the button.. I have to learn to just have fun again. And i feel sorry for anyone whose had the love of photography and gone professional, poor souls. sorry for the rambling..” 10:07:30 AM 4/07/04 “I'm jealous! I could never afford one of those Digital SLR's, at least not right now. I am picking up one of the big-zoom cameras out there right now, Possibly a Minolta Z1/Z2, Olympus C740/750, Fuji S5000, Kodak DX6490, Panasonic DMC-FZ10 , or Canon S1 IS. decisions... decisions.” 10:27:46 AM 4/07/04 mouse “Change is difficult -- and I think that is one of the biggest barriers long-time film photographers encounter. Once you get used to a system, whether it be film, digital, or oil&canvas, you forget how steep a learning curve you had when you got into that system. When you look around and see all the new stuff you have to learn to switch systems it becomes very intimidating. But you make a great point that I think a lot of the pixel-counters often forget -- cameras are merely a tool by which the photographer creates an image that suits his or her purpose. Composition and content are really what it's about -- a mother, presented with a pleasing/heartwarming image of her child doesn't give a flip as to how the image was created or whether it is technically perfect. She doesn't care about megapixels, camera model, film type or any of that stuff -- it is the emotion the picture gives her that is the key. When you eventually dip a toe into the Digital ocean, take it easy and remember that things are really all that different at a high level. You still get to worry about aperture/shutter tradeoffs, depth of field, focal lengths, balancing "film speed" against "grain" (only it's called ISO vs. Noise), etc. And above & beyond it all, of course, Composition and Content. The rest of the stuff such as color profiles, post-processing, etc. can all be increasingly outsourced as the labs figure out that some folks prefer to just worry about the image and not all the computer details. Remember that just as with film you don't have to have a home darkroom, with digital you don't have to print at home. I prefer to send my files to a place like MPIX which is a division of Miller's Professional Imaging. I get my prints delivered in a couple days on Kodak Endura professional paper (IMHO it's superior to the Fuji Crystal Archive paper used by most consumer labs I've tried). There are an increasing number of pro labs, both local-service and mail-order, who have figured out they need to provide digital services.” 11:29:42 AM 4/07/04 “Uggh... That should read: remember that things aren't really all that different at a high level” 11:31:05 AM 4/07/04 deeddawg “Thanks so much for your info.. I will pick you brain once i purchase a digital.. And you are exactly correct in saying that the customer does not give a rats butt how the image got on paper.. Its the emotion, expression or the "moment" is what sells.. I have been on this board for many years and have always had good responses from you guys or gals.” 12:15:31 PM 4/07/04 “The Canon 100-300mm lens arrived today!” 9:53:09 PM 4/07/04 “That's a really nice camera, WW! Can't wait to see what that lens can do!” 2:55:58 AM 4/08/04 “i decided to sell my olypmus and some other stuff to get me the canon eos digital. awesome camera and I think 6.1 megapixels should be just fine. I know they now have 8 megapixel cameras, but do we really need 8 mp?? my most important question is: anyone know if I can use all my lenses from my canon eos a2e slr 35mm???” 11:33:19 AM 6/21/04 “As I read it Gem, all the EOS lenses will be able to be used with the EOS digital. I have a Tamron 28-300 lens that works fine with mine! Good luck. And welcome to the club!” 11:35:48 AM 6/21/04 “alright!!! Thanks!!! I do have some really cool lenses! whoohooo!!” 11:41:54 AM 6/21/04 “That was one of the biggest selling points for me.” 11:43:18 AM 6/21/04 “Someone had one at my daughter's dance recital this weekend. I checked it out/asked a million questions. It sure does appear to be a heck of a camera.” 12:01:58 PM 6/21/04 “You may not get as much for your Olympus as you might hope Gem. I've seen them new for just over $400 now (I've been thinking along the same lines).” 12:05:45 PM 6/21/04 “yeah, I saw that you can get them pretty cheap right. Dangid!! I think I need to change my starting bid. i have the 35mm camera I bought a while back, paid $1300 for the dang thing back then, now I prolly won't get more then $100 for it. That REALLY sucks!” 12:27:52 PM 6/21/04 “I'll give ya $101 for it” 12:30:01 PM 6/21/04 “Gem...yes if they are EOS or EF will work!” 6:00:50 PM 6/21/04 “My Cali trip showed me that it's time for a better camera...so...here's what I am looking at: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos350d/ I found it at one site very cheap...actually body only for $599. That's a great price. BUT... there site policies include a remark about that the product bought there could include a USA warranty, a international warranty or even a usaphotonation.com warranty. no warranty info on the camera. so now I am asking...should I? Or should I pay the couple hundred $ more {which would mean I would have to wait a couple more month to buy it...and I am soooo damn unpatient} Down to the point: I can't spend more then $700 for the camera body. [i have tons of canon lenses] HELP???? TIPS? ADVICE??” 11:03:00 AM 9/08/05 “Don't buy it if it doesn't come with a US warranty from Canon.” 11:06:47 AM 9/08/05 “because canon makes a bad camera? or because it's probalby a camera that has a japanese digital menu which I can't read?? LOL” 11:08:36 AM 9/08/05 “Gem, thats an awesome camera, but I would be careful buying it so cheap from any website.” 11:09:30 AM 9/08/05 “Gem, check out www.bizrate.com. People are able to rate the vendors based on a few different criteria. Maybe that will help. I just got a Canon S1 IS thanks to that site and www.cnet.com” 11:10:14 AM 9/08/05 “i'll check right now...thanks ox yupp embear...that's what I am thinking...the price is way too good. i also wanna know why the black camera is so much more expensive then the silver version? Couldn't find no info on what that is. i like the black one better...but I am not paying more just because it looks better... last edited: 9/08/05 11:23:27 AM” 11:15:37 AM 9/08/05 “go buy it on ebay. I bought the 300D with a lens and extras for under 580.00 (included shipping) the 350D was going for a little more and it included the standard 17-55mm lens” 11:32:32 AM 9/08/05 “Gemini, check the Dell computer site. I bought a camera for our son from them, and they matched the price of the lowest online price I could find. I directed them to the site while we were on the phone. The whole process took about 15 minutes, plus I didn't pay shipping even though it would have been extra with the other site. The price they met was about $100 less.” 11:32:59 AM 9/08/05 “If you do need warranty work done and you don't have a Canon US warranty, you will be screwed.” 11:35:01 AM 9/08/05 “I checked ebay...I put a bit in throu auctionsniper...but doubt it's high enough. lol wannabp...I try dell. had to clue the match prices. that's good to know. bit yeah... but most of the time those darn cameras break the exact day the warranty ended. but you're right...” 11:46:25 AM 9/08/05 “If you find a 300D without the lens, I have the "kit" lens for sale...real cheap. :-)” 11:51:22 AM 9/08/05 “Gem - some things you gotta watch for are thebait and switch - sorry, this offer is out of stock, for some more cash you can get... The other one is literally just getting the body only, then they start to charge you for items that should be in the box, like the battery, the charger, software, cables. Also if you get a grey market camera, Canon won't stand by the warranty. So something goes wrong then you're in trouble. Dell has been doing great deals on Canon, keep checking for coupons there.” 12:14:49 PM 9/08/05 “hmm...it was available when I put it in the cart...but I didn't order yet :D those idiots huh... anyways..grey market...that was the word I was looking for. hikin Mike...I don't need a lens...I have 4 or so at home. Heard the lens sucks anyway. :D Oh..>Dell didn't match the cost. I knew that. Dell is way too over-priced. $899 for body only. Too much, even for that camera. I found it for $749, I think that's a great price...so I may go for that one. USA Warranty and all. [well, didn't check if it's in stock thou], but the store got a great bizrate rating...” 12:40:21 PM 9/08/05 “wow...buydig.com all of a sutton when up with the price. Even bizrate don't have them in the top anymore. what happend withing one hour? Strange!!! I'll wait if I have to. PX is selling the same camera for $899 [including lens]. no tax or shipping costs. Still much more then on the net.” 12:53:17 PM 9/08/05 “Gem, why buy new when there are lots of good used camera's out there on ebay. The one I bought cost over 2000.00 18 months ago. How do I know that because the guy sent me the receipt from where he bought it at B&H along with the extra 5 yr warranty he bought. IMO I would go used unless you absolutely have to have a new one. I do wish buying a good camera would make you a good photographer like some of these guys on here..lol” 12:54:20 PM 9/08/05 “yeah...if I find it used...I'll buy used. I checked ebay...but you know how it is...ebay isn't all what it's made out to be. Those sellers try to scam you if there too. I am just gonna search for the best price now. I guess I don't have to order today dammit!” 1:27:58 PM 9/08/05 “Gem - Dell do vouchers offering up to 25% off their list price. I think the Reb XT was up for 699 last week. Not sure when the next one will run on that camera though.” 2:02:52 PM 9/08/05 “waaaaa....I missed it huh. figures. I do have $75 from dell which I can spend on anything over $71.91 or so... that's pretty good.” 2:11:32 PM 9/08/05 “Be careful with prices that are too low... If they're lower the Adorama or B&H Photo then avoid them... ;-)” 2:40:06 PM 9/08/05 “They've got a biggie on the 17-85 IS lens at the moment, $419 shipped against a standard $599 + shipping. Some good deals on other lenses too at the mo. Stack 83FF18TZXQ30W9 and W$Q7L298N206BK to get this price, for the 17-85 IS. And for the biiiiigggggg spenders. 20% off W$Q7L298N206BK seems on the 70-200IS F2.8, = $1,567.20” 3:35:53 PM 9/08/05 “I missed the one on the D20 Gem :o( - hoping a new one comes up in the next few days.” 3:45:43 PM 9/08/05 “dang..Y2...you're working for DELL?? LOL I do NOT need a lens, I think I have about 4 or them, including a really good lens. Actually all of them are great, but one. That's the reason why I wanna get another Canon camera. It's time for a new digital, so I thought I better spend a little more and get a SLR. Yeah...I hope they'll have a new sale on the canon soon.in the meantime I'll try not to spend my $$. not gonna buy from the other "cheap" site...i dont trust them.” 5:21:02 PM 9/08/05 “Gemini, I own a 300D and it just died, 6 months after the warranty expired. I was told it would be at least 250 to fix, if they could fix it at all. This is the 3rd digital camera I have owned that has died with-in 6 months of the warranty expiring. Lesson learned for me and many others- buy the extended warranty, MACK has one for about 79 bucks that lasts for 5 years. You'll be kicking yourself if you dont. By the way I just bought a 350D with the 5 year extended warranty for 827.99 total at Buydig. Good luck!” 8:39:01 PM 9/08/05 “Another way of getting a good price is too wait until they release the new model and buy the old version. I'm going to by the Canon Powershot S70 when the Powershot S80 comes out in October. I want a digital with a wide-angle lens and the S70 has one.” 8:44:27 PM 9/08/05 “Thanks :) Extended warranty it is. I had a canon 35mm [A1 I think] that had a dial problem a day after the warranty expired. the dial didnt' lock to any settings. I heard that was a comon canon a1 problem, but canon did nothing to fix it. only reason why I go back to canon is because I have all the lenses or I would say screw them.” 8:45:55 PM 9/08/05 “Gem, I pushed Dell a little. I got my laptop there and got their credit card when I did because there was no interest for long enough to pay it off and they said I'd get good deals if I got the credit card. I complained that I had not gotten any "good deals" since acquiring the credit card, and it was time to produce one. So, surprisingly, they did. Maybe you could get a lower price if you got a credit card, then just pay it off and you're done. Paige, bummer about your camera. last edited: 9/08/05 8:49:30 PM” 8:48:30 PM 9/08/05 “wannabp...I would've paid cash [debit/credit card] for it...but oh well... i'll go to buydig.com or whatever they are called. still a great price. anyways...I am looking at my lenses and here's what I have: Tamron 28-200mm promaster tele macro 100-300mm huh? 55??? I thought all my cameras used 58 lenses. Now I am confused... a canon macro 28-105 mm I also got the speedlite 540ez canon flash. i wonder if I should sell some of them on ebay...and just don't worry if I buy a canon or not.” 8:56:08 PM 9/08/05 “Gem....is your Canon 35mm an AE1 ??? If so your lenses won't work on the new EOS EF systems. The AE1 uses FD lenses- different mount. If your lenses say EF on them they will work on the Rebel XT. 58mm 55mm these are probably filter sizes.” 11:49:24 PM 9/08/05 “imho stay away from grey market cameras.” 2:11:52 AM 9/09/05 “David....can you say 5D? =) I can hardly wait!!! last edited: 9/09/05 2:20:35 AM” 2:19:46 AM 9/09/05 “I can't remember if it was an AE1 or A1. I know I paid $1500 back then. I sold it on ebay last year because I never got it fixed and i went digital. I realized that I had another small canon eos camera in my bag with the lenses, and the lenses do fit on that one...I have no battery for it...so I don't know if they work on that camera. if they fit, they should work right? and yupp...I will stay away from the grey market cameras. hey phils son, how are ya? :D last edited: 9/09/05 6:12:04 AM” 6:05:28 AM 9/09/05 “I checked. my canon lens says EF on it. the others don't. but I used them all on one camera, so they all should be the same. I decided to sell all of them, but one [my canon] on ebay. so...if someone want's them let me know.” 6:30:21 AM 9/09/05
