“hey thanks for the info.. sometime soon i will have to cross that bridge to digital.. but its really hard. I have been shooting for so long that i work on composition and exposure to make sure its just so the first time. but you will have to help me learn the new way. Remember that in the "old days" you have to get it right the first time. Not that i have anything against digital, its pretty cool, and you have to have enough knowledge to do it right as well. The best advantage is the weight issue.. I dont know exactly how much my hassy weighs, but im sure its a ton. I no longer shoot professioally, you tend to loose your creativity when you have to mass produce it. I shoot for myself now.. I throw it in my kayak or my pack (35mm). But i find it really difficult sometimes to just shoot. I seem to (select) shoots, to over critize them befor i even push the button.. I have to learn to just have fun again. And i feel sorry for anyone whose had the love of photography and gone professional, poor souls. sorry for the rambling..”

I could never afford one of those Digital SLR's, at least not right now. I am picking up one of the big-zoom cameras out there right now, Possibly a Minolta Z1/Z2, Olympus C740/750, Fuji S5000, Kodak DX6490, Panasonic DMC-FZ10 , or Canon S1 IS. decisions... decisions.”

“Change is difficult -- and I think that is one of the biggest barriers long-time film photographers encounter. Once you get used to a system, whether it be film, digital, or oil&canvas, you forget how steep a learning curve you had when you got into that system. When you look around and see all the new stuff you have to learn to switch systems it becomes very intimidating.

But you make a great point that I think a lot of the pixel-counters often forget -- cameras are merely a tool by which the photographer creates an image that suits his or her purpose. Composition and content are really what it's about -- a mother, presented with a pleasing/heartwarming image of her child doesn't give a flip as to how the image was created or whether it is technically perfect. She doesn't care about megapixels, camera model, film type or any of that stuff -- it is the emotion the picture gives her that is the key.

When you eventually dip a toe into the Digital ocean, take it easy and remember that things are really all that different at a high level. You still get to worry about aperture/shutter tradeoffs, depth of field, focal lengths, balancing "film speed" against "grain" (only it's called ISO vs. Noise), etc. And above & beyond it all, of course, Composition and Content.

The rest of the stuff such as color profiles, post-processing, etc. can all be increasingly outsourced as the labs figure out that some folks prefer to just worry about the image and not all the computer details.

Remember that just as with film you don't have to have a home darkroom, with digital you don't have to print at home. I prefer to send my files to a place like MPIX which is a division of Miller's Professional Imaging. I get my prints delivered in a couple days on Kodak Endura professional paper (IMHO it's superior to the Fuji Crystal Archive paper used by most consumer labs I've tried). There are an increasing number of pro labs, both local-service and mail-order, who have figured out they need to provide digital services.”

“As I read it Gem, all the EOS lenses will be able to be used with the EOS digital. I have a Tamron 28-300 lens that works fine with mine!

I found it at one site very cheap...actually body only for $599. That's a great price.
BUT...

there site policies include a remark about that the product bought there could include a USA warranty, a international warranty or even a usaphotonation.com warranty.

no warranty info on the camera.

The other one is literally just getting the body only, then they start to charge you for items that should be in the box, like the battery, the charger, software, cables.

Also if you get a grey market camera, Canon won't stand by the warranty. So something goes wrong then you're in trouble.

“Gemini, I own a 300D and it just died, 6 months after the warranty expired. I was told it would be at least 250 to fix, if they could fix it at all. This is the 3rd digital camera I have owned that has died with-in 6 months of the warranty expiring. Lesson learned for me and many others- buy the extended warranty, MACK has one for about 79 bucks that lasts for 5 years. You'll be kicking yourself if you dont.

By the way I just bought a 350D with the 5 year extended warranty for 827.99 total at Buydig.

I had a canon 35mm [A1 I think] that had a dial problem a day after the warranty expired. the dial didnt' lock to any settings. I heard that was a comon canon a1 problem, but canon did nothing to fix it.

I got my laptop there and got their credit card when I did because there was no interest for long enough to pay it off and they said I'd get good deals if I got the credit card. I complained that I had not gotten any "good deals" since acquiring the credit card, and it was time to produce one. So, surprisingly, they did. Maybe you could get a lower price if you got a credit card, then just pay it off and you're done.

If so your lenses won't work on the new EOS EF systems. The AE1 uses FD lenses- different mount.

If your lenses say EF on them they will work
on the Rebel XT.

“I can't remember if it was an AE1 or A1. I know I paid $1500 back then. I sold it on ebay last year because I never got it fixed and i went digital.

I realized that I had another small canon eos camera in my bag with the lenses, and the lenses do fit on that one...I have no battery for it...so I don't know if they work on that camera. if they fit, they should work right?

and yupp...I will stay away from the grey market cameras.
