Stove, that's a dangerous game to play if you don't really want the other job. You could get stuck with it.

I need to decide tonight whether to do the interview or not.

I'm going to change careers in the next few years. On one hand, the extra cash in my pocket over the next few years is terrific. On the other hand, I'm one of those people who feels horrible knowing I won't be a long term employee if that's what they're looking for.

Its a lot to think about.

SG, loyalty to a company is dead. They'd cut you in a heartbeat if they needed to, and you should look at the relationship in the same way.

Employment is a two-way street. They're using you for work, you're using them for money and benefits. When you become a liability to them (for whatever reason, not necessarily performance) you're gone. If the company you work for becomes a liability to you, then you should cut them loose as well.

You're correct about using another job as a stick to get your current employer to give you a raise. You have to be completely prepared to take the other job.

Y'all didn't read carefully.
I said I had pretty much decided to take the other job.
I was fully ready to do just that if I didn't get anything from the current position.
NEVER make a threat you aren't prepared to carry out!

What bit said about loyalty to a company.
The mass layoffs of a few years ago could happen again at any time.
Unless you are in the inner circle of a company, forget loyalty, because the company has no loyalty to you. Your are just a body filling a position, and anyone can be replaced.

I read ya right, Stovie, I was talking from my perspective (although not using the correct "person").

I'm putting a list of my responsibilities and actions that go above and beyond my job description, i.e. what value i'm bringing to the company. i'm setting up a meeting with my boss at the end of this week to discuss this. if i don't get a good feeling that they'd increase my salary, i'll let my boss know that i'll have to explore other options.

SG do whichever one makes you happiest. I took a substantial paycut to go from one job to the next just for job satisfaction and bosses who aren't out to cut your throat at the drop of a hat.

Hanging in there!
At a performance review my boss said, "You're not good for anything!" "That's not true," I replied. "I can always be used as a bad example!"

lol...I remember my worst boss telling me to use someone in our department as an example...when I told her this, she was shocked, as he had told her she wasn't up to his standards either...lol...

Some bosses just suck and shouldn't be in management.
