“OK, so I've been outbid by this person on a digital camera I'm looking at getting. I'm OK with it, if they want it more than me, fine.

But have any of you Ebayers ever upped your bid on something just to make the other person pay more?

“When I first bid years ago I found myself emotionally involved and bid to much to 'win'.
I always figure out what the thing is worth to me and set a max price I will not go over in my head. I stick to that price.
Also I never bid untill about 30 seconds before closing.

Usually I can find the same item new for a lower price than on eBay.

I found the A205 at Gateway, new, for $99. Gateway will ship for free, but I have to pay AL sales tax, so I figure it will end up costing me about $107 to go that route. So for Ebay, I've set my limit, camera plus shipping, to be $90. Maybe I'm being irrational, but I don't see the point of buying something at auction unless it's a deal. Bidding $90 on something and then paying $14 shipping on top would mean I saved a whopping $3 going the Ebay route.”

I got an email the other day because someone was ticked off about my shipping charges for the laptop and software. Hey, I just typed in the weight... I later noticed that I screwed up and that I charged the poor guy $25 for extra shipping costs. (it wasn't the guy that emailed me though)

What I like about this model is the whole thing with two batteries and memory comes in at 6.3 oz and fits in my shirt pocket.
It's the cameria I use for all my backpacking and website pictures.”

The two cameras I've bid on so far have gone for in the mid-80's. Add the shipping to that, and the prices are from the mid-90's to more than $100.

I bought a used Canon A40 2MP digital camera. The dude is selling it because the body is too scratched up, but he claims it works well otherwise. My winning big was $100.01, and with shipping and PayPal purchase protection, I ended up spending about $118.

I ended up buying a 128 MB Fuji XD card, a card reader, rechargeable NiMH AA batteries along with charger and a LowePro case. The case attaches nicely to my backpacking straps.”

I got spam containing a cute eBay scam. It looks like they are taking you to an eBay web site, but it's really

http://www.technovalue.com/.e

If you go there, they ask you for your eBay account info and your
credit card info. I don't have an eBay account, but I was curious.

Note that it says "your eBay billing informations are out of order", but otherwise it's fairly polished. A good way to collect credit card numbers I guess.

I think that is starting to happen alot, and between people like him and the outright frauds and con artists, ebay is going to have to clean up their act or face some serious problems.”

I read an article in our paper about ebay scams, it was on the Nation page. Ebay is starting to draw attention. This one was talking about people who aren't really selling anything and entice people to use Western Union transfers and such to pay.”

“Oh, the article said that the ebay people played down the problem and talked about percentages and such in terms saying that there wasn't really a "problem" and that they were looking into it. kinda made ebay look bad.”

They really push PayPal hard there, and warn people not to use wire transfers like Western Union. I used a Paypal Credit Card Transfer to pay for my camera. The other purchases were all from other e-tailers using my credit card.”
