No school today
No school today. It is a paid holiday for many of California State employees. It's OK since we can afford it since we pass all those bond measures to help education. Do any other states observe his birthday?

BTW. Got the word on our campus budget cut for 2004-2005...not good. Our campus has had the budget cut 28% over the past 3 or 4 years, now another 10%.

No celebrations in Ohio, but I know his significance in the realm of the Labor Movement. I salute the dude!

Cesar Chavez day?
I thought organized labor already had a holiday.

Labor day.

I'm willing to bet that not 1% of our school kids would even know who he is!

Should they know who he is? Who else should they know about? Those two questions alone could comprise a very heated debate.

You are most likely right though. When I first heard the name a few years ago I had to look it up.

Didn't mean to imply that they should, HPM. Unless they study him in some history related class, chances are that kids in the NY school system wouldn't know.

Now, when you get situations where the kids have no idea who the president is or common knowledge type people, then you have a serious awareness problem

Our school kids get three months off every year in honor of Dennis Kucinich. It's called summer.

I'm saying they shouldn't I'm just asking a hypothetical question.

Exactly what rich white guys do we celebrate with a national holiday? I can only think of three holidays that recognize an individual.

Washington's Birthday
Columbus Day
Martin Luther King

I work and my kids go to school on those three days.

Hey what's the deal with New Years Day? It’s got to be the stupidest reason of all to have a holiday.

So much for the theory that we only celebrate rich white guys.

Cesar Chavez was known for organizing farm workers and the most well-known thing they did was promote the boycott of table grapes. Buddha's link summarizes things.

He was controversial during the sixties, but he is essentially the "Martin Luther King" of the hispanic community. Our campus has the "Cesar Chavez Center for Higher Education".

The average public school kid in California probably knows a lot about Cesar Chavez.

Things must be different in the South. When I was a kid in grammar school, the rural areas let the kids out in the fall to pick cotton.

Spring Break here coincides with the golf tournament and lots of highschool and college kids work the concession stands.

I did learn about Cesar Chavez in high school in Mi. My then history teacher stated, back in 1988, that in a few years we'd have his birthday off, too.

I don't think Washington's birthday is even a holiday anymore. It's wrapped into President's Day now (with Lincoln's birthday).

That's cool.

Don't they celebrate Paul Bunyon's birthday in Maine?

Didn't Columbus have to borrow/beg the Queen to finance his trip?

And didn't he go bankrupt in the end?

Federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) establishes the following public holidays for Federal employees:
New Year's Day
Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Washington's Birthday*
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Columbus Day
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day

*This holiday is designated as "Washington's Birthday" in section 6103(a) of title 5 of the United States Code, which is the law that specifies holidays for Federal employees. Though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is our policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law.

Seems it's only a holiday in California. Met some college students at DVNP this weekend who had a long weekend because of it. Back in the day, we got Kasmer Polaski day off in Illinois. Yeah, yeah, so sue me for poor spelling.

The State of Michigan has made Cesar Chavez's Birthday a state holiday.

I think I'm going to put some lights up on my tree.
