Vicsaw's thread centers on Discover magazine. That reminded me of the old Omni magazine. Used to love reading Omni (the science mag, not the current sci-fi incarnation). They went belly-up, I think in the late 80's and sold their subscriber list to Discover. I enjoyed Discover for many years, too, but it was always geared towards the main-stream and wasn't as hard-core as Omni was.

Anyone remember the old Omni?

I remember the famous buttered cats!

The winning entry from a (not-so-) recent contest for "new scientific theories" sponsored by Omni magazine:

"When a cat is dropped, it ALWAYS lands on its feet; and when toast is dropped, it ALWAYS lands with the buttered side down. Therefore, I propose to strap buttered toast to the back of a cat. When dropped, the two will hover, spinning inches above the ground, probably into eternity. A "buttered-cat array" could replace pneumatic tires on cars and trucks, and "giant buttered-cat arrays" could easily allow a high-speed monorail to link between New York with Chicago."

I remember the old Omni. I used to pick up a copy in airports when I was traveling.

I think it was sacrificed as the Penthouse empire slowly died.

Science Fact And Fiction
My brother use to get Omni, and I dug it as much as he did.

So you're implying that it isn't being published anymore?

Pining for Omni? Maybe it was b/c it was dying but Omni started to become more & more like a Sci Fi mag the anything else. I remember UFO stories more than anything from that rag. It died as the Dailey Mirror of Science Mags.
