“Anyone here do this?” 5:47:21 PM 4/03/04 “i do...but here we call it arkansas wild pig hunting.... ever hear dof a razorback? there aere places where ferrell hogs are thick. there is no season and no limit, because they are EXTREMELY destructive to native habitats....they taste perty good too...if you get a 200 lb'er...not a big 400 lb boar.. also, they are very dangerous and will totally attack you if they think you threaten them or their young..... put out some corn and take i big gun...” 5:52:20 PM 4/03/04 “What type of rifle do you use, Strat? Is a 30/30 powerful enough?” 5:54:46 PM 4/03/04 “can't you just use an illegal snare, like they do in the southeast?” 5:59:08 PM 4/03/04 “LOL! I don't even know if I'm extremely interested in doing it. I'm just kind of testing the waters.” 6:00:20 PM 4/03/04 “I am not a hunter, but a friend of mine got one with a black powder rifle a number of years ago. I think there is actually black powder season for hunting some places in California. As I recall, he said the meat had a lot of flavor.” 6:14:07 PM 4/03/04 “That's what I'm reading, Phil. The hunting season on hogs is year-round as well.” 6:22:25 PM 4/03/04 “Hog hunting is year round because they're an invasive species. We use hunting dogs and a .357. I haven't gone at all since I've been in Florida due to a family rift, but it's a lot of fun and I've been a bunch before. Biggest one we ever caught can be seen on Phil's photo page.” 6:31:18 PM 4/03/04 “Yeh... You look like you're having a grand time, artex. The caption should read: "I brung de prettiest gurl to da bawl!"” 6:56:37 PM 4/03/04 “LOL! If you have the chance to go, definitely do so, if you think you'd be okay with it. I know some people are turned off by hunting, which I can respect. But if you're interested and have the chance, give it a go! Mmmmmmmm, bacon.” 7:32:38 PM 4/03/04 “Wild hogs eat anything !!! even venemous snakes!! Nobody knows whether they have a natural immunity or that the snakes just cant bite through their thick hides.Jusy dont shoot anybodies pet Pot Belly pig ,they had a big law suit going on in Cali a few years ago when some guys shot the neighbors pet and claimed it was a wild hog lol.” 7:33:47 PM 4/03/04 “I don't have any problem killing pigs. They're a non-native species, replicate like mad, taste good and are uglier than hell.” 7:57:58 PM 4/03/04 “Phaedrus, I'd take something a little beefier than a 30/30. That caliber will kill one, but might be a tad light for a big hog. Not too light, just a tad. My uncle got a wild hog from his deer stand last fall. We had feral ham for thanksgiving. It was pretty good. tasted like ham, just a little gamey. In our family you learn to love the gamey flavor of wild animals.” 8:09:14 PM 4/03/04 “phaeddy, i agree with zen. it'll do, but a little more punch would be better if possible. i've hunted them with a 30/30 before. last time i went after them, i missed with a 30/30, lol. i had borrowed it and had never shot it before so i was shootin low all day. always a good idea to shoot a target a few times if you aren't familiar with the gun. i huntes them with a 44 mag and a 25/06, and a 7MM as well. one time in far south texas, by the kings ranch, i called in a herd to my feed corn using a deer grunt. they came right to me... dawn and dusk are when i've found that they are most active...especially dusk. they come outta nowhere, it's erally a trip. i'll tellya a trick that will get you 4 hogs instead of 1.... get in a tree, and put out corn all around it...call them in..they generally run in small groups of 10-20. there will be all different sizes and colors in a group(herd?). so when they al get under your tree and are "pigging" out on the corn, whack a stick against the tree and make a loud WHACK sound...they will all bolt...but they'll come back in 10 minutes....then WHACK he stick again...they'lll come back in 5 minutes this time....WHACK, 3 minutes they're all back....eventually, they won't run away from the sound.....then you got um......BLAM BLAM BLAM...perfectly leagle....” 1:19:50 AM 4/04/04 “Me no hunter, but I have done as you ask. Me no hunt in many moons. Me find angry pig and sharp tusk make exciting way to go about wilderness. Me use shotgun with slug. Me hunt this way in area of Ishi Wilderness and near Eel River, where my forefather where loincloth. I never shoot one. Now I fish naked. After skeeter season.” 1:48:23 AM 4/04/04 “Strat, do you ever use dogs? I personally think there's more sport in it WITHOUT using them, but that's the way my family has always done it. Still, running dogs does add it's own set of variables.” 7:56:59 AM 4/04/04 “You're allowed to hunt in Cali?? Never hunted a wild pig but from all the accounts I've read bigger is better, bore that is. I would be leary of lead shotgun slug out pass 50 yds. Soft lead, thick hide and bone,, might make for less humane kill. If you can get your hands on a 45-70 use that with a 405 gr. slug next choice would be a .06 with a 220 gr. slug. One shot Nicky!” 9:08:50 AM 4/04/04 “...and I thought this was gonna be a thread about somebody gunnin' down the L.A. city council...” 10:24:27 AM 4/04/04 “lmao fatherG! arty, never hunted them with dogs. dogs wouldn't hold up too well in south texas with all the prickely pair cactus... briar's right, i forgot to mention...they have a thick boney plate in their head and many old timers have told me that if you shoot them between the eyes it'll bounce right off...and then they get MAD! i've tasted big 400lb bores and to me, they are alot gamier adn tougher and just yukkier than a nice 200 lb sow...... other notes...a 400 lb're doesn't look as big as you would think.. they are very fast” 3:29:42 PM 4/04/04 “An old guy told me a wild hog story. During WW II he was doing night guard duty somewhere in the States. He heard something approach and hollered, "Halt". The something came on faster and Bob leveled his cal .30 carbine and opened fire hitting the hog in the face several times. The bullets bounced off and the hog charged on knocking Bob off his feet without breaking stride.” 3:44:30 PM 4/04/04 “http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3670093249&category=7309#ebayphotohosting find that ugn and take it with you...if DA DUKE used it it has to be good...i usually take a .357 to back up my 300...havent been in about 3 years looking for wild hogs though...a few are to be found in the southern reaches of GA...never eaten the ones ive shot though...the meat smells like #&%!$ to me...dunno” 9:19:37 PM 4/04/04 “If you castrate a male piglet and let it go, it'll get big and fat as it gets older since it's not running around looking for sows. It also takes a lot of the hormones out of the meat so it's not so tough should you be lucky to catch one later on.” 9:22:15 PM 4/04/04 “oh crap....i've been castrated...will all that happen to me too?” 11:54:52 PM 4/04/04 “Poor pigs” 7:38:39 AM 2/10/12
