Pack books ?
What are you folks packing to read ?
Pulled James Joyce " Dubliners"
off the shelf , one of those books I had not got around to. Excellent short stories and a welcome addition to the pack.

Besides an occasional trail guide, I don't bring books along with me on the trail. Most of the reading I do on the trail are from the journals that are at most of the lean-tos when I’m not sleeping in my tent.

Wrong thread. I thought this was about Bart Starr and Vince Lombardi...back when they played real football...outdoors in the cold.

I can see packing something to read if I were going alone, but I always go with groups, so I usually end up talking around the fire.

I usually don't bring a book. When I do I weigh whatever I haven't read yet and take what's lightest, (I'm such a nerd).

Last book read on the trail was "O' Pioneers"

Guns Germs, and Steal
I'm reading this excelent book now called Guns Germ, and Steel. It's about how western Eurpeans are more advanced than primitive societies like Indians in the US and Africans in Arica and how they used that to there advantage to contol the world.

Kenneddy's
DWhy don't the Kennedy's make good boxers?

They can't take a shot to the head.

I don't bring any books to read with me. If I read anything it'll be a trail guide. That's about it though.

You suppose to read in your tent? Naaa!!

I take a small notebook to write in, rather than read. Used to take a book, but never got around to reading much. Usually "stuff" to do, such as poke around in the natural wonders or doze or make tea or do a tick check or doze or watch birds.

book in a pack
Have always carried a book in a pack , didn't always have the time or the energy to read one but always carried something. My kid sister used to send me books when I carried a pack for a living rather than sport.
These new LED headlamps are fantastic for reading in camp after my wife / hiking partner has hit the kip.
It doesn't happen in Wyoming much these days of drought but I can remember rainy weekends where a book helped pass the time.

Ruck, I'm impressed that you would read Joyce at all, but especially on a trip, which to me is the same as "vacation." What did you do that you wore a pack for a living?

On a backpacking trip, I think I would gravitate more toward Annie Dillard or some other outdoorsy-type reading or a guidebook.

If I do think I may need something to read, I'd be inclined to grab a book of poetry from our collection. Poetry books tend to be slim/light and the work is condensed and conducive to re-reading and contemplation. Someone such as Gary Snyder might be of interest to many here at TT, but there are a lot of poets whose work would be worth considering for back country reading. And it's not all like the stuff you hated in high school!!

I have goten myself in the habit of reading everynight before bed and often have trouble falling asleep if i do not read. Usually on the trail i read the trail guide. It usually only takes 3-4 pages
