No set itinerary or trip page entry yet, but I'd like to get a discussion going to see what everyone thinks.

I'd really like to basecamp at Lake Colden, because one goal I have is to photograph a bear in the wild, and as those who attended the first Buttkicker know, the area is filled with them and they aren't scared of people. (somewhat dangerous, yes, but this is a buttkicker, people).

The first full hiking day, I'm thinking the following: Up the trail running along Opalescent Brook, and then up along to Lake Tear of the Clouds, then summit Mt. Skylight (maybe also summit Mt. Redfield), then summit Marcy, head down the trail towards Indian Falls, take the trail at Lake Arnold, and summit Mt. Colden.

Yes, it will be a lot. But this is the BUTTKICKER. There'll be no wimps, whining, or otherwise. There will be no stopping to smell the roses. The purpose of this trip is to get your butt kicked, to strip you of your pride and dignity and show what a real hiker you are. You will be sore. You will experience pain. And you will love every minute of it.

P.S. No more staying in making stickmen for me. The machine is back.

Oh yeah, I'm shooting to plan it for sometime in September.

I'll have to think about it. I thought about it. I'm in.

Perhaps the weekend AFTER Labor Day? We don't want to deal with that madness again, do we?

Lake Colden sounds cool to me.
What, Buddur hasn't posted yet to say how crazy this plan is?

Good suggestion Pennsy. I'll have to wait for the thing to develope a little more before I set concrete dates.

Roam Around, I think you'd find the 'Dacks a wonderful place to roam around.

only thing I'm worried about schedule wise is getting the kids mother to look our for them for a few days, usually can be worked out if there's enough advance notice - 6 months should be plenty of time, one would think.

You might as well throw in Grey too. The herd path up is right next to Lake Tear.

Hmmm....An ADK High Peaks trip -- how can I get in on this? I was thinking about heading up that way that time of the year anyway.

Perhaps a bit later in September to catch some of the fall color? I'll have to watch this thread to see what develops.

Alas, my foul-smelling friend....but I think I shall not make this one...

One of my things did happen and I have a 6 month internship that will last till Nov 5 and unless I escape for the weekend I will not be attending this trip...

But notice I did not use the word, never....

Artex, just come on up to visit in NH. We had a big black bear in the front yard, not 10 feet in front of the kitchen window. I really thought I had those bird feeders hung high enough. They're down now. It was interesting to watch him skillfully open the one he didn't destroy and tear apart the two others.

Let's see if I live through my summer itinerary. This has appeal in a car wreck, suicidal sort of way. The only question is "am I dumb enough?" Historically yes, but I'm trying to get smarter as I get older.

It is a good time of year for the ADKs as long as it doesn't rain or snow.

I liked the loop around Mt Colden. Of course the top is bald & we hit an ice storm in August. An easy slide into avalanche lake. What amazed me though was traction. You climb down the steeper-wetter catskills and a there's a lot of slippery stuff. THe far side trail of Mt Colden had a swift creek running down it, but at the same time fairly sure footed. One of the few places where streams run in opposite directions. Marcy Dam (near the rangers house) probably has the most (well-fed) bears. Many people hang their food off the dam.

Many people hang their food off the dam.

The bears now call that hanging food room service.

YOU SWEET TAWKIN TAMTAYTAH!!! (How's my Murkin this morning?)

SNAKEYES, $hitcan smarter, I'm 55 and I finally saw just how much 'smarter' sucks.

BTW, Gray's a miserable beeatch and the trap dike might be hard to get to from where we'll be...

Just trying to get us all....

Yeah Lt, Gremlin hasn't bitten anyone on any of the trips I've been along on.

I like this trip idea.

How many miles over hill and dale is this going to be?

Or is it, "don't ask.....don't tell"?
MarkO

Somewhere between 10 and 12 miles I think.

Somewhere in the range of 6000' of gain. This could be wrong. I mapped it out last night, but I was also mapping quite a few things out so I may have gotten this mixed up with something else.

Indian Pass is cool!

The first section, if you are coming in from the Upper Works, is EXTREMELY muddy....

And after you get through the pass its all rocks...

Its cool when you get near Wallface...I was there in July and there were still pockets of snow...

Glad to here there's solid interest, including from the horny Canuck.

Again, I won't know for about a month or so what dates I can do it. Hopefully the weekend after Labor Day will be good, since that is extremely logical. If not, perhaps there will have to be a volume I and II?

I should be in. I wouldn't be able to arrive until early, early Saturday morning though. Sounds like the exact hike I want to do in the daks.

Your wifes a lot better looking anyway. She can come with me!!

Think I'm looking for rent a wife that weekend anyway.

BTW I hate that trail mix. Especially off the ground in the parking lot. :)

I just ate that trail mix, it wasn't off the ground....

Where the heck you been???

We thought we were being shunned by all....we haven't heard from some other locals either.

The Rent-a-wife will not be available either that weekend, unless you want to drive over 2000 miles to pick her up?
