Hummmm, I will keep myself as a maybe for now.

As long as we are going up, no problem. Down is when the gravy starts oozing

Grem, how was the hike up Algonquin?

A beeyatch for me, but wonderful for everyone else.

I've been missing my daughter really badly and drove up to see her Good Friday and back on Saturday (450 miles each way) because my hiking buddy could only get Sunday away.

The mud on the trail was stull frozen in the morning and there was very little snow. My leather boots are suspended in a previous relationship and so I wore my plastics. Plastic mountaineering boots are NOT made for muddy trails and rock hopping.

Up higher, the boots worked very well with my crampons. There was little snow and almost no rime ice on the summit dome.

The weather was perfect and there was almost no wind on the summit.

The mud wasn't bad on the way back.

How was the fishing?

The weekend didn't work out as planned. Went to a bon fire Friday night so as a result I was sporting a hangover on Saturday (I was still a little drunk when I woke up around 10 the next morning, not good), so I did leave the house once I got home. Sunday I had family obligations so I missed out on a great weekend for fishing.

This Saturday I’m supposed to go hiking with Redhawk. Maybe I’ll sneak my pack rod in with me.

lumberzac, what kind of fishing do you do?
Artex

I fish mostly small trout streams with ultra-light tackle with a quarter to half a night crawler on the end of the line. Nothing quite like an 8” trout on your line that bends the tip of your rod almost all the way down.

I assume fly fishing? That's cool. I plan on attempting to learn that soon.
Artex

Nope. I've never even held a fly rod before. Most of the streams I fish are too small or brushed in to use a fly rod, but Gremlin said he would teach me how to fly fish.

Ah ha. Yeah, fly fishing looks like a blast, due to the large skill level involved.

I may have to bring my pack rod in for this trip, but from the sounds of it I may end up too tired to use it.

Zac
you can still use a flyrod on ittybitty creeks.

there's a cast called a "roll cast"

that is very, VERY, easy to learn that requires no room at all.

This summer may be the summer I learn to flyfish.

there ya go.

the more beginners out there -- the better MY casting will look.

Even the smallest brushed in streams can be fished with a fly rod. The trick is to use a 6' or 6.5' fly rod with a short leader of around 6 to 7.5 feet and a short tippet. Put waders on and get in the creek and fish the creek upstream placing small dry flies into every feeding station you see. Look for casting lanes between branches or if need be roll cast, but usually roll casting for me isn't necessary. I use an Orvis One Ounce rod with 2 weight line and a CFO I reel. An incredible weapon for the small streams it was designed for. Use stealth and the natural features of the creek to your advantage when casting. Use anything to give yourself room and hide your body or shadow from the fish. I fish these small creeks every season and it's a challenging and rewarding fly fishing experience. The ultimate challenge is fishing midges in these small creeks. They are basically black flies and a mainstay in the diet of these trout. Having success casting a fly the size of a gnat with a 7X tippet is like playing chess with the fish and winning.

i use a 9 footer all the time.

if the stream is so small that i can't roll cast, then it's small enough for me to just reach out and drop the fly, kinda like using a crappie pole.

Good grief, this is the buttkicker thread, not the fishing thread. Unless you plan on getting your butt kicked while fishing on this trip, go away little fishies. ;o)

Won't there be several cliffs during the hikes to begin with?
Artex

Cliff Mountain. It's next to Redfield.

It's a scam, BTW.
Fly fishing is plain dead easy - in fact it's the most primitive and easiest of the angling techniques.

Gingrich said that trout demand and reward knowledge, while McLane noted that fish are so far down the chain they can't even burp.

As for flies, a small, brown furry phucker will do it for you any time.

Talk about buttkicker, did anyone see the new Backpacker magazine article about Ted Kizer? He hiked 46 ADK peaks, 141 miles, 56,000 ft. in a record time of 3 days, 18 hours and 14 minutes. He did 35 peaks of the Catskills, 133 miles, 37,000 ft. in 2 days, 15 hours and 24 minutes. That is some serious butt kicking.

SUGGESTION: start a new thread from the trips page linking it to the main page as well?

then let this thread sink and start anew? Besides, you all are only talking about fishing so nothing will be lost. heh heh

Dang, Rich - that is some serious buttkicking. He's my new hero.

Alright, I agree with lumberzac. Let's all pelt Pennsy with dead fish on the trip!

I'm not sure. Do you really want to hike with someone that was pelted with dead fish the day before?

HIKE PAINE!!!

Actually, you bring up a good point, pepsi, and it could work in the benefit of the overall trip. You see, Pennsy is in awesome hiking shape, and he's a speed demon. If he smells, it'll be motivation to hike ahead of him and therefore we'll all have to push ourselves harder.

Pennsy, it's an incredible story and he had support crews to pull it off. It said he went through 15 pairs of running shoes in 4 days. He did a few other records too. The guy used to live in a cave if you can believe it.

15 pairs of running shoes? YIKES!! Plus, I can't imagine running shoes on those trails. OUCH!
While I don't quite understand the need to run and set records on hiking trails, I certainly admire the feat.

yeah yeah... Pelt Pennsy. Sheesh! Even a more need to trash this thread and start over. Pfffffft.
Pennsy

I bet all he remembers is putting one foot in front of the other. He couldn't have been able to stop and see much going at that pace. They had a picture of him getting his foot patched up so maybe the running shoes weren't very good protection.

If you want to get technical he is only a 45 and a halfer because he descended Whiteface via car. Still an amazing fete considering the previous record was a least a day longer.

Pennsy

Yeah, but my sled was small and my backpack carried the weight to far in the back. Not representative of my true skills, dammit. I can sled like the wind!
