never again will I send one of my children away.
I have not slept good for almost a week.
twignut left yesturday. She called at 4:00am to tell us she had arrived. Poor thing had the flight from hell!
bad weather, loud kids...8 hours on the plane.
But she arrived safe!
then called at 7:00am and wanted to come home. i feel so bad for her. she has jet lag big time. she will be fine after she gets a good nights sleep. so between a cold and worrying about twigy, I am sooo tired.
So is treebeard.we need a vacation!

In 2 weeks our 14-year-old daughter is going to Minnesota for 5 days with the school jazz band. It doesn’t sound like a big deal, but as it gets closer my wife and I get more and more nervous.

Where did the kid go? Europe?
Where did she go that she got there at 4 AM?

How long is she gone for and what is she doing there? Sounds like a fun trip to me. My wife and I took my neice and my mother with us to Scotland and England one year for a wekk. We got there and my neice was homesick the first night so I let her call her mom. After that she was fine. She was 13 at the time.

When we took her sister to the Cotswolds for a week, we waited till she was 15. The minute she heard the Brit accent on the flight steward, she never looked back.

The other neice and nephew were 17 and 14 and went together with us to London. They were fine with the whole trip.

Gotto let them go do their thing at some point and relax about it :o)
I'm sleepy too. Have a friend over and went out drinking last night. Scraped myself and him out the bar at 3am. Bar owner loved him, charged us $30 between us for six hours solid drinking. Women kept telling him that "men with accents are hot (he is a pretty boy)," so good night all round. Now I just got to face up to the hangover.

When I was 16, my mom let me go with a friend to Great Bend, KS, for the summer, to be in a drum and bugle corps.

I drank, caroused with women, went to bars while underage, got into trouble, and had the time of my life. I made it home okay. Being on my own, taking care of my own stuff, was one of the best experiences of my life.

ScorchFire-

A few words of advice, use or don't at your own discretion. Hydrate yourself silly before the flight. Carry a Nalgene water bottle and drink from it often on the flight. Get water from the flight attendants whenever offered. Try to cut caffeine from your diet before you go. Don't drink alcohol 24 hours prior to the flight....and especially, don't drink on the flight.

All of this will help keep you hydrated and you'll get over the jet lag much quicker. Try and stay up until somewhere around a normal bedtime the first day you get there, especially coming home. That will help you adjust more quickly.

Good luck!

Hey Maple leaf
Are you interested in a street sign? Over in Eagle River (Pekka's neck of the woods) there is this rustic, log street sign that has "Maple Ave" carved into it. I laughed when I saw it, thinking immediately of liberating it and sending it east. Interested?

Reminds me. Shortly after moving back to this area I was visiting my brother in the southern part of the state. He had been smoking an ilicit substance and, I think, someone must have slipped some into a few brownies I was eating. Anyway we walked down to the nearby lake to view this rich guys house out on the point. Smugly posted on the house was a sign loudly proclaiming "My Point Exactly". Upon seeing the sign I collapsed to ground laughing uncontrollably - which one is wont to do when unknowingly (he emphasized) eating those brownies. When brother Paul got me to a state of semi-lucidity he asked me what was so damn funny? I told him that before I die I will steal that sign and replace it with one saying "Point Well Taken." I haven't got it yet, with all his security lights, but eventually I will. Anyway, interested in a "Maple Ave" sign?

By the way, all you young people, don't buy all that crap everyone tells you about growing up. It's highly overrated.

When I was fifteen I went across the country with a friend and her family. Every night we were out the back window of the RV and in search of boys. We found them too. ;)

Don't worry Maple and Tree, your daughter knows what you expect of her and what you've taught her. She'll act accordingly. Even though I found the boys every night nothing much ever happened (just alittle kissing). She'll come back safe soon enough and have great memories from this trip forever.

Thanks for the encouraging words, Sass! I suspect she will. I'm hoping this helps broaden her greatly. The aunt and uncle she's staying with are good folks and should keep her rather busy. It's just oour first time hitting the 'milestone' of letting one of our children go away alone like that. When I finally cut her loose at the airport, she went from excited to nervous in an instant. So, I encouraged her to go past the security checkpoint (where I couldn't go) and get to her gate. I figured the longer she longers, the worse it would be for both of us...

Snake man! She's out to lunch and would probably love the sign. But, I couldn't encourage you to do something that may be illegal and get you in trouble. (wink)

Remember the "What are you known for thread?" My claim was never getting into anything I couldn't talk my way out of...at least most of the time. Now I have to make a plan. This calls for stable minds and clear thinking - no point calling my brothers.

Sorry you guys are so tired...Twignut will be fine!

If it make you feel any better - I've been sick for 5 days - it was so bad yesturday - that I could'nt open my eyes even to go to the store and get medicine or to eat...

Thank goodness for friends - a friend of mine finally came to the rescue with a vaporizer, medicine, and most importantly I think, some company.....being that terribly ill and all on your own really sucks.

Hey - how was the party?

Well Nigal, I happened to conduct a little survey today to find the percentage of TTers who missed you too. Nothing too scientific of course, but the results were quite interesting:

18% said: "yes"
10% said: "no"
8% said: "Who's Nigal?"
64% said: "Shouldn't this be fuego?"
