Well, there a "status symbol" to the "have nots", so we better git used to them being around.

In the meantime, we need to do what we can to prevent them being used against us.

nuclear weapons aren't obsolete - not by a longshot. They're still very effective deterrents.

I think our precision conventional warfare tactics are much more impressive, don't you think? What does wiping out a city do? Not a lot. If some piddly country hit us with a lone nuke we would invade but I doubt we would hit 'em back with nukes.

Deterrent? An unused weapon? No. Being able to squash a country in no time with conventional weapons is a deterrent.

We need to let go of the old thinking.

"If some piddly country hit us with a lone nuke we would invade but I doubt we would hit 'em back with nukes......."

This is similar to our "mutual assured destruction thang" that kept the Ruskies in check.

Yes, our offensive power is strong, but we will always bow to nuke blackmail if we do not have a great defense.

As the saying goes, the best offense is an overwhelming, powerful and destructive defense.

Look at our reaction to NK, and tell me nukes weren't a deterrent to U.S. aggression.

We have the ability to destroy nations without nukes. Nukes are about as barbaric as you can get in warfare. They should be destroyed. And if not then why are we wasting all this money on conventional warfare?

I'm not sure we could attack NK with or without Nukes. China would probably still not approve of that.

Who let all the riff-raff in here?

They should be destroyed.

Oh that's a grand idea! Then as soon as every country in the nuclear club disarms, some tinpot dictator will make one and blackmail the rest of the world! You can destroy the weapons, but you can't destroy the knowledge. You can't put the genie back in the bottle. Until nanotechnology comes along with fissile material destroying nanobots, nukes are with us.
Mutt

How could a tinpot dictator blackmail us with a couple of nukes? Is he going to destroy us?

We don't make Gas or Bio weapons anymore, do we?

Another thing: is anyone worried about the deteriation of the Soviet Nuclear arsenal? Or is that all hype also?

Uh folk, my point about missile defense was less about the long-term strategy of missile defense and more about ignoring the larger danger to concentrate on it.

Also, as to tax cuts, I agree that tax cuts stimulate the economy, but at what cost? Bush did not cut expenditures while cutting taxes, so we have deficits.

It certainly wasn't as immediate, though. And the importance is debatable, especially when one considers all the other deterrents we have to missile attacks.

I read in USA today a few months back that he wants a whole new arsenal of nukes with a focus on tactical nukes. The report said he wanted to start testing them too.

It depends if you have a panty-wearing estrogen-induced liberal in charge, or a testosterone filled he-man running the show.

If North Korea took out San Francisco or Seattle, Kerry would go immediately to the United Nations and bow down before France and Germany and race back to North Korea and plead with them to not ever do anything like that again. Ever. Okay, that might sound too harsh. Pretty please don't do that again? Seriously, we would really appreciate it.

if Bush were president and NK nuked bombed Sanfran or Seatle I bet he'd lock himself in a bathroom with a bottle of JD and a couple lines of coke and the next morning whipe the snot and blood from his nose and ask Rumsfeld and Cheyney"what did you decide to do?"

laqtis, since we're talking polls here, the polls say the vast percentage of Americans do not think Rumsfeld should resign or be fired. Is that a lie, or were you referring to something else? I'm easily confused.

I don't think Americans trust Rumsfeld. When I talk to people, repubs and dems and those unafiliated, they don't talk kindly of Rumsfeld. The media is making him look like the most evil man alive (go media). I think more and more he is becoming a liability for the Bush re-election campaign. If I were Bush I'd fire him. But hey, what is a snake with out a head?

Violin, Kerry wants to kiss international a$$. He does not have a strong military record in Congress. I won't dispute his Vietnam combat stuff even though many do, but to me his tactics and actions post-Vietnam are not honorable. You obviously differ.

Buck

Bush is sticking behind Rumsfeld. Well, that didn't sound right. He's not sticking anything up Rumsfeld's behind, he's just sticking behind him. And you may be correct, Bush might get a "rise" in the polls if he dropped Rumsfeld, but it's just another example of Bush being a man of principle and conviction and not just at the mercy and whim of polls and popularity. He's willing to sacrifice popularity for conviction. It's what I like about him.
