Savage Gulf

“I think I'm going up there this weekend, but I was wondering how the ticks were. Last time I was there was almost 2 years ago, and the ticks were horrendous. Anybody else been lately?”

“I didn't run into any my last two trips, but it was colder.

There was a trip to Hobbs Cabin last year in late fall, and I think we lost a backpacker or two to the ticks. You might get lucky though, it's still a little cool for them.”

“I would recommend staying on the trail. I hiked the nearby Fiery Gizzard last March, went off trail and fell down the hill due to the muddy ground. I don't think you'll have any problem with the ticks though. They don't come out till May normally and it has been kinda cool. Have fun though. It's really pretty back in there.”

I was ate up by hundreds of ticks last fall..( I am not exagerating...ask Super Troll and Rocksea)

take a bunch of garlic pills before the trip and LOTS of Deet........I wore long pants.....but that made it worse......

It may still be too cool for them yet.....

“A friend and I are going up that way. He wants to do Fiery Gizzard, and Im alittle partial to Savage gulf. We will be up there Sunday and Monday, but Im not yet sure which we are doing, or what our route is. Ill post tommorrow if I have a better idea what its gonna be. What stretch are yall doing?”

“We aren't exactly sure yet, either. This will be our first trip there. I'm going to the Stone Door Ranger Station when we get there on Sunday to get my bearings...I definitely want the scenic views the rim has to offer. The forecast for rain on Monday is up to 80% now, so I think we will stay in the same spot both nights.”

I would make it MLK weekend which is the 14 thru 16, but I don't know if my wife will go for it. She likes me home on holidays.

“The Ranger's will come by and check permits and for alcohol.
Alcohol is not permited in the Park.

“Here we go! I read through the Gavage Gulf trip Dayhiker planned a couple years ago to prep me for this one.

I will chek with the wife this weekend and post when I know about dates.

“We received a holiday from work on MLK day. But, when it was started, the company took away our Holiday on the day after Thanksgiving Day. We still had a floating holiday for our birthday. We could take it anytime during the year. So, to keep the four day Thankgiving Weekend, I would take it on the day after Thanksgiving Day. The net result of this was that I would be celebrating my Birthday Holiday on MLK Day, whether I wanted to do so or not. All thanks are due to our government in D.C.”
