If you were going back to school - and discovered that something you wanted to focus your studies on was offered at a different school - in a different state - closer to family - with the eligibility of financial aid almost garunteed....

and you could get your Master and PhD at the same school of you choose....

and the school has 12 research facilities in one field alone

what would you do?

It would depend on how close I was to finishing at the current school.

Check to see how close the nearest Hooters is to the different school.

I chose my school based on how far away my family was. I wouldn't go closer for any reason.

:(

It would be a better education and they are involved in research that I'm interested in.

Bad part? I'd have to establish residency to get the cheap tuition rate.

I don't really like the state.

Another place I'm thinking of going to would also involve waiting a year until residency is established.

I'm kicking ass in school right now but not satisfied with what it has to offer...but to wait a year?

How long until you finish your degree?

This is my first semester going post-bac.

I'm not that involved yet...but I love being back in school and really excelling at it

I don't really want to wait a year but I've realized that the school I'm currently at does not have all that I'm keen on...and I'm not too challenged by my fellow students.

A year goes by quickly...I could always just take one course at a time until a resident...and if I get money from the school...well, then...hell, it won't matter all that much then.

Go for it. If you had a year left I would say finish the current degree, but seeing as you just started what do you really have to loose in the long run.

Twinks stay where you are but transfer residency to the state (FL?) that way you can go cheaper when the time is up.

twinks, you have been batting this back and forth for about a year now.

I say go for it. it seems that everything you want is in Fla. family, school, friends

I think this has been something you have really wanted to do for a long time. you have talked about Washington State and now Fla.
follow your heart. you will be happier in the end.

That's the debate...

Go to FL

or

Go to Washington

both schools have exactly what I want...my parents are considering helping me out with a car....keep fingers crossed

The cons?

Washington - so very far away from family and I'm not at all familiar with the environment but it's beautiful

Florida - don't really like the place but it's close to family and I know alot about the natural environment

Both schools are awesome - both schools are affordable once residency is in place - both schools are involved in this particular type of research - my grades are good so I think I have a very good chance of getting into either school...it's just hard to pick where to go...family is good to have near...ugh...I NEED TO MAKE A FARGIN DECISION!

flip a coin,

or, if you come to FL, tell the folks that instead of a car you'd like a nice expedition kayak instead.

Seriously, go where you can get the best exposure to the state of the art research, - that's what'll make the difference in career opportunities.

All else equal? Washington, at least if the choice is FL or WA. WA wins, no doubt.

Either way, move...

Florida, the easy way out?

Washington, much harder but more satifying?

That's all I can say...

Follow your heart and plan well.

Maple is right, you have been tossing this around for a while...

That year will pass quickly...and it will give you time to settle in and establish yourself to where you choose to go.

A No-Brainer.....................All Puns Intended
Hmmmmmmm...to stick around at your current school and be "not satisfied with what it has to offer" or to go somewhere else with most expenses paid, get a better education while your studies are more focused on what you want to do. That's a tough one.

What to do, what to do???

If I do decide to blow on out of here - it will be to Fl - then after I'm back on my feet and feeling healthy again and ready for the Masters - then I can move somewhere else - like where I get accepted for the Masters if I decide to leave Fl - hopefully that would be a place like UW in Seattle....so the move to Fl would probably only be for two or three years

I could get a kayak....I could get that scuba cert I always wanted...I could live in an apartment with a pool....I could remember what it's like to wear a bikini and get some sun!

Couldn't you apply to a grad program and see if you can some type of Grad Assistantship?

Then maybe you could get reduced/free tuiton?

And I will say this as your friend.

I think doing the 2-stage thing would be a waste of valuable time...

Why not look at what Universities in Florida offer programs that you are interested in....

Then you could do your grad work, kayak learning, and scuba learning there and use those experiences/ abilities to apply for a job in the Seattle area? Meanwhile you could be near family.

You could always do the Masters in FL and then the PhD program at Washington, lots of places like the degrees to come from different schools, gives you varied exposure.

uhmm...to legally establish residency, you have to live there. Hence, the term residency. However, there are certainly ways around it with some help. Legal?...no, but it's been done. I suspect ChicagoMark will be able to give you a few tips.

Get an address that you can use.
Go there and get a driver's license.
Open a bank account.

its all about appearances.

might be good to actually have some mail sent there.

even better if you have some utilities in your name.

for starters.

I'm sorry I didn't relocate to Seattle/Portland in '80 like I had planned.

But, I did what I did and said, "How was it kid, kid?"...
and was politely told,
"Pretty good, not bad, I can't complain."
But actually, everything is just about the same.

Have officially decided against Seattle until after the Master's - by then who knows where I'll be...

After much internal debate and close friends/family discussions....I've decided to say farewell to NYC! So, it currently looks as though at the end of the summer I'll be a flatlander again! Yikes!

But the school has what I want - I'll have family near - and I'll be out of this rathole of a city!

but its the best thing for you. I know you had to dig deep to find what was best for you. I know it was very hard. We are always here. you will always have a place to crash when ever your in town. so you have an idea as to when your leaving?
you renting a truck and driving it down?

Don't worry - I have a semester to finish and then the summer to work and save some cash....so as it stands - I'd like to move near the end of August...yep - will drive down in either a moving truck or car w/h trailer (depends on what's cheaper)

at least when you're lonely in Fl there's always a nice beach to lay out on and tan your worries away!
