Avoid Logs to Avoid Ticks, Experts Say

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Want to avoid ticks? Avoid sitting on logs, experts advised on Thursday.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, used themselves as bait to see where the greatest risk of picking up a tick was, and found logs were the worst places to sit.

"We sat on logs for only five minutes at a time, and in 30 percent of the cases, it resulted in exposure to ticks," said Robert Lane, a professor of insect biology who led the study.

"It didn't matter if we sat on moss or the bare surface; the ticks were all over the log surface. The next riskiest behavior was gathering wood, followed by sitting against trees, which resulted in tick exposure 23 percent and 17 percent of the time, respectively," Lane said in a statement.

Writing in the Journal of Medical Entomology, Lane and colleagues said they were looking for ticks carrying Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that cause Lyme disease.

"If we're going to develop effective strategies and educational programs for the prevention of Lyme disease, it is critical that we understand how people are exposed to the ticks that transmit the bacteria in the first place," Lane said in a statement.

"We intentionally looked at behaviors that people would typically engage in while spending time in the woods."

Sitting in leaves was not especially risky, they found.

how come this study only appears to have coverd "sitting" besides gathering wood.

Walking through long grass I believe would be number one more exposure - and percentage wise in my life, i can assure you that walking through grass is number one.

I’m kind of worried about taking Honey Dog hiking during tick season because it’d be way to hard to find them on her. I found a pill called Startab or something that kills everything on your dog within 24 hours. I figured if I take her I’d just give her one at the end of the hike and kill any of the little bassturds that might be on her.

Yeah Nigal its the little baby deer ticks that carry lyme and I bet they would be hard to find on a dog!! I never even saw the one that gave me lyme disease!!

you can put "top spot" on the nape of your pets neck, once per month to kill ticks and fleas

what about spritsing the log?
This may sound foolish, but what if you sprayed the top side of the log with a little deet spray if it is a log at the campsite your using for the night, say one
you sit on around the fire? Any thoughts?

we have 3 dogs, they're out in the woods with us alot.

Frontline is the best flea/tick stuff - hands down.

the other stuff, especially "topspot" is not nearly as good, and is also EXTREMELY TOXIC if you have any cats or other pets.

my girlfriend is a vet. tech. and she says they get cases all the time of dogs who have severe reactions to topspot.

if you want to be really safe you can vaccinate your dog for Lyme disease.

oops. sorry. after typing that, i talked to my G.F.

it's not top-spot she says is bad.
it's PRO-SPOT that is so bad.

basically, any flea/tick stuff with pyrethrums is bad news.

I think the lyme vaccine for pets is controversial, my veterinarian here on the cape doesn't recommend it

Tick On Logs Are Only After Your Balls
I too also heard mixed reviews wrt the lyme vaccine.
