If I remember right it is mostly a fire road up from Windsor furnace. Although the razors edge is in there some where. Been years since I hiked there,

Is the peanut shop still in Port Clinton? or was that Hamburg?”

“the peanut shop is still up and running in port clinton, i belive its fire road to the shelter and its easy up to the pinncal, and there are so many different ways to get there that its easy to get lost, or take an easier way.”

“I went to buy some AT maps at REI today and the northernest map they carried was 93 to the Sesquahanna. I may have to buy some when I am in Reading visiting family this weekend. I can do some scouting while I am up there too.”

“if there is a district forest service office close by they can usually mail the topos, anybody know a phone number for the closest district office?”

“Calmwater was kind enough to scan me a trail/topo map of Hawk Mt. and the surrounding AT from his PA AT book if anyone wants me to email it to them.”

“Hey Fritz is posting! Haven’t seen you post in awhile I hope all is well with you. I don’t know if I can do 3 overnighters in 3 weeks that may be pushing my luck, but maybe I could try to get in a day hike one of those days.”

“cool. I'll be up in PA on Friday afternoon sometime. Prolly camp at one of those shelters not far off the road that first night.”

fritz, prob will hike from one of the shelters til we hit the border of the AT/hawk mt. and set up camp around there because u can't camp in the sanctuary. then continue on through hawk mt. til we get to the visitor's center.. we'll shuttle a couple cars over there.

I was drivng along . .. minding my own business . . ..looking for my lunch.. ..and passed a sign for Hawk Mountain.


I was on Route 78 headed east towards Bethlehem. I stopped for lunch at a CrackerBarrel at an exit that had a MASSIVE Cabela's . . .

“You were just up Route 61 a piece, maybe 15-20 minutes away.”

“Not too far... it's in Kempton, PA.
Cabela's is in Hamburg, PA... about 15 minutes away or so (like Geo said).”

“I am still deciding if I should go to lost cove or on this trip. Kind a like the reference to the "bouldering and rock hopping"....

It really depends on when I can leave. It's a long way up to PA”

“yes, I'm leaving S. Fl around 1:00 or so on Thursday, so I'd be getting to Columbus around 9:00?? i guess that night.”

“wait, thats not right, it'd prolly be earlier than 9:00, maybe 7:30 or 8:00.”

“I was at Wolf Gap, Va/WVa car camping and day hiking Friday and Saturday.”

I posted the route on the trips page. Once we get into the Sanctuary there are several possible routes. I figure we can all map out and agree on which to take. The River of Rocks is neat.”

“dc is about 2.30 from my house, so prob about 3 hour drive for u, ynami”

“i live in hamburg, and it takes me about 2;45 min to dc, if you don;t hit traffic, wish i could come, but i;ll still be on my way back home for college, have fun.”
