Lt, that is something I have always wanted to do, but man, I gotta admit. I am not in shape for a trek like that!

Tree the minimum speed is only 6mph. I am worried about the 42 miles myself but they have trucks following and there are some short cuts.

Anybody who hasn't done this....should sign up....it's an easy 42 miles....no hills to speak of...

I did the inaugural 5 Boro Bike Tour way back when....and it was a blast...how cool is it to be able to ride your bike across the Verrazano....

I rode around New York City on a mountain bike years ago with a friend who lives there. He showed me around and it was so different from where I was used to riding. I thought it was a cool way to see the city. I found the people I met were friendly and NYC to be a nice place to visit.

Bike New York was awesome!!! I highly recommend it as a worthwhile event.
We started the ride at 8amNear the World Trade Center site in Manhattan. Imagine 30,000 plus people on every type of bike you can imagine. The strangest was a guy with a blonde mohawk dressed only in black spandex shorts. He had no water no food and no bicycle seat!!!
The start was very congested with the crowd coming to a stop several times. Lots of bumping and people falling over.
We rode north into Central Park, very pretty with the flowers and the blooming trees. then over the Harlem river and into the Bronxfor a short ride to the Madison Avenue bridge back into Manhattan. From there we rode down FDR drive (in the rain) and across the Queensboro Bridge into Queens. First big uphill with a couple of accidents on the downhill. Lunch was at Astoria Park. We continued through Queens and over the Pulaski Bridge into Brooklyn. Then came the Verrazano Bridge, you know they don't seem that steep and long when you drive over them. The top of the bridge was in the clouds People were dropping like flies on the way up. A quick ride down, more people dropping on the wet pavement. Then the Festival and end at Ft Wadsworth. I know that this is a very short trip report but oh well.

The ride was great and the people along the course were all very nice. Lots of kids out waving and cheering us on.

LT ..

How long a ride was that?

I am having significant trouble remembering to get in and out of my cleats when stopping, or remembering but then not being able to execute.

I would STINK in a crowd like that!! I would fallevery two seconds.

I did a 45 mile ride up in the Avon, Collinsville, New Hartford, Barkhamstead Resivoir and Sundown Ski area.

Some absolutely mammoth hills.

How long was the NYC borough ride, and how long did take you (I understand it wasn't a race or anything . .I just wondered what kind of time commitment it was).

Lee it was only 42 miles and the only real hills were the bridges. We started at 8am and finished at around 1pm. There were a few mandatory checkpoints before the major bridges and a stop for lunch.
Really a very easy ride.

Lee I guess you have clipless pedals? I have thos on my Mtn bike and I used them for the tour. You should try them in the woods if you think the road is tough. Loosen them up almost all the way. Your feet might actually fall out once in awhile but it makes it easier to get used to them.

LtHiker, I used to live 5 minutes south of the Verazano Bridge in Brooklyn (Bensonhurst) before I moved to WA.

Hubby & I used to put our bikes on the train & get off in downtown Brooklyn & go over the Brooklyn Bridge. We would stop in the middle and break out some booze with cheese & crackers, and hang out for a while. This is at midnight.

Then we would bicycle around NY, which is fun to do at night when there aren't cars around, just hookers, lol.

We rode just a little bit into Central Park & sat on a bench. Then we see men coming one by one and going behind this one tree with bushes around it. One goes in, one comes out. Who knows who or what was back there doling out.....well, uh, let me just leave it at that.

Yeah it really could have been just about anything behind those bushes.
