I hate to be asking so many questions on the forum, but we're going on a week long hiking trip, and I want to be prepared this time. Alright I have a used Dana Design Arcflex Terraplane... I couldnt tell you when in was made... but it says it was made in bozeman mt... it's green. Medium size also. Getting it fitted is not really an option because their are no dealers close by. I've been training with it a little bit and it doesnt feel quite right... not as comfortable as i wish it was. Dana Design doesnt have manuals for that old of a model... does anybody have any general guidelines or tips for fitting it comfortably? or maybe manual or something? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well, they couldn't have changed that radically. So what's in the current owners manual should steer you the right way.

Make sure the hipbelt is velcro'd as far down as it will go...otherwise it won't transfer the weight to your hips--this was a problem with mine until I read the manual. Consult the manual for other adjustments...but the hipbelt one is most important.

I checked the manual, but it didn't really offer too much advice on fitting the pack...

Ya I think my hipbelt is up too high... It's on my abs actually...

In order for Dana's to fit properly, you musn't touch them for at least a month.

Seriously, go to your local gear shop, and they will fit the pack for you. Be sure to buy a bandana for their trouble.

Make sure the hipbelt is velcro'd as far down as it will go...then you'll have to move the shoulder harness up and down with the velcro behind the backpanel until the straps sit on your shoulder in an upside down U. Keep the load lifter straps (above the shoulders) loose while fitting. Also keep the hipbelt trim straps loose until you get a good fit. When you load it up pull the hipbelt trim staps tight and then adjust the load lifters on the shoulders until it is comfortable for you (tigher = less pull on the shoulders, looser = more weight on shoulders).

Juztyn - have you tried tightening the shoulder straps? Once snug, it should bring the top half of the pack closer to your body, and therefore MIGHT bring down the waist belt some to where it should be.

If not, it's possible your torso may be too long for the pack. Check the manufacturer's specs, and get a friend to help you measure so you can be sure. To do so, get a soft tape measure. Measure the distance between the pointy vertebrae at the bottom of your neck, and a point on your lower back that's even with your hipbones.

Good luck.

Great tips..... you should practice these adjustments on your girlfriend, spending as much time as possible on the sternum straps.

Adjust a Dana?! Impossible!
Jeffers has tried repeatedly without success. I'm still mean and mouthy, demanding, incorrigible! Shep..... you try busting out them moves on this Dana and you'll wish you hadnta, Big Boy. Rough up? I got your rough up RIIIGHT CHYERE! ;-)
As for sternum straps..... I have solved THAT problem. A handy dandy pocket knife and its gone! ah!
Don't cut that sternum strap off he said. Go to the gear store and ask them for an extender he said. Bah!

The hip belt pads should be centered to the top of the pelvis, Elvis.

The shoulder straps should start down the back a bit and come up and over the shoulders.

Don't tighten the load-lifters or hip stabilizers until everything else is snug or the shoulder straps and hip belt will distort.

If the pack rides too low it can be a real pain in the ass for me, since I have an ass.

I don't know what its like for guys with noassatall.

Adjusting your Dana
I've found some info in the Kama Sutra manual that may be of some help...

Details on the "Reed Position"

Is that where you're having the trouble, with the back and loins?

I have a Terraplane X that is pre-K2. Great pack for winter and it is bombproof, but I like my Osprey Aether 60 for 3 season 3 or 4 day trips. Then again the Arctryx Bora 65 is a great bag, just heavier than the Aether 60, yet also bombproof.

"... at an angle enabling good penetration. She then stays relatively passive, but is very lively because the contact is very tight. Few caresses are possible, but the man can sense Dana's excitement and the effects that she feels".

Yes, I see a few more areas where your adjustment may be askew...
