Can any of you give me a source for buying dehydrated eggs in bulk?

Why don't you just vomit into a food dehydrator and use that?

j/k, sort of....

Seriously, I can't stomach dehydrated eggs - they're just gross.

You might check Enertia (trailfoods.com I think) - they have lots of bulk food items....

Did a quick search, here's a source. Don't know anything about them.

Also picked up a good size packet of eggs at REI. I think the local supermarket has them too.

Speaking of, my grandfather loves powdered eggs. My opinion is the same as Bowlder's.

Just the whites, just the yolks, or whole eggs....

What I have been taught, is that anything dehydrated needs to be used up shortly after package has been opened and exposed to air. I have wanted to try to do them myself, butt cant find the time sooooo I would be interested in a source. Mountain house sell them in a gallon can but again needs to be used in a weeks time. You on an egg diet? LOL

If you buy bulk, you just have to reseal in something like Tupperware or Foodsaver.

The enertia eggs are just one meal, called Siera scramble or something. The prep process seems a bit difficult, you have to boil the pouch. I have a pack I got in a sample case but haven't been brave enough to try them yet. Chances are pretty good I won't want to go to pouch boiling trouble on the trail so maybe I'll have them for breakfast tomorrow morning and give you all a review.

I like to create my own meals, but don't like to dehydrate my own stuff. (i'm not making meals like chili anyway) I bought a bunch of stuff in bulk from noah's pantry, barry foods, and nitropak. They had the best prices for the stuff I wanted. If you order from noah's pantry, don't order over the internet cause the shipping doesn't come out right.

I have a Foodsaver, so as I open the cans I re-store in the foodsaver bags and cannisters. The cannisters are expensive, so I buy one evey now and then. I get them at Super Wal-Mart.

anyway, noah's pantry has eggs in bulk.

Father Goose ordered us some from somewhere and they are pretty good as powdered eggs go. It was a good size package but we keep the extra sealed in the freezer and it does not seem to have affected them. I will ask him where he got them when he gets here at about 1:00

Sigh!
Powdered eggs, tinned sausages, bannock in the frying pan over the fire. Canoe upside-down and the paddles in the tent to protect them from the porcupines. Pack basket and Duluth pack and a Hudson's Bay Axe. The smell of wool pants and underpants and shirt and jacket steaming near the fire.

I guess some parts of my childhood were pretty damned good.

Hey Gremlin,
Funny you should post that. I asked the question on behalf of my dad who is an avid canoer/kayaker. He spends lots of time on the water in northern Minnesota and Ontario. He's looking for an alternative to packing in eggs for the long trips.

Miss Twigeater sent me an email and informed me I had better look and report on each and every link or else!
I think she was about to go into bunnie boiler mode.

So here is my report:

Noah's Pantry - You got a bomb shelter in your backyard?

Gilroy foods - We're sorry, but the document you requested is not available at this time

gillco - If you are not a registered user of our eBusiness site and would like to become one, proceed to our Login Request Form to request a username and password.

cachelake - Now this one might have some good stuff.

mountainhouse - Good one.

nitro pak - Survival Food Tabs (Tablets), Yum!! ;-)

LOL...I included some addresses I had but didn't use...

really, if you look up survival stuff, there's some good tips for backpacking!

vicsaw - I don't use the powdered egg stuff, but I do like the mountain house egg meals, although I doctor them up some (cheese, real bacon bits, onions, veggies). I found the #10 can of eggs, ham and peppers to be loaded with ham chunks. After I opened the can I covered it with press 'n seal wrap and put the cover back on. I haven't died yet.

I wouldn't boil up the easter bunny, stovie! :)

I have tryed the MH eggs with bacon bits, and the ham & peppers.
Pretty dang good. High dollar though.

twigeater's souped up versions sound great!

Vic,
One tip for eggs is to rub them in vaseline and put them in a plastic container. The vaseline prevents oxygen from getting in and rotting the eggs. I've done it for about a week then turned to powdered eggs. They make you fart, though.

hey vicsaw, where does your dad do his canoeing at? I'm here in ely right on the edge of the boundary waters and have done many canoe trips out there.

gremlin's account of a canoe trip sounds quite familiar, we never did worry about porcupines though, only black bears... one time polar bears...

pricey is right SS, but bulk makes them cheaper...

one serving on the Mountain House site is $4.49, I can get it at super WM for $3.25, or the can comes out to $1.83 per serving (not including shipping).

Simer,

I know I've heard him mention Ely often. Not sure where he goes in that neighborhood. He has gone to the Boundary Waters but it's too crowded there for him. He goes also to Quetico and Woodland Caribou Park. And then there are places nearer to his house like Maplewood State Park. A few years ago he went kayaking off the coast of Alaska with the humpbacks.

When the water is frozen, he likes to go winter camping. The further below zero the better.
