“I spent the latter part of my childhood in the mountains of NE Tennessee. Kingsport is right on the TN/VA line so every so often a couple of Virginians not bright enough to figure out how to stand on two feet like a good biped would fall from the mountains and land in Kingsport. My mother had to have open heart surgery and to repair a hole in her heart and so we were waiting anxiously in the waiting room while my mother was under the knife. I was sitting beside my grandmother who began conversing with another elderly lady from Virginia in the waiting room who was waiting on her sister's heart surgery. Well somehow the conversation steered itself to where my grandmother was from, and she mentioned her hometown and how she went to school with Jim Neighbors, i.e. Gomer Pyle. Well this lady about had a fit, in her own words "She had never met anyone who met an honest to goodness movie star before". Her whole family gathered around my grandmother and started talking about how much they loved Jim Neighbors and his great body of work. I silently slid out of my seat and left my grandmother to deal with the Virginians on her own. She ended up signing an autograph for one of them.*
