If you have a lot of large pictures on your site, you'll need lots of bandwidth. Hosting companies measure how much data is transferred from your site per hour and cut you off if you exceed what you are paying for.” 2:02:13 PM 6/28/04 “so bandwidth = visitors X how big files / time.” 2:05:03 PM 6/28/04 “Bandwidth is the amount of data delivered during a given amount of time. The cheap program you linked to has about 50GB/month, if I read the graph properly. So if each visit to your site requires 1MB to be served to the viewer, then about 50,000 people a month can visit your site. Of course, that number goes down if you're doing other data traffic, like FTP and email. Speed doesn't really increase with more bandwidth, as long as you have a datapipe fat enough to take the maximum rate of data that the computer can serve. Plus, if your visitor is on a 52KB dialup line, you can have the fattest pipe in the world and it's still gonna take forever for your page to be loaded to him.” 2:07:04 PM 6/28/04 “thanks much for the input bit $ TNT” 2:13:46 PM 6/28/04 “Saw this thread too late. I concur with bitpusher and techntrek. If your pages sit on a host site, yes, you want those pages to have a static (one that doesn't change) IP address. You don't want to have to wait until your domain resolves. On your home computer, you probably have a dynamic (one that can change) IP address. Techntrek is correct about it rarely changing, especially if you connect before your lease is up. Even if you connect after your lease is up, your computer still requests the same IP address from the DHCP server. If nobody else has since leased your old address, you continue to get your old IP address for another entire lease period. It's more common to maintain the same IP address once a lease expires in a corporate environment than it is in an ISP where many more computers might connect. It all depends on the IP scope(s) of the DHCP server(s). Nevermind...I've gone into *way* too much detail.” 3:01:01 PM 6/28/04 “How can I reset the Windows Media Player as the default player for mp3 music. Usually, when I use a program that plays mp3 music, it resets all my mp3 music to recognize itself as the default player.” 6:47:54 PM 7/07/04 “reset” 6:48:46 PM 7/07/04 “Open a folder and hit the 'tools' menu, click 'folder options' then the 'file types' tab. Select MP3 and you will be able to choose the program it opens with” 6:55:47 PM 7/07/04 “Thanks. However, mp3 does not appear in the list. I'll have to play with it later since right now I have to leave for class__2 hours of slamming people on the mat.” 7:15:33 PM 7/07/04 “Ya wouldn't wanna meet NS in a dark alleyway... nosireebobtailcat.” 7:20:24 PM 7/07/04 “That's strange, but if MP3 doesn't appear on the list, you can always add it by clicking the New button in that dialog box.” 7:27:42 PM 7/07/04 “You could click 'New' and add the .mp3 extention. Or, in Media Player click 'tools' then 'options' then the 'file types' tab and check the mp3 box there. If you use a different player on ocassion, it may want to steal the file association. Check the options for that player and see if you can ask it not to do that any more” 7:35:17 PM 7/07/04 Hodgeman of BC “OK, with your help and by going into Windows Media, I was able to change all the music file types from Winamp to mp3 and can now easily play them with the Windows Media Player, the new default player for the songs. However, the file folders that hold groups of songs did not change, so when a folder is selected, it appears that the songs will go to the Winamp Player (which will probably change everything back). I have several other players. I like the one that came with Napster years ago. However, I found that it did not like something about some of the selections and would refuse to play them, while other players could play them just fine. Also, I threw out many numbers as incomplete, before discovering that other players were able to play them to completion. I found that Winamp appeared to be collecting too much information, which it would send out while the computer would be shutting down. Sometimes, after a long session it seemed to take forever to shut down. So I prefer to use other players. Also, I currently disconnect my cable connection just before shutting down the computer. Thanks for your help.” 10:42:31 PM 7/07/04 “Sounds like you got that somewhat sorted out at least, nowslimmer. Those darn media players are the worst for just associating everything they possibly can with their own player. At least some will ask you first during install, or give the option to not do it automatically” 2:32:07 AM 7/08/04 “You're right. Winamp grabbed everything again during shutdown or startup, but I was again able to do the reset after the startup this morning. I would remove Winamp, but I have found it useful at times. I have music playing on the computer most of the time, either my stuff or a radio station like: WEB RADIO Classical Music: All Day, All Night http://www.nytimes.com/ref/wqxr/WQXR-SPLASH.html” 6:55:12 AM 7/08/04 “I've used Winamp a long time ago, but don't have it installed right now. It probably re-associated when you ran it. Did you check to see if there's an 'options' or 'preferences' on Winamp where you can get it to stop setting itself as the default player automatically?” 10:11:33 AM 7/08/04 “On startup I'm getting Run DLL as an app has encountered a problem and needs to close The computer seems to run just fine otherwise. I'm behind firewalls and have Norton. I've run virus and spyware scans and it still comes up. How do I stop it?” 5:32:04 AM 8/03/06 “ ”6:14:03 AM 8/03/06 6:45:41 AM 8/03/06 “Thanks bit. I'll have to wait till I get home to try that fix but that ATI card has caused problems more than once.” 8:33:18 AM 8/03/06 8:48:46 AM 8/03/06 “yw” 5:45:45 PM 8/03/06 “Thanks again bit - problem solved. Great site lumberzac!” 9:38:03 AM 8/05/06 “kewl...glad to help.” 2:17:48 PM 8/05/06 “I have a windows security message stating "Symantec antivirus reports that it is installed but its status is unknown". The Symantec website suggested I run LiveUpdate and restart, which I did until it reported all updates current. The message still appeared after I turned on the computer. I tried to run LiveUpdat again but it said everything was good. Any ideas?” 2:13:39 AM 8/06/06 Problem “In TT, when I select a string to read, it sometimes comes-up on the current page. At other times it starts on a new or different page. Why? Is there a setting somewhere that can be set for starting in the same or a new page? Or is it just Matt's choice? I am usually using Netscape. I am aware that target="_blank" will select a new page. But I'm getting different results for the strings. Perhaps it depends upon which advertisements Matt is inserting. Thanks.” 6:16:10 AM 8/06/06 “Bearmagnet, Windows XP SP2 keeps track of your antivirus software. Go to the Control Panel, and open up "Security". Under "Virus Protection" you can tell XP to not monitor your antivirus software, and the message should go away. nowslimmer, when you select a thread from the main TT page, it should always open in the same page. But if you select a thread from a link that someone has embedded in a message, it will probably open in a new page. At least, that's the behavior I've noticed with Internet Explorer. I haven't used Netscape in a long time.” 7:52:27 AM 8/06/06 “bitpusher - Thanks. You are most likely correct. I'll have to monitor it more closely. I do have a related problem. I have a short-cut icon which will start-up TT. But, when there is an active Netscape page, it will jump on top of it. Otherwise, it starts it's own page. I would like it to always start a new page.” 8:04:02 AM 8/06/06 “There is probably a setting in Netscape's preferences somewhere that controls that, but I'm not familiar enough with Netscape to tell you where that might be.” 9:38:15 AM 8/06/06 “My pop up window blocker (whatever the hell that is) even blocks the popups that I'd like to see (those in short right field for instance). How do I dismantle my popup blocker? Huh?” 11:56:10 AM 8/06/06 “you can tell XP to not monitor your antivirus software, and the message should go away. I saw that option before but thought it might be a bad idea?” 1:21:02 PM 8/06/06 “bear, don't sweat it. As long as your virus software is still updating regularly and operating, you're okay. You got along for years without Windows checking it for you, right? Nimblefoot, if you're using the automatic pop-up blocker in IE, then when a pop-up gets blocked, there is either a band at the top of the window, or a little icon down in the status bar that you can click to access your pop-up blocker preferences. You can disable it there.” 2:11:46 PM 8/06/06 “I never know anything, bit. I wasn't sure if windows checking it was a new thang or it had been checking it all along and something suddenly blocked/prevented it. And its Dani's work Computer, tied to their network so I get a little skitish when something like that happens. Thanks for your help.” 2:33:38 PM 8/06/06 “Thanks, Bit. You bailed me out once again. I think I'll send you some grits:)” 3:02:13 PM 8/06/06 “Symantec Antivirus programs don't always report their presence correctly to Windows XP SP2, so the result is that you get this warning. The best thing you can do is turn off the monitoring in the Windows Security console of the Control Panel, and maunally make sure your antivirus software is up to date. For Symantec AV stuff, their Live Update program lets you schedule updates to download and install automatically and it works pretty well and transparently (meaning that you don't always need to think about updating it all the time). :)” 5:35:51 PM 8/06/06 “OK. How often should I schedule updates? i needed to download two updates when this problem first started. Is it possible my computer is infected?” 7:06:20 PM 8/06/06 “Hang on, this is Dani's work computer, right? Sometimes places schedule when they want to down load the updates instead of making it automatic. Maybe you need to talk to one of her IT guys at her work. It is probably OK to set Symantec to do automatic updates though. I use AVG and it checks every morning at 9:30, or when I turn on the computer.” 7:14:49 PM 8/06/06 “Well, they have a contract IT guy who comes in on Monday. Her computer at work seems to get updated but the one at home doesn't. For instance, she just notice Outlook has some new updates on her office computer but not the home computer. We do go through the work Network..........I think. At least it's our address...?” 11:03:12 AM 8/07/06 “I do Norton Internet Security and I set it for Automatic updates and it's fine. I just renewed my sub over the internet so it acted funny for a while till I restarted the comp a couple times to clear out the bugs. Now all is well.....” 11:32:05 AM 8/07/06 “Hi. lost the internet. Not sure why I have it back. Can someone answer a few questions? We were getting a "connectivity issue" alert, preventing internet access through our high speed "Local Area Connection". When I tried to shut down a program called "Hiddenfaxwindow" wouldn't stop runnuing no matter what so I had to hit the power button. I was able to reconnect to the internet by manually creating a new connection. It's categorized as a "Broadband" connection. The internet light on our modem has remained off. On Thursday we discontinued our Land Line service through Verizon. We were assured there would be no issues with our DSL/USB connection. Saturday was the first day of "connectivity" issues. I was able to fix it just by turning the modem on and off. That didn't work today. Nor did resetting the modem. Anyone know what that program is? Why is my connection "different"? Why is the internet light to the modem still off? Besides maybe a bulb malfunction. Did disconnecting the Land Line have anything to do with this? Anyone what to explain what I did? I kind of winged it Anyone wanna tell me why I think Verizon might suck ass? Thanks. last edited: 8/20/06 8:57:21 PM” 8:56:42 PM 8/20/06 “Framing hammer” 8:57:49 PM 8/20/06 “Bring it to my nearest Verizon center?” 9:05:40 PM 8/20/06 “I have a cable modem hooked up to a Router that feeds my two computers. When I power it up after disconnecting it for any reason it requires a certain start up order. Everything off and unplugged. Connect the Router cables and other connections. Power up the Cable modem first, Wait till it connects. Power up the Router. Turn on the computer. It wont work unless I follow this sequence. Perhaps your set up is similar? If not, try the framing hammer. Or....call your ISP.” 9:36:18 PM 8/20/06 “My problem is that my volume is maxed out on the computer, but I have to hold a speaker to my ear to hear anything. What gives??” 9:55:29 PM 8/20/06 “Call Verizon? Last and only time we did that we spent hours on the phone with them. In the end they sent us a new DSL Cable. That wasn't the problem.” 10:06:18 PM 8/20/06 “I'm really getting bent. I've tried troubleshooting on the computer. No love. Please help. I have 4 speakers and a subwoofer. It usually sounds great. I recently deleted Kazaa. Do y'all think that had anything to do with it?” 10:15:38 PM 8/20/06 Big Fat Bump “My problem is that my volume is maxed out on the computer, but I have to hold a speaker to my ear to hear anything. My power amp was in my subwolfer. last edited: 8/22/06 4:01:39 PM” 4:00:04 PM 8/22/06
