Anybody ever make a teepee?

I know that I do not need one but those Kifaru tipis are too cool. But the price man what are they made out of Gold?

Anybody ever try to make one? It really couldn't be that hard. You would just sew together like 8 triangles with a door and a roof vent. Then find a pole for it. I would think it would be easier than making a tent.
I think it would be a great family camping tent.

Speaking of thread degeneration...

No, but I did make peepee once when I was a kid.

Did you use teepee to wipe up any spilled peepee?

I think Tarbubble made one and posted a picture of it on the other site last year. I doesn't seem too hard to make one once you figure the angles out.

we had one once back in Scouts, but it was HUGE, I think about 12 of us could sleep in it with our gear. Must have been 15 foot tall at the peak too. We used small trees that we cut for the poles.

Prolly not what your looking for, but it was kinda cool, at the time.

got all excited for a minute there. No I didn't make a teepee. I thought this thread actually got some response.

I think I remeber seeing Tarabulls richb, It can't bee that hard and i think it would make a great shelter.

There was an old Chippewa gentlemen who died last year who used to make teepee's out of birchbark. He also is the first person who ever took me deer hunting. He treated us (my brother and I) like the ignorant rookies we were, teaching us gun safety and how not to get lost (most of the time). This one day when he was particularly full of himself regarding his hunting skills he somehow managed to shoot a hole in the floor of my
Dad's '57 Merc with his unloaded deer rifle. Years later when he told his old hunting stories, this one never seemed to come up. The old people were really special.

I made one for my kids when they were young it was about 8’ tall and 6’ wide. It stood in the yard for a few of years. They had a lot of fun with it.

I did some calculations for one a while back. It was fun knocking the dust off the old trig formulas and whatnot (SOH-CAH-TOA!).

It was pretty big as I recall... more like a party tent for snowstorms, LOL... I was thinking of using 8 poles around the periphery instead of a center pole and having a collapsable woodstove.

Yes I have made tipis. Long in the past. In the long run it's a lot cheaper to buy one, but cut your own poles.

Also make sure you get a liner for it.

Tipi's are the most efficient form of shelter.

You ralize of course that you don't backpack with them ubless of course you have a horse or mule.

Redhawk, I was thinking more of the ultralight tipi that only uses a center pole, not the Indian style with multiple poles and buffalo skin. More like carbon fiber and silnylon.

I think it would be a great shelter, for a group.

I imagine a strip of mesh around the bottom under a flap like the MH waypoint tents, and a peakvent like the Golites. Also a mesh door with door flaps that could be staked out to scoop wind into the tipi.

I thought I saw photos of tarbubble's tipi linked here somewhere. It looked pretty nice.

Most of the teepee's I slept in were semi-permanent in location. Big & spacious although my childhood friend burned up his sleeping bag in one as kids. (open fire in the middle)

Ouch. Umm no fires in my tipi!

I was thinking along these lines
www.kifaru.net but I got to be able to make it cheaper than these.

those are rather pricey, LtHiker. It looks like an odd shaped tarp is all.

Things are always harder than they seem After all, how many years did it take for the tipi to evolve to where it is today?

Impossible. Tees are wooden. They can't pee.

A couple years ago I saw a tipi at a traditional archery gathering in PA that was made by its' owner. This guy made it out of fabric drop clothes that he bought on clearance at K-Mart. Martha Stewart would be proud.

He did a fine job, and the tipi withstood one heck of a thunderstorm that blew in. Most "modern" shelters were either saturated or flattened, but the homemade tipi remained up and dry.

In my previous post change the word clothes into CLOTHS..

Things can be made from drop clothes, but that's a little bit off the topic ;-)

I have made a few Teepee's that were used for Boy scout functions. I still have one that is about 8' wide and about 10' tall. i would not use it for bp, but with a canoe or a large car it would be okay.

Hmmmm.... I remember making one for my kids to camp in out back. Essentially, we tied a bunch of sapplings together near the top, and spread them at the bottom and wrapped black plastic around it. The trick was at the top, to leave a hole for smoke, yet leave a rain flap over it also.

Really, I just remember the fun in making it, not how well it wored or didn't.
