“Ok, so I really want to go on this trip, but I'm running into problems getting the Friday off of work, and Colden is just a tad bit difficult to hike to after dark...

Anywhoo, anybody know of any possible jump-in points for early Saturday morning so that I can recover as much of that hike as possible?”

“Give me some time and I can probably come up with something. I want to wait until Artex finalizes everything first.”

“Hey LZ, how far is Marcy Dam to the Colden campsites (I'm assuming that's where Artex wants to stay)? From the map, it looks like about 4-5 miles with some, but not insane amounts of uphill. It looks closer than Upper Works...”

“PS, 4-5 miles sounds about right, but I have never climbed Marcy form that direction before.”

“Just from memory...I think it took us about two hours to get from Marcy Dam back to COlden Dam on what I think was the Buttkicker I hike. We left Marcy about 5:00 and were in camp at Colden Dam well before dark. That was early September also.

It is a climb but not a bad one.

By the way, I am probably going to make it this year and a new buddy from work is going to try to come also.”

“I may have to bail because of work. Since I'm a teacher, I can't choose my days off, and it's about a seven hour drive for me. However, I'm going to plan another buttkicker in the White Mts. (just 90 minutes away), if anyone is interested.”

“Actually from southern Maine if you cut strait across New Hampshire and Vermont you can probably get to the trailhead in under 6 hours. The ADK High Peaks are actually farther north than Portland.”

“If that's true, then it makes it slightly more doable. However, I'd have to arrive late Friday night and hike out Sunday morning, only leaving one real day for hardcore buttkicking.”

“It's your trip we'll let you make that decision.”

“Nah, I think the trip should be made to accomodate those who want to stay longer, but it's easy enough for me to hike out a day early or whatever. No worries, trail routes can be flexed this way and that to make everyone happy.”

“When I joined you guys last year, mapquest said it was faster for me to drive to Portland and go from there. But the route I took across NH and Vermont was more scenic. I didn't get lost until New York, cause the route designations didn't match the map. Plus there was construction and detours, AND I passed this "shock prison" a few times which kinda freaked me out.

I felt like I was in a foreign country, LOL!”

“Oh, and the longer route that I took was supposed to be 6 hours, but I did that lost thing in NY. :)”

Anywhoo, I was thinking about crashing in my car at the trailhead at Marcy Dam whenever I get up there, then get up at or just before the crack of dawn and high-tail it up over to the Colden campsites to get there in time before everyone takes off for the day's butt-kicking hike...

And now for the million-dollar question: is this acutally realistic, or have I gone off the deep end?”

“By the way folks, for those of you considering going over Indian and Cold Brook (Iroquois) Passes on day 1, be forewarned that the eastbound climb up Cold Brook Pass (out of Scotts Clearing) is ridiculously long and even more ridiculously steep the whole way. Of course, this being a buttkicker, probably no one cares. But, don't say I didn't warn you...”

Move the trip to the Whites if it better suits your schedule. Ped just posted a loop on a White Mts thread that looks awesome.”

“Maybe what I'll do is plan a trip in the Whites around that time. The Adirondack itinerary can stay in place for those who want to attend that trip. It'd just be easier for me that way, since I can't choose my days off.”

I'm thinking this trip is in limbo right now. I suggested to Artex that he move the trip to NH cuz he can't make it to the Dacks. I don't think he has internet access in his new apartment yet so he may not get around to this for a bit.”

the only prob i have now is all this dam rain has put me behind in building my pole barn.

Also, what would the final camp-spot be? I have done 33 peaks but NOTHING in and around Colden, so I'll need someone to provide some details.

“I don't even know if I'm in on this trip as of yet, but the Lake Colden area should be ok. Yeah, it's busy and there's a 110% chance that you will be visited by at least one bear overnight, all the legal campsites in the area have steel cables to help protect your food -- Just don't eat or cook in the leanto...

Lake Colden is at the Heart of the High Peaks and provides easy access to the MacIntyres, Mt Colden, Mt Cliff, and the Southern Greats (Marcy, Gray, Skylight, and Redfield). Lots of peaks to choose from.”

“Canisters are probably the only way. I plan on renting one for this trip. I haven't looked into it fully yet, but I believe the cost is $5 per day to rent a bear canister.”

“The cables work as long as the system is not dependent on any conventional rope near any trees (the bears are smart enough to know that destroying the rope will release the bag). However, a bear is not capable of destroying a steel cable.

I like the system they use along the Kittatinny Ridge in NJ (another area with similar bear problems) -- there's a beam with several hooks on it mounted between two trees, and the bottoms of those two trees are wrapped in aluminum flashing (painted brown for ambiance), thus rendering the trees unclimbable for bears, et al.

It's kinda funny, as you can see the claw marks of many a past bear trying to scale to tree, but to no avail. They only go so high and then nothing...”

“I own a bear canister, and even though it's designed for 2 peopel for 3 days, I barely fit 4 days of food for 1 in it. (so sharing isn't likely an option... we'll just pile the canisters in a pile somewhere away from water)”
