Anywhoo, anybody know of any possible jump-in points for early Saturday morning so that I can recover as much of that hike as possible?” 7:56:15 PM 7/28/04 “Give me some time and I can probably come up with something. I want to wait until Artex finalizes everything first.” 8:36:05 PM 7/28/04 “Hey LZ, how far is Marcy Dam to the Colden campsites (I'm assuming that's where Artex wants to stay)? From the map, it looks like about 4-5 miles with some, but not insane amounts of uphill. It looks closer than Upper Works...” 10:08:21 PM 7/28/04 “PS, 4-5 miles sounds about right, but I have never climbed Marcy form that direction before.” 8:37:54 AM 7/29/04 “Just from memory...I think it took us about two hours to get from Marcy Dam back to COlden Dam on what I think was the Buttkicker I hike. We left Marcy about 5:00 and were in camp at Colden Dam well before dark. That was early September also. It is a climb but not a bad one. By the way, I am probably going to make it this year and a new buddy from work is going to try to come also.” 9:59:41 AM 7/29/04 “I'm a maybe.” 10:31:07 AM 7/29/04 “I may have to bail because of work. Since I'm a teacher, I can't choose my days off, and it's about a seven hour drive for me. However, I'm going to plan another buttkicker in the White Mts. (just 90 minutes away), if anyone is interested.” 6:31:56 PM 7/29/04 “90 minutes to the White Mountains. Bastard” 6:47:32 PM 7/29/04 “Artex, If you let me drive I can get you there if 4hrs.” 6:51:55 PM 7/29/04 “remind me never to drive with LZ” 6:57:49 PM 7/29/04 “Four hours?! Holy crap, that's impossible!” 7:03:10 PM 7/29/04 “Actually from southern Maine if you cut strait across New Hampshire and Vermont you can probably get to the trailhead in under 6 hours. The ADK High Peaks are actually farther north than Portland.” 7:05:33 PM 7/29/04 “If that's true, then it makes it slightly more doable. However, I'd have to arrive late Friday night and hike out Sunday morning, only leaving one real day for hardcore buttkicking.” 7:39:22 PM 7/29/04 “It's your trip we'll let you make that decision.” 7:42:04 PM 7/29/04 “Nah, I think the trip should be made to accomodate those who want to stay longer, but it's easy enough for me to hike out a day early or whatever. No worries, trail routes can be flexed this way and that to make everyone happy.” 8:16:18 PM 7/29/04 “When I joined you guys last year, mapquest said it was faster for me to drive to Portland and go from there. But the route I took across NH and Vermont was more scenic. I didn't get lost until New York, cause the route designations didn't match the map. Plus there was construction and detours, AND I passed this "shock prison" a few times which kinda freaked me out. I felt like I was in a foreign country, LOL!” 8:49:55 PM 7/29/04 “Oh, and the longer route that I took was supposed to be 6 hours, but I did that lost thing in NY. :)” 8:51:28 PM 7/29/04 “Twigeater did you come through Comstock, NY?” 8:55:57 PM 7/29/04 “beats me... :) I'm over 40, I don't remember yesterday, never mind a year ago.” 9:02:26 PM 7/29/04 “I'm with Artex on this one -- I won't be able to get up there until late Friday night, as in after dark. Anywhoo, I was thinking about crashing in my car at the trailhead at Marcy Dam whenever I get up there, then get up at or just before the crack of dawn and high-tail it up over to the Colden campsites to get there in time before everyone takes off for the day's butt-kicking hike... And now for the million-dollar question: is this acutally realistic, or have I gone off the deep end?” 9:59:59 PM 7/29/04 “By the way folks, for those of you considering going over Indian and Cold Brook (Iroquois) Passes on day 1, be forewarned that the eastbound climb up Cold Brook Pass (out of Scotts Clearing) is ridiculously long and even more ridiculously steep the whole way. Of course, this being a buttkicker, probably no one cares. But, don't say I didn't warn you...” 10:04:10 PM 7/29/04 “Yo Artex - The BUTTKICKER is your trip. FYAO is AmyG's trip and I couldn't imagine an FYAO without her, just like I couldn't imagine a BUTTKICKER without you. Move the trip to the Whites if it better suits your schedule. Ped just posted a loop on a White Mts thread that looks awesome.” 6:40:05 PM 7/30/04 “Maybe what I'll do is plan a trip in the Whites around that time. The Adirondack itinerary can stay in place for those who want to attend that trip. It'd just be easier for me that way, since I can't choose my days off.” 8:50:03 PM 7/30/04 “Funny, I was thinking that it couldn't be the BUTTLICKER without him. But then again It couldn't be the FYAO without the looming presence of the Zippertex either!! J/K we love ya Mr. Artex” 8:13:12 AM 7/31/04 “"...since I can't choose my days off." Artex I think it's high time you start looking for a new job.” 1:30:51 PM 7/31/04 “LOL!” 1:39:45 PM 7/31/04 “So, um...what is the status of this trip? Is it cancelled, or who is in, who is out? As for me...I'd like to still do this trip if I can (about 90% likely) and would also love to do a Whites trip in October, but I will have to plan around a work schedule.” 4:08:38 PM 8/10/04 “So, um...what is the status of this trip? Other times, repetition is a sign of advancing dementia. :-)” 4:14:08 PM 8/10/04 “Ummmm, in your case Fritz, I'd say it's the dementia thing. heh heh. I'm thinking this trip is in limbo right now. I suggested to Artex that he move the trip to NH cuz he can't make it to the Dacks. I don't think he has internet access in his new apartment yet so he may not get around to this for a bit.” 4:35:42 PM 8/10/04 “Thanks Pennsy, I did see that exchange, that is why I am asking...” 5:02:50 PM 8/10/04 “hey fritz i'd still like to go. the whites are a little far for me to drive for a 3 day trip. the only prob i have now is all this dam rain has put me behind in building my pole barn. if i can finish it in the next month (depends on weather)than i'll go.” 5:12:42 PM 8/10/04 “I'm still in on this trip.” 9:30:40 PM 8/10/04 “I'm still in as well, and I even managed to get off that Friday so I can sneak up early Friday AM and hike Marshall... Anyone want to "adopt" this trip since the originator is no longer able to attend? Also, what would the final camp-spot be? I have done 33 peaks but NOTHING in and around Colden, so I'll need someone to provide some details. Looking forward to this trip!” 12:05:44 PM 8/18/04 “I don't even know if I'm in on this trip as of yet, but the Lake Colden area should be ok. Yeah, it's busy and there's a 110% chance that you will be visited by at least one bear overnight, all the legal campsites in the area have steel cables to help protect your food -- Just don't eat or cook in the leanto... Lake Colden is at the Heart of the High Peaks and provides easy access to the MacIntyres, Mt Colden, Mt Cliff, and the Southern Greats (Marcy, Gray, Skylight, and Redfield). Lots of peaks to choose from.” 7:53:48 PM 8/18/04 “If there is a volunteer who can take over this trip, I'd appreciate it. However, the "Buttkicker" term is trademarked, so it'll have to be called something else. :-) I'm going to organize a buttkicker in the Whites, for reasons stated previously. I sincerely apologize for any confusion or whatever on my part.” 10:18:55 AM 8/19/04 “I already know sacco and lumberzac from adkforum.com Maybe we'll just move the trip planning there. Buttkicker is trademarked???? lol” 11:42:06 AM 8/19/04 “Artex, when are you thinking of doing that whites trip? Is there a thread?” 12:07:30 PM 8/19/04 “I haven't created it yet. Pepsi suggested a route for it. Honestly, it could take me a while. I'll be crazed with the school year starting these next few weeks.” 12:34:17 PM 8/19/04 Hey Artex... “...shouldn't that be Buttkicker® ?” 11:22:58 PM 8/19/04 “is it just "Adirondack Buttkicker" that is trademarked or is it "buttkicker" that is trademarked?” 11:28:25 PM 8/19/04 “Buttkicker is trademarked. But if you give me an enertia meal, I may lend said name to you.” 8:54:48 AM 8/20/04 “the Black Mountain fall backpack crosses the the Big Butt Peaks, it seems so obvious to call it the Black Mountain and the Big Buttkicker trip. lol That's worth an enertia meal. Artex, you should try to make that trip, you'll enjoy it.” 9:54:15 PM 8/20/04 Hey Artex!! “If it's allowed (I don't want to infringe on any copy write laws)I would like to take over the trip for you. I believe you can change the trip leaders name to myself.” 3:51:44 PM 8/23/04 FYI “I just wanted to let you all know that "boy everest" is not a troll. He is a very sweet and young friend of my son. He has the heart and soul of a true backpacker. some of you met him in Ithaca. truly a very cool kid. But this trip is way over his head. I am sure you will have him on future trips. So look out for him. He may very well blow right past some of you backpackers on the trial and leave you in the dust!” 11:09:53 AM 8/24/04 zac “1] what's the bear cablesystem status? i've heard that the bears are ou smarting them and i've also hear the problem's been fixed. 2] with [1] in mind, should we be discussing sharing canisters or something?” 3:21:11 PM 8/24/04 zac “1] what's the bear cablesystem status? i've heard that the bears are out smarting them and i've also hear the problem's been fixed. 2] with [1] in mind, should we be discussing sharing canisters or something ahead of time?” 3:21:37 PM 8/24/04 “Canisters are probably the only way. I plan on renting one for this trip. I haven't looked into it fully yet, but I believe the cost is $5 per day to rent a bear canister.” 3:24:06 PM 8/24/04 “The cables work as long as the system is not dependent on any conventional rope near any trees (the bears are smart enough to know that destroying the rope will release the bag). However, a bear is not capable of destroying a steel cable. I like the system they use along the Kittatinny Ridge in NJ (another area with similar bear problems) -- there's a beam with several hooks on it mounted between two trees, and the bottoms of those two trees are wrapped in aluminum flashing (painted brown for ambiance), thus rendering the trees unclimbable for bears, et al. It's kinda funny, as you can see the claw marks of many a past bear trying to scale to tree, but to no avail. They only go so high and then nothing...” 5:41:56 PM 8/24/04 “I own a bear canister, and even though it's designed for 2 peopel for 3 days, I barely fit 4 days of food for 1 in it. (so sharing isn't likely an option... we'll just pile the canisters in a pile somewhere away from water)” 3:44:43 PM 8/25/04 << back to Unofficial Adirondack Buttkicker III page
