whike hiking this weekend, i saw two different kinds of birds. I would love to know what they were.

first one was very small. smaller then a finch. slighty yellow underbellie and green wings.

second one was jet black. much bigger then a finch but it had a yellow (i think it was yellow)streak on its wings.

they both were very cool.

ps, Must Hike if you see this, was the blackbirds streak yellow or red?

THe little ones might be gold finches.

They are tiny and flit about the bushes doing what ever gold finches do.

Rancid had his own system of ornithological classification.
There were three basic groups of birds:little birds, medium sized birds and big birds.A few birds were referred to by their common names:ducks, doves, pheasants and iggles.Rancids system of ornithology worked just as well on identifying rarer birds.

"Whats that bird?" I would ask Rancid.
"Thet thar is what ya calls yer little black-and-white bird with a red head."he would tell me authoritatively.I never ceased to marvel at how Rancid knew all the different kinds of birds.Just by looking at them you could tell he knew what he was talking about.

Maybe its because I hike slow.

Maybe its because of the way my left foot sorta drags.

Maybe it because I stoop a lot,

but I always get 3 or 4 vultures circling around me as I hike.

Why is that ?? (j/k) :^)

It defiantly was no seagull (they don’t screech like this thing did), though you really can't tell with that picture. The bird(s) (there were two of them flying around the summit) looked almost like an Osprey but not quite and they were smaller.

Funny you mention seeing a bald eagle - I just saw one THIS MORNING sitting in a tree along the Cedar River. It was no more than 20 yards from me, just watching the river (and prolly looking for a salmon!)

We are blessed with many
birds in Tennessee. I enjoy
hearing the vocalizations of
the Yellow-billed Cuckoo.
They are pretty birds and not
often seen. I have for several
summers observed a pair of
Orchard Orioles. Their nest
is a delight to find. What a
unique construction!

hawks, mexican jays, steller jays, little song birds that I can't see very well in the brush, woodpeckers, roadrunners. They've released some turkeys in the Sandias, that would be cool to see.
