Ya' know, Lyra, you're going to too much trouble making up this whole newby thread just to tell me that you're after my "aged like fine wine" body. Can't a vintage gentleman post on a backpacking site without the young babes hounding him? Please, leave me alone.

"im expecting the most miserably painful day of my life"

You mean, your first day posting on TT? or the trip itself?

And Lyra...I always knew you had the hots for me. (But I guess if I read the whole thread, all the other old farts here have already said the same thing...)

Good luck jwsowers,

On your first hike, you should go without water, to get a feel for what it's like to be dehydrated. If you do take any liquids, I would recommend Wild Turkey 101.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger!!!

ha thanks for all the help, you werent nearly as brutal as i expected. but yeah im a guy.
and im 23, good guess.
im not too worried about myself, ive done a lot of reading (as if that helps)and im in pretty good shape for it, but im going with 4 other guys that really have no clue what their getting into.
i dont know if this is a huge mistake or not but i was only going in with a daypack, i wanted to keep the load light. water/food and sleeping bag mainly.
but ill wait for replies before saying more. i dont want to embarass myself too much at once.

Hey, you will have a great time. Just be sure to be careful with sharp objects, don't get lost, and enjoy every moment by being aware of sights, sounds, smells, and tastes. Write a trip diary either during or right after your trip.

At this time of the year, I'd be more apt to bring along a lighter, more whimsical - yet bold, blue-green acid. This is the wrong time of the year for the brown acid.

What Dunadan said and take lots of pictures.
lumberzac

Others may disagree, but I wouldn't go with just a daypack for your first overnighter - unless you trust the others in your group to provide shelters and cookware and such. If they truly don't know what they're getting into, you might want to consider their inexperience when you select your gear.

A lot of us can be considering lightweights or minimalists, but I know I didn't start that way. In fair weather on solo trips, I can now take just what you describe, but if its not a solo run and the weather might be bad, I'll take a tent or tarp.

besides the 'dont run with scissors' advice, which is a ton of help i gotta say, what can you tell me about shoes? i dont want to come back with an infectious bloody mess where my feet used to be.

In case this does happen make sure you have easily accessible dull pocket knife....Dont ask!

Before we get to the shoes, perhaps we should get alittle more in depth about having a pair of scissors, because if a boulder does roll on top of your arm, you'll need those scissors to cut yourself free....
Capn Bobo

Capn....
I thought it was a dull knife? Was it scissors? Maybe you should forget the daypack and just bring a chain saw in case the boulder falls on your arm!
I love the "Scareface" shower scene!

Hey, despite what everyone here will tell you, I have actually backpacked. Not only that, I remember the daredevil stunts that I pulled while in my twenties. I strongly advise against being stupid, but being male and 23, you might not be able to help yourself. Have fun.
