Second, about your boots. Make sure they are broken in first. Do not wear your brand new boots on the trail at first. Also, stop and take care of any 'hotspots' right away, with moleskin or duct tape. Have a change of shoes for camp (even slippers).

“My advice for Buckskin Gulch is make sure that you check your pack. I found a stuffed sleeping bag there that obviously fell off someone's pack that got pulled off by the rubbing along tight walls.”

“That's a good point, USA. Several years ago during a trip in Shenandoah NP a friend's bag was snagged off of his pack by a branch during a bushwack - it was strapped on with two compression straps. Didn't discover it until a mile or two later, just as it was getting dark - too late to search all over the place by flashlight. Found it the next day, but after an unhappy night.

Moral of the story is make sure everything on your pack has a "positive lock". In other words, there is a strap or rope or string that somehow keeps the item attached to your pack no matter what. Its fine to strap your sleeping bag on with compression straps if that works, but also take the closure string and tie it to the pack for the positive lock. If the bag comes loose, you won't loose it and will also probably notice it dangling behind your knees.”
