Much as I hate to do this...
I just wandered across this tent, which really would seem to fit the bill of something I've been looking for... lotsa mesh, a full rainfly, under 4 pounds, free-standing, hopefully tall enough to sit up without hitting the top. Price looks right, too.

Bad news>> It's an ALPS!!!

LOL!

i don't get the alps reference, but look at the eurika mountain pass1XT. it's cool cuz the door is on the side , not the end, so you don't have to scooch your way out when you have a horrible hangover....not that i'd know about that, heh heh. bucky fits in the vestibule, with my gear on the other side...affordable too.

ALPS reference due to min(i)ster creek/Oskar etc. Actually that's how I came across the tent. He had posted a link to the ALPS website somewhere.

I've also heard the new Cabela's XPG is interesing. I've got their backpacking catalog... but not right here, right now. lol

Lizs,

I recently got this tent Mountain Hardware PCT and absolutely love it. It's light, small yet still quite roomie, easy to put up, cute, mesh in all the right places, sturdy....what more can I say? I found it on sale at Campmor.

You should check it out.

I'm going to use a quote from Scorchfire

"Just because I backpack doesn't mean I have to stop being a girl"

Tents can be "cute" :)

I still haven't seen one in this category the is worth the expense to replace my Clip Flashlight CD. It fits. It is more a 1.5 person tent than a 2.

is it cute? 'cause if it's not you might as well be a seminole

That Alps 1-person says it's 44 inches across. Isn't that big for width? (or maybe not and I'm dreaming)

Twinks, how much was your tent?

Wonder what material they use for the poles on that Alps tent?

Buddur, that thing looks like a giant sail.

44 inches sounds about right, my solo tent is about that at its widest point, but it tapers to be really narrow at the feet.

I second the vote for the Eureka! Mountain Pass 1XT. 3ft x 8ft, great double vestibule, and huge door with a cool little plastic window. If this wasn't a macho man's tent, you might get away with saying the little plastic window was... "cute".

lizs, i have a mhw pct 1 also that i used at ocala and i found it very roomy and had no problems with the rain. there's one vestibule to the left and this small one on the right. it has just a bottom zipper and is large enough for your boots or water bottles.

But... can you say "freestanding??"

nope, not with MHW. I like freestanding... am not a convert to NON freestanding yet.

That Alps tent is $99... and, did I mention...

freestanding! hehehee

lizs, take Stovestomper's advice and look at the options at Henry Shire's site. They fit all your requirements (except freestanding), and the Squall is about 1.75 lbs total with a built-in floor. Just got mine last week.

Oh, and no, SS didn't actually advise you, but he talked me into it and I am passing the advice on to you...

lizs: I think there was a review of the XPG on backpacker.com a while ago. Of course they loved it, as they do with almost everything they review.

As for ALPS, I shied away from mentioning this before b/c of the minster creek connotations, but a friend of mine has an ALPS bag that he likes. I've not investigated if he's actually Oskar. :)

I dunno... the tent just seems to have a lot of things I've been looking for.

Mebbee Oskar/min(i)stercreek/BM could tell me how to become a pro tester. HEY! I write an adventure/travel column weekly, don't I???!?? hmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... I've got an idea!

Didn't mean to sound like I was knocking the XPG, just backpacker's reviews are sometimes too positive, ya know? It looks like a good 4 pound-ish tent.

I meant the stupid Alps sounds good... and the XPG ain't bad either, backpacker mag or not.

I should forward you info I just got back from Mark Twain Lake. This ACOE woman wants to use photos of either Stikmon's or mine for a display she takes around. LOL!

It sounds like a great place to backpack. She is sending me the map in the mail. I think that trail would work WELL.

Don't trust weights given by an outfit like ALPS.
Your tent is likely to weigh much more than 4 pounds.
For that much weight, you could carry a two person tent, like a SD Clip Flashlight.

If you are limiting yourself to free standing, you are ignoring a whole lot of cheaper, well made tents.

Think out of the box!

Those newspaper folks are sooooooooooooo conservative and closeminded..... ;-)

Hey lizsbaby! Remember those Ktel hoop tents they used to sell on TV? Just throw them up in the air and they unfold and are set up when they hit the ground! Just what you are asking for! ;-)
