Snakeheads In Maryland
In Wheaton, the snakehead resurfaces
2 years after 'Frankenfish' were killed off in Crofton, predator is landed in Md.

A Montgomery County fisherman has bagged a northern snakehead, the same voracious, fin-walking Asian predator that made national news when it took over three Crofton ponds in the summer of 2002.

Terry Wintermoyer plucked the nasty customer from Wheaton Regional Park's Pine Lake on Monday afternoon, prompting officials to close the lake to fishing and to make plans to drain it as quickly as possible. The lake's bass and sunfish, numbering in the hundreds, will be pumped out and shipped to other ponds.

The 19-inch snakehead that Wintermoyer caught lived up to the aggressive reputation of its species: as it lay covered in plastic wrap shortly after Wintermoyer landed it, the snakehead bit into the steel-tipped boot of a passer-by.

Besides devouring other fish in their environment, snakeheads are known for surviving out of water for long periods and moving on land with their fins.

At a lakeside news conference yesterday, Wintermoyer, 23, said he immediately knew he had something special. He used pliers to extract the hook from the snakehead's mouth - thus avoiding its fang-like teeth - and admired his catch for an hour before turning it in to park police.

"I hadn't seen anything like that my whole life," he said.

Yeah, saw that on CNN. Sigh, here we go again, lets ruin another pond/lake. Kind of like burning the whole forest just because one animal is rabbid.

There is no natural predator for these fish. The drainage of this pond will help prevent these fish from destroying many others. When looking at the big picture, the destruction of this pond will save many others.

BTW I have seen the use of chemicals in local lakes by DEC that kill all of the fish in the water as a way to combat an over population bait fish. In the course of five years the pond supports a healthy fish population.

yeah, they've gotto get rid of it, as invasive species go this is a nasty one. And it can move from lake to lake.

Nigal, its chatter, no?

Two years ago in another Maryland pond a dude caught a 26" snakehead!

According to the article the other fish will be moved to other ponds when this one is drained.

No fish, except for the nasty one, will be harmed in this operation.

"Besides devouring other fish in their environment, snakeheads are known for surviving out of water for long periods and moving on land with their fins."

Didn't humans get out of the water a few million years ago? Maybe these evil fishies are just trying to get to another level in their evolution process.

Kill them all....we don't need competition!!!! :o)

...then there won't be any fishies left...except for snakeheads. I read somewhere, the snakeheads eat everything....something like 3 or 4 times their body weight, if I'm not mistaken. YIKES.

The pond was drained and that was the only one. They are now going to do DNA tests to see if it is related to the ones they found in the other pond last year.

Two years ago(??) during the earlier snakehead episode a Baltimore area restaurant bought some snakeheads from a Chinese market in New York and served it as a specialty/gag item.

I hope nobody gagged.
