Has anyone tried it? I've heard the material is easily snagged. Any pros/cons?

Sloppy Joe just bought one. Didn't get to use it on the Mammoth Flood Trip though.

hey embear, that material the Z pack is made of though, I heard it kinda "seals" itself together even after it gets holes in it. Like if you poke a pencil in it, it kind of squishes back together.

I think you guys are getting the Z-pack and the G-pack confused again. The G-pack is silnylon, the z is derema with kevlar.

The Z is much more durable than the G I had the G and returned it after 2 hikes. So far i like the Z although I haven't really given it a fair test. The Catskills next weekend will be the first real test.

Yah but you can't share it with others if you bring it in that way, embear.

Well, I guess you could, but that would be reallly grooooosssss...

LtHiker--you're right, I was thinking it was silnylon....OOPS!

Lthiker is right on the 2 packs. The material on the G pack is totally cool! I tried it out at a store a few weeks ago. It was not on the actual pack, just a sample sent to the vendor. He lat me punch a pen through the material a few times. After you rub the area with the hole (That sounded sick!) it re-seals itself.

My only worry is if a real big tear or hole opened. The material is very thin and a big gash might not seal as well.

I think it is safe to say anything by Gregory rocks. I love my Palisade pack.

Yeah, I've also got a Palisade, but I'm looking for something a little more lightweight. Is the Z pack much lighter/smaller, or am I getting it confused with the G pack again?

The Z is a little heavier than the G. I think it is also a little bigger.

the Z is heavier and more durable than the G, but it's still very light. The only complaint I have about the Z at all is that it could use a little more padding in the hipbelt. Other than that IMO it is the perfect overnighter/weekender pack.

I'm using the Z-pack to start getting my pack weight down. I am currently at about 18lbs with food for a three day weekend. I just didn't quite feel comfortable with a lighter suspension than the Gregory.

I almost bought the Z a couple weeks ago, it's a great looking pack in many respects but I opted for the Granite Gear Vapor Trail for a couple reasons. One was the reviews I'd read about the hipbelt padding vs. many other lite or ultralite packs. Now that I have it I have to say I'm glad I chose this over the Z. The Z was my # 2 pack after LOTS of looking around!

I just got a Z a couple weeks ago, too, although I won't be able to use it for a few weeks at least. I wanted a lighter pack, but one that could handle loads nearing 40 pounds. My typical pack weight for a weekend trip sharing some gear is around 30 or less, but I often take my son, so carry his sleeping bag, the whole tent, etc. So my total weight for a weekend would be too much for a truly ultralight pack. I carried about 30 pounds around REI for 20 minutes or so while I shopped before I bought it, and it felt great. Can't wait to field test it....

I will probably look into buying this pack around Christmas time. Post your reviews! Let me know if it is worth the money.

Bowlderman, I hope everything fits in it for you. the one thing that i do not like about it is that it has no lash points for a pad or a tent. Everything has to go inside.

Well, I've often lashed things to compression straps - it looks like there are enough of those to work OK....

any new opinions on the z? I think i've decided on it but want to check and see if there's anybody who's used it over an extended amount of time. thanks for the help.

My daughter has one. She's only used it on a dayhike and on one 21 mile/2 night trip. The thing I noticed while hiking behind her was that it has a lot of straps hanging down. If mountain lions and wildcats are anything like housecats you are going to look like a playtoy :)

I got one and have used it on 3-day 28 miles. I absolutely loved it no complaints here. A little discussion from another thread: http://www.thebackpacker.com/trailtalk/thread/35591,-1,2.php

I'm going on a winter trip with BowlderSon next week (2 nights). Haven't decided if I'll use the Z or my older larger pack just yet. I won't have to strap skis onto the pack, so I may be able to use the Z - will report later....

I've had my z-pack for about a year now and love it. The only thing I would wish for is a place to strap a pad outside.

The new 2005 G-pack looks promising, alittle smaller and lighter.

Hey LtHiker, I just use a couple of small bungees to strap on a pad. But you're right - it wouldn't seem to add a ton of weight to have a couple of built-in straps or something.

Don't know my torso measurement, but I'm a hair under 6 feet tall and I have the medium - fits perfectly, I love it!
