Those movies are great to crack on while watching.

Its almost as bad as the crap disaster movies from the '70s.

The characters behave soooooo stupidly.

"Gee, I wonder why those coyotes are dead?
Let's go check it out.
Oh $h!t, gas!"

I liked when the whole town disappeared and nobody noticed for a couple of hours.

Then it was "hey, we think we lost a couple of towns".

Actually, Buddur is correct. My understanding is that the Richter scale is a logarithmic scale between 0 and 10 that measures the energy released in a seismic event. I have to read seismic stuff for work, but nothing like a geologist such as Buddur.

Buddur is a geologist? Or a seismologist?

"It's Not My Fault!" Said San Andreas
Not only what dayhiker said, but if I remember correctly the shear strength of the strongest crustal rock when strained could only create an earthquake of magnitude no more than about 9 on the Rictor scale. So a 10.5 is a slight exaggeration.

Maybe the meant the Mercali scale of devastation?

It was pretty lame. I just feel sorry for my brother-in-law who is now on the California island!

The camera work is driving me nuts (and I don't have far to drive) They keep zooming in and out...I would say it looks like a 12 year old behind the camera, but I can;t imagine any 12 year old being that bad.

STOP the artsy crap.

In times of real disasters (such as the whole Middle East), the magnitude of entertainment disaster must expand to seem truly devastating in comparison, thereby comforting the masses that, hey, I guess it could be worse.

Little do they know. By focusing on the brave, and incredibly lucky, survivors, the shows like "10.5" lull viewers into complacency about what a real, truly major earthquake (or al queda (sp?) event will do to real people.

Anybody could have predicted there would be an earthquake in CA this year. That's like saying there's going to be snow in Minesotta.

If the geologist who predicted it (the magnitude) is right, he just got lucky. We are about due for a big one.

Don't Anyone Forget About The Famous Aulacogen

Lucky me, I live just north of the northern boundary of the 1895 quake.

Reino was telling me, as we laughed at "10.5" for a moment, that she went through an earthquake in Ann Arbor back in the 80s.

We recorded the movie so that we could watch while we were awake. We have watched the first 2 1/2 hours of commercials intersperced with some of the actual show. This movie is really hyped up and they fill a lot of time with commercials. First observation.

We'll probably watch the final 1 1/2 hours tonite, basically because we started it, and we'll have some free time on our hands. Kinda like reading a book, you want to know how it ends....

What we are seeing are totally disfunctional relationships from every character in the movie. And not just a little disfunctional, but way over the edge. This ain't Mayberry. I find it really unpleasant to watch the social interaction portions of this movie. These folks are family or loved ones to each other in this movie and that's the best way they can communicate with each other??? I have fast forwarded over some of these scenes. Man, am I glad I recorded this. I can zip over commercials and junk.

The premise of the lead lady saying I am right, by "extrapolating" what no one else can see, and she can't prove it, but just insists that she is right, and the whole nation acts on her say so..... well that just pushes credibility a little too far. It is for the script writing alone that she "accurately" predicts the next strike and so, of course, she is now earthquake goddess and the whole nation has to listen and do as she says or,

ALL WILL DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sigh.... this could have been much better done, but since I recorded it and want to see how it ends.....

Buddur - the building code that came out in 2000 puts the New Madrid area as the highest seismic zone in the country. I think there might be a few local variances in CA that override it, but that's it. The seismic forces I have to design for in the Birmingham area have gone up 4x in certain instances.
