“I told Dub already I am bring some kind of police tape to corner off us an area, I hope big enough to house the entire group. With all the TT'ers and CH'ers coming this is going to be a large group.

So I need a list of how many sites to police off. Dub, can you start a new thread on the trips page for trails days and list everyone you know that needs a site? I hope I can find a place big enough...shouldn't be a problem.”

“Cross I am coming up thursday night. I can set up a couple extra tents either that night or friday morning. That should help keep some space. Put them up in a circle and leave some living space in the middle for "entertaining".”

15.5 (17.9) Damascus: The red caboose is a seasonal information station. Parking, restrooms in town park. Snacks, etc. in town.

17.5 (15.9) Iron Bridge: Enter Mount Rogers National Recreation Area.

19.5 (13.9) Straight Branch parking lot.

“If I can get the weekend off I want to make this trip. I would like to hike GRayson and Mt. Rogers. Is anyone interested in some trout fishing? I know they have a fishing rodeo or something like that in town, but I would like to get away for some quiet time.”

“Parking

Okay, I just called Town Hall to get some information. Parking at the campground is first come first serve and it will cost $10 for the weekend. If they run out of spaces (200) they have rented a lot on the outskirts of town--a shuttle will take you to the campground. Anyone arriving late, like myself, might be out of luck and forced to park somewhere around town and hike in.

Camping

The field on Shady Ave. is about 20 acres. It opens Thursday and is free. Last year they did not run out of space. Police officers will man the field 24/7 but that does not mean your stuff is safe. They suggest putting luggage locks on your tent. It is okay if we quarter off part of the field with tape or ropes. But we can't do it near the front where Backpacker will have a main fire ring and activities. We are permitted to have our own fire but we will have to bring our own firewoord.

So crosscut, you should have no problem marking off a large area if you're early enough...make it kind of big and have the first arrivals spread their tents out to the corners. See you guys there!”

“Dub we stayed at the free camping last year which is only a short walk from town. There was a shuttle but we liked the walk just fine.”

“I tend to bring extra things such as heavy chairs when car camping. It would be nice to have the car close by ;-) But I guess I can drop all of that off and then go park the car.”

“I havent had time to look up the AT around there on my CD's. I am bring my laptop and cameras so I will have the AT on CD-Rom with me. We can decide Friday depending on what everyone wants to do?
I really am not interested in hiking to the top of Rogers again or Grayson bec we will be there Labor Day. So I am thinking something would be right up my alley. Something to get the heart rate up!”
