Why Can't I See My President?

I always make a point of trying to see and meet the presidential candidates every four years. I've met Clinton, Gore, Dole, Bush Sr., etc.

Okay, so Bush Jr. has had several events in Michigan. Today he's taking a bus tour across the state. But every single time he does something like this there is no public access to the events.

Why can't an average, every day American meet this guy?

The Secret Service is extra protective post 9/11, once somebody's in office it's gonna be real hard to see them in public.

In the past, they'd usually distribute tickets through the local Republican party or a business. I've had to give my address and other info. before. Bush just doesn't seem to have anyone except invited guests.

I'd really like to see the president.

BTW, even though I'm a Democrat, I'd clap and be respectful.

It just seems awful that a normal citizen can't meet the guy.

Because, he's more valuable than Kerry. No one wants to whack Kerry because he's insignificant. Bush though! Plus your great state being the largest holder of Mid-eastern immigrants...there's gotta be some Al-quada in there somewhere! LOL

I caught his speech on WJR and he was very funny and personable.

Well, you know, Sterling Heights is a pretty rough area, RL. I outgta know, I could see Freedom Hill from the front window of the house I grew up in. And you know how I turned out. ;)

What a mess he caused on the local freeways!

My friend Mike was pisssssed. He claims that Bush just came here to drive around and shut down freeways. He then proceeded to call him a bunch of names.

Oh, BTW - Mike is also one of the biggest lock step Repubs I know, and he can't stand Bush now after all his "uniting"......

I can understand the dissapointment of RL. It would be nice to be able to interact with our employee.

Sorry, but I don't by the "since 9/11....." BS. People have been takingout Presidents for a while now, but only recently have the SS (WOW! now THAT'S weird, huh?) been portecting him this way. The President needs to be accessible, no two ways about it; it's just good Government!

It's the little stuff like this that gives people the negitive impressions that some have. He has no "tact", no "one with the people", which symbolizes elitism. Not goot fer bidness!

You'd be in for a big surprise Q if you ran into GW and Kerry on the street without any cameras around, Kerry would dismiss you in a sec if he wasn't after your vote, Bush would chat you up even if you cussed him out. As for the protection if Kerry is elected you can forget about getting close to him as well. The Secret Service is hyper-sensative.

I'm trying to slove the little sleep thing I've aquired over the years.

I think my pot and a half of coffee a day has something to do with me not being able to get to sleep at night.

Thank the yet to be confirmed Deity that everone calls God that I'll be outta that job position. It required me to keep "peepy", if you will, in order to get business done.

Bush begins bus tour
Hundreds line up for tickets locally

by MARY RAE BRAGG

Some people waited two hours Monday for a ticket to see President Bush on Friday at Dubuque's Grand River Center. They will have to awaken early Friday to get in the door at 6:30 a.m.

People stood three- and four-deep to get tickets Monday in a line winding around the seventh floor of the Dubuque Building, leading to Suite 705.
[...]

At least one person who said he waited patiently in line came away empty handed.

Bill Ward, of Dubuque, said he arrived at about 7:30 a.m., and waited an hour. When it came time to show his identification, Ward said he was asked if he supported Bush in 2000.

"I said I didn't vote for him then and I won't vote for him now," Ward said.

Saying he is a World War II veteran who served in Germany and France, Ward is strongly critical of the war in Iraq.

'The only thing I wanted to do was get down to the riverfront and ask Bush some questions," he said.

Ward's lack of support for the president apparently was his undoing.

"They asked some girl to escort me out and I told them I don't need to be escorted out," Wards said. "I'm a veteran of World War II."

Here's the reason you can't see Dubya... he is alWays "in the dark" by his own admission.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld will tell congressional committees Friday that he plans to form an independent panel to review how the Pentagon handled investigations into allegations of abuses of Iraqi prisoners, a senior administration official said.

His testimony comes at a time when some Democratic lawmakers and editorials have called for Rumsfeld to resign. Even many Republican lawmakers have expressed anger with the Pentagon leadership.

President Bush dismissed such calls Thursday but also has made clear he believes he was kept in the dark by the Pentagon about the scope of the problem.

At least he appears in your state to speak. He knows he'll never win here so he doesn't even bother showing his face. He just sends Air Force One to disrupt important political events.

President’s plane, sans Bush, puts in a local appearance

By DONALD WITTKOWSKI Staff Writer, Press of Atlantic City

PLEASANTVILLE - Was President Bush sneaking into Atlantic City for a little casino action to help him escape the worries of the White House?

Flying into Atlantic City International Airport on Thursday was Air Force One, the distinctive blue-and-white Boeing 747 jumbo jet with the words "United States of America" emblazoned across the fuselage.

This particular plane was part of the president's fleet of aircraft based at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington, D.C. But neither Bush nor any other senior administration officials were on board during its appearance at Atlantic City International.

Technically, it wasn't designated Air Force One.

"It's only called Air Force One when the president is on board, which was not the case," Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Holly Baker explained. "There weren't any key officials on board."

[...]
Still, the sight of Air Force One - sans Bush - flying low overhead drew the attention of local onlookers. It passed over the Atlantic City Expressway at the same time that Gov. James E. McGreevey was holding a press conference to announce the start of new high-speed E-ZPass lanes at the Pleasantville toll plaza.

One observer couldn't help noting the political significance of a plane that is part of Bush's Republican administration stealing the spotlight from the Democratic governor's press conference.

"What kind of insult is this? They have Air Force One flying over a Democratic event," complained Joe Orlando, a spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority.
