“ ![]() Sky & Telescope On May 5th Comet NEAT passes 9° from Sirius, the sky’s brightest star. On the 6th NEAT is closest to Earth (0.321 a.u.) and should be about at its peak brightness, perhaps magnitude 2.5. On May 7th NEAT passes just 1° northwest of the 5th-magnitude open cluster M47 in Puppis. (bring the binoculars)” 10:16:32 PM 5/03/04 “cool! I'll check it out!” 10:18:13 PM 5/03/04 “neat-o frito bandito! WHO'S BUYING THE BEER?” 10:23:44 PM 5/03/04 “Cool. Does it make you mad when you watch a movie and they have the comet tail following the comet instead of blowing away from the sun?” 5:08:36 AM 5/04/04 “Yeah... Like in your run-of-the-mill Sci-Fi movie when the spaceship ROARS past in the VACUUM of interstellar space, LOL It sounds like the best time for this comet thing will be after dusk and before moonrise over the next few days... Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat... It's not supposed to be very bright, so bring the binoculars.” 1:32:25 PM 5/04/04 “I'll bring the binoculars and drive 50 miles from this area.” 1:50:36 PM 5/04/04 “Light pollution sucks the big one... I Know.” 2:05:51 PM 5/04/04 “Space Weather News for May 5, 2004 http://spaceweather.com COMET NEAT: Long-awaited Comet NEAT (C/2001 Q4) is approaching Earth andgrowing brighter. At closest approach on May 7th, it will be 0.32 AU (48 million km) from our planet and about as bright as a 3rd magnitude star. The comet is now visible to the unaided eye--just barely--after sunset from dark-sky locations in the northern hemisphere. It looks like a fuzzy blob with a stubby tail. City dwellers are advised to use binoculars or a small telescope. Visit Spaceweather.com for pictures of the comet and a sky map. METEOR SHOWER: Today Earth is passing through a stream of dusty debris from Halley's Comet--the source of the annual eta Aquarid meteor shower. Unfortunately, tonight's full Moon will outshine the display, reducing it to near invisibility. Try listening, instead, using real-time links to meteor radars on Spaceweather.com.” 4:06:34 PM 5/05/04 “crap it's raining here” 4:36:56 PM 5/05/04 “You've still got another few days while it's at predicted maximum, then it'll begin to dim as it rises higher in the sky. I'm going to give it a shot tonight... Our weather might go to hell tomorrow or the next day (ya never know). I hope these midget binoculars are big enough to get the job done!” 5:00:44 PM 5/05/04 “In which direction? To the west?” 5:03:04 PM 5/05/04 “YAz...Nearly southwest, it looks like -- just to the left of Sirius tonight.” 5:07:12 PM 5/05/04 “I found it last night... Finally. It was just a tiny smudge in the midget binoculars. If you have some bigger binocs or a small telescope, you'll need it!” 7:02:44 PM 5/06/04 “So... you're saying earth won't pass through the comet's tail and toxic gases won't turn us all into zombies? Awwwwwwww, maaaaaaan.” 9:04:47 PM 5/06/04 “Geeeeee whillikers, I sure hope not! Ya Know, people say we passed through the tail of Halley's Comet in 1910. This is weird... I was just checking when H.G. Wells wrote In The Days Of The Comet. In the story, passing through the tail of a comet has just the opposite effect. In fact it stops a war. I was checking to see if Wells got the idea from Halley's passage in 1910, but what I'm looking at says that Wells published the story in 1906... Weirdness.” 1:04:25 AM 5/07/04 “YEAH BUT how did they make those letters stick in the sky like that?” 2:27:26 AM 5/07/04 “Anyone heard about the advertising "adjustments" made to make the new iPhone look smaller? http://www.boingboing.net/2007/06/21/apple_uses_bighanded.html Well, here's some other objects for comparison: http://www.iphonesize.com/” 2:20:12 PM 6/25/07 “LOL...heck the first salesmen for the first Pocket Recorder...had special shirts with extra large pockets so the recorder would fit.” 2:22:35 PM 6/25/07 “If you notice they also changed the lighting from a left wash to the right wash. That lessens the contrast on the left contour of the hand making the hand look even bigger. You really don't want to know the tricks of the trade for food stylists and photographers.” 2:23:49 PM 6/25/07 “Saw something about that a few years ago. Â Most of it (if not all) was ungodly plastic crap that would kill you dead as a hammer if you ingested it, LOL Ah, the Hot Fudge Sundae covered in whipped cream that can sit under the hot lights for Days.... Like on SNL --- "It's a dessert topping! Nooo, it's a floor wax!"” 2:34:30 PM 6/25/07 “Porno tricks for phoney flicks.” 3:19:03 PM 6/25/07 “There was a female comedian who had a line like that..... something about how bright bodybuilders were to bulk up and make their dicks look Even Smaller.” 6:16:06 PM 6/25/07 “http://www.boingboing.net/2008/08/20/simple-garden-lights.html This is a project I'm doing for the upcoming koi club meeting/ halloween party at our house.” 7:08:38 PM 8/23/08 “very neat indeed! I may also use them for our Halloween Monster Jam. which I will include the Kitty KAt Litter cake Thanks!” 6:20:02 AM 8/25/08 “oh yeah.... The Cake......” 11:08:48 AM 8/25/08 “mmmmmmm cake.” 11:16:01 AM 8/25/08 11:25:14 AM 8/25/08 “yup that's the one. TB turned me on to it and I have had one every year at my halloween party. big smash!” 11:48:38 AM 8/25/08 “Hmmmm.... but where to find food-grade litterbox liners and poopy-shovels?” 12:04:48 PM 8/25/08 “Last time I made one, I had about 20 adults (koi club halloween party) gagging (very realistic) and HPM just couldn't try it. He's scooped too many litter boxes I suppose. THe party hosts' grandson had great enjoyment in fishing out the tootsie rolls that were shaped into cat doots and eating them in front of others.” 4:38:24 AM 8/26/08 “OH yeah.....” 9:50:16 AM 8/26/08
