On May 5th Comet NEAT passes 9° from Sirius, the sky’s brightest star. On the 6th NEAT is closest to Earth (0.321 a.u.) and should be about at its peak brightness, perhaps magnitude 2.5. On May 7th NEAT passes just 1° northwest of the 5th-magnitude open cluster M47 in Puppis.

COMET NEAT: Long-awaited Comet NEAT (C/2001 Q4) is approaching Earth andgrowing brighter. At closest approach on May 7th, it will be 0.32 AU (48 million km) from our planet and about as bright as a 3rd magnitude star. The comet is now visible to the unaided eye--just barely--after sunset
from dark-sky locations in the northern hemisphere. It looks like a fuzzy
blob with a stubby tail. City dwellers are advised to use binoculars or a

Ya Know, people say we passed through the tail of Halley's Comet in 1910.

This is weird... I was just checking when H.G. Wells wrote In The Days Of The Comet. In the story, passing through the tail of a comet has just the opposite effect. In fact it stops a war.

I was checking to see if Wells got the idea from Halley's passage in 1910, but what I'm looking at says that Wells published the story in 1906...

“Last time I made one, I had about 20 adults (koi club halloween party) gagging (very realistic) and HPM just couldn't try it. He's scooped too many litter boxes I suppose. THe party hosts' grandson had great enjoyment in fishing out the tootsie rolls that were shaped into cat doots and eating them in front of others.”
