PLAGUE, CATS - USA (NEW MEXICO)
*******************************
A ProMED-mail post

ProMED-mail is a program of the
International Society for Infectious Diseases

The New Mexico State Department of Health has confirmed plague infections in 2 Santa Fe County cats, and the agency says several people exposed to the sick cats will be given antibiotics to prevent them from contracting the plague.

Plague is generally transmitted to people through the bites of infected fleas from rodents. The disease also can be transmitted by direct contact with infected animals -- including rodents, wildlife, and pets. Symptoms of bubonic plague in humans include fever, swollen lymph nodes, chills and sometimes headache, vomiting and diarrhea. Health officials urge people to regularly use flea control products on their pets.

Maybe we need to kill all the cats & dogs now and adopt another animal for domestication? Maybe something a little more like us.............and more intelligent...................

Plague of Cats
I thought this was going to be something totally different. Here in northern Illinois there has been a rash (20-30) claimed sightings of cougars (mountain lions, pumas etc. whatever you want to call them). Professional trackers have been unable to find confrim etc. However, the two cats seems to get arounda lot since the spottings have been covereing a range of some 20-30 miles or more. If confirmed, it would be the first time that cats were confirmed in Ill since one got squashed by a train many years ago.

Bring them to Houston
Dog tries to pull puppy from gator's mouth
10:03 AM CDT on Tuesday, May 4, 2004

From 11 News Staff Reports

A mother who lives near Lake Houston is on edge tonight after an alligator attacked her dog right in her backyard.

Leslie Santiago said the gator attacked when the puppy ventured near the lake that borders her yard.

While the gator had the puppy in its mouth, Santiago's other pet dog, Sophie, was pulling the puppy the other way to try and save it.

The alligator let go when Santiago hit it with a piece of concrete.

The puppy has puncture wounds in its neck but it survived.

Some wildlife alligator catchers nabbed an alligator late Saturday. They took it to the Santiago's home Sunday but Leslie Santiago said it was a lot bigger than the one that attacked her dog.

Santiago is still worried.

"No not total relief, I still won't let the kids fish and I'm still keeping the dogs away from there," said Santiago. "Safety first -- especially after seeing this thing."

Santiago said she's very nervous knowing that more alligators are still out there. She won't feel comfortable until they're all gone.
