The first number is oz and the second is pounds.” 4:07:13 PM 5/04/04 “Not bad at all as it includes food and water.” 4:14:27 PM 5/04/04 “14.5 with food and water is pretty good. I'm not sure I've ever traveled that light though, but I've been close. When I was packed for 4 days in the Smokies in April I was under 20 with food and water. That was about 10 minutes before canceling due to a field problem.” 4:50:26 PM 5/04/04 super “I enjoy reading your gear lists,so I will post mine. You got the weight down to a 100th of a pound. You'll have the most bragging rights in camp for sure.” 5:23:45 PM 5/04/04 “cotton shorts? OMG, you'll go to hell for that! Who do you throw the throwing knife at? 8# base is great!” 5:32:28 PM 5/04/04 “well, thanks.... yeah i just had to put those cotton shorts on to stop the chafing- ya know? And I vaguely remember using that darn knife for something.....maybe opening up that tube of chocolate pudding, or the slimjim... Getting the weight down was the only way I could do this 3243' foot elevation change hike on an overnighter in 100' weather. Going without my tarp was a great weight-savings, and I really didn't need it. I sure didn't need the pepsi stove and fuel, there was plenty of wood. OH, and I did have TP, just didn't count it cuz it was in my pocket :)” 5:42:22 PM 5/04/04 “Throwing knife. Now that's a first that I have seen on someone's gear list. I have heard of boy scouts taking nunchakus and throwing stars to "fight off bears".” 5:48:09 PM 5/04/04 “Hey, you could open the slimjim from 10 paces with a good eye.” 5:50:29 PM 5/04/04 “I have a friend that takes a hatchet when we go to the Smokies. Our first trip together the bear thing is really talked about. The next morning I see him wonder out of camp with a hatchet in one hand and a whole role of TP in the other. Wish I had a picture of that.” 5:51:18 PM 5/04/04 “LOL@ Dayhiker!” 5:52:11 PM 5/04/04 “I tried to post a gear list--it is on an excel program and lists everything I own. Anyway, with a poncho for shelter and an 8oz book and some cigarettes a fictional summer weight was 7.81 pounds.” 6:30:41 PM 5/04/04 “Wow. I bring as much in luxury items as some of bring total! But since I weigh 270 lbs already, cutting my pack weight from 35 lbs to say 20 lbs wouldn't make the hike any faster or easier. I would have to spend a pile of money, and be very uncomfortable, to shave that much weight. It would be much easier and cheaper to go on a diet for a few months and lose 20 lbs. I would never give up the comfort and convenience of my Hennesy hammock (2.5 lbs) to sleep on the GROUND, just because it saved me a pound or so! Egads, what an idea! But to each his/her own. I do applaud the inginuity of those who devise their lightweight schemes. They seem to attack it almost like a sport in it's own right. Kinda sounds like fun, if you're into it.” 11:41:29 PM 5/04/04 “Slugman, my plan for this season was to loose 20lbs and get my pack weight to 20lbs. So far I have lost the 20lbs and I will see this weekend if i can keep my pack to 20lbs. It should feel like I am hiking without a pack on at all!” 8:56:49 AM 5/05/04 “walkindude needs to post his pack weight. I know on this past trip he looked like he had a day pack on as usual” 9:02:27 AM 5/05/04 “Personal weight is a much bigger deal, I agree. That's why I dropped 30 summer before last. I've put 10-15 back on, but let's not tell anyone.” 9:11:15 AM 5/05/04 throwing knife “the throwing knife is an idea i picked up somewhere, can't remember. Since it is automatically a fixed blade and it is light, and it fits in a cardboard sheath, i figured the advantages were worthwhile. So I left the micra home. But I also carry a razor blade, and a small pointed razor for getting those pesky slivers out. (and cactus needles)” 1:40:15 PM 5/05/04 “Well I think this year is the year that I truly enter into the fabled sub 10 pound class for a weekend. My basics should be right around 6 pounds: 1 lbs. Tarp 1 lbs. Hammock 1.5lbs. quilt 2 lbs. Pack 6 oz. kitchen” 8:25:37 AM 2/23/05 “Is the kitchen including stove? A pepsi-can? Fuel included? I'm jealous of that weight, but are you including clothes in there?” 8:30:25 AM 2/23/05 “Maybe Nigal is going to backpack naked.” 8:33:18 AM 2/23/05 “The kitchen includes pot, esbit wing stove, tabs, spoon and lighter. No it doesn't include clothes but the only clothes I take in summer is what I wear. With first aid and the like it should be right around 10 pounds. Food would be maybe 1.5 lbs.” 8:52:26 AM 2/23/05 “Sounds good. I was hoping there was first aid in there somewhere. And also, I didn't realize you were talking about summer. That's one advantage about summer, not having to bring along all that heavy equipment. Why a hammock and not foam pad?” 8:55:22 AM 2/23/05 “The hammock I have is 1 pound and has bug netting. A foam pad on the ground can't even come close to comparing with a night of blissful slumber swinging in the hammock. It's the best night of sleep I have ever had on the trail. Plus in summer it is a lot cooler.” 8:58:24 AM 2/23/05 “Ultra light rules !! My list Gregory G pack tarptent virga or clark hammock snowpeak giga titanium stove snowpeak solo cook pot marmot helium sleeping bag thermorest prolite I'm always under 10pds (not including food/water/cigars/flask/etc....” 9:00:51 AM 2/23/05 “never understood why people need first aid kits. i carry a couple of sterile bandages and a couple of asprin tablets. there's duct tape on my trek poles and i carry a small all purpose little bottle of soap. what else could you need?” 9:03:32 AM 2/23/05 “thats about all that's in my first aid, add a couple of alcohol wipes and an ace bandage. I carry a small wash cloth, pen, a few sheets of note pad, and mole skin as well” 9:07:43 AM 2/23/05 “footwear for summer ??” 9:11:07 AM 2/23/05 sweet Nigal “Baseweight = 0 pounds Go naked, use leaves and dirt for sleeping, eat bugs and rodents for food, drink only when at a spring/stream. Seriously, my base weight for summer is about 15 pounds - excludes food, water, fuel. I do take a few luxuries I won't go without (like my Slinglight). I should be able to get it down to 14 with a new pad I want.” 10:11:01 AM 2/23/05 ““footwear for summer ??” I like running shoes but my feet have gotten wide and I have trouble finding ones that fit and don't rub my little toe off. I wear a pair of light mid weight hikers year round.” 10:16:50 AM 2/23/05 “I don't know about eatting bugs and sleeping in the leaves but I do leave a great deal of stuff at home when I go ultralight. I find it very freeing.” 10:17:48 AM 2/23/05 “my base is about 12 pounds, but where i go (adks) it often gets down into the 50's at night in the middle of summer.” 10:23:08 AM 2/23/05 “I'm nearly sub 10lbs base weight, even with my 6 lb tent.” 10:45:30 AM 2/23/05 “My 118lb base weight includes: Empty pack.................12lbs 5 liters of water..........38lbs Lantern.....................6lbs Cot.........................9lbs 4 person tent (roomy)......13lbs Assault Rifle...............9lbs Ammunition.................21lbs Food (watermelon)..........10lbs 8)” 10:55:54 AM 2/23/05 “LOL” 10:56:28 AM 2/23/05 “Reminds me a familiar violin troll...” 10:57:36 AM 2/23/05 “Old Mountain Roamer. He didn't even make it a day before outed himself on that one did he? LOL!” 10:59:05 AM 2/23/05
