“The cheapest solution is to use iodine tabs. I wouldn't attempt to make my own water filter and expect it to work.

Not everyone can use iodine though, some people are sensitive to it.”

“Or you can use tincture of iodine...I think that's even cheaper than the tabs. Carry along some cheap Vitamin C tabs to kill the taste after the iodine has done its work.”

“If you use iodine, get some vitamin C tablets as well. Once the iodine has done its job (after about 30 minutes or so), add the vitamin C to the water to neutralize the iodine taste and color in the water.”
