The cheapest solution is to use iodine tabs. I wouldn't attempt to make my own water filter and expect it to work.

Not everyone can use iodine though, some people are sensitive to it.

Aqua Mira drops work well too.

I just ordered the Katadine Hiker from REI this morning. It's about the cheapest you'll find and there's a $10 rebate too so it comes down to $49.99. Whatever you do DO NOT get a sweetwater.

Or you can use tincture of iodine...I think that's even cheaper than the tabs. Carry along some cheap Vitamin C tabs to kill the taste after the iodine has done its work.

If you use iodine, get some vitamin C tablets as well. Once the iodine has done its job (after about 30 minutes or so), add the vitamin C to the water to neutralize the iodine taste and color in the water.

Iodine can be Toxic. It shouldn't be used as an alternative but as an emergency substitute.

Howdy, neighbor, I'm in PA. Welcome to the list. Although it's not the cheapest water filter out there, I carry the MSR Miniworks and I love it. It's a little on the heavy side weighing in at 16.3 ounces and it's also slower to pump, but the result is some good water!
