Got a new dog!
His name is Taj, as in Taj Mahal. He is a retired racer, fresh off a track in Florida...his last race was earlier in the spring. He is 5, lazy as can be (enjoying retirement I suspect) and still trying to get used to all the things other dogs learn as a puppy, like their name, stairs, mirrors, glass doors etc. I have seen him run a couple of times, and I think its a lost cause if he gets off the leash...

Ive only got a couple of pics, but here they are:

Kewl Beans fonsie!
Have you heard the news reports about the greyhounds being found to have cocaine in their systems to make them run faster? I heard that on the radio this morning. I think it was somewhere in FL.

Cool looking dog dude! I like that brindle coat he's got. Did you get him from a rescue program?

I havent heard that one, but Id be interested in seeing a report if you knew where it came from...Ive seen a few in the last couple of years where locals and track security guards have been convicted of animal cruelty. Apparently the tracks were paying them 8 dollars per dog to take them out and shoot them because the vet would charge 16 to euthanize them humanely. Kind of sad, and a horrible waste of an otherwise great animal.

Yeah, the Southeastern Greyhound Adoption Program. They rescue dogs from the south Florida/Alabama tracks and bring them up here to Atlanta and some other cities and adopt them out.

If he was more of a spazz that would explain things, but he is a total couch potato. I have to beg him to get up to use the bathroom.

I used to have an Italian Greyhound. That little thing was fast - no problem keeping up with rabbits and cats and the like.

He has spooked a few rabbits out on a walk, and I dont think he would hesitate to give chase if given half the chance.

I saw him on a hellbent tear at the campground last Saturday. When he goes>> HE GOES!!!

Sorry Sarabelle, can't say that Ive ever seen Gizmo rum, but it sounds funny as hell... Ive taken Taj on a couple of runs with me now, and it almost embarasses me how little effort he puts forth to keep pace. He goes 0-40 faster than my truck....

Fonsie - What is it with dogs that sleep with their legs straight up in the air. My Shepard/Lab mix does this.

I wish I knew, cause it sure is funny.... I wonder if it has anything to do with being so used to sleeping in a crate. He likes to find little nooks and enclosed spots to sleep.

Our dog usually starts out in her bed, then, sometime in the middle of the night, jumps up and squeezes between us.

Sometimes I wake up and have no feeling in my legs because she is sprawled out across them.

fonsie, looks like you have a great dog there. I love the pics of him. My chihuahua sleeps on her back in my bed under the covers. It's funny to look above the covers, and see a spot that's raised from all four of her feet being in the air.

Your dog may very well like enclosed areas, because of being in a cage all the time. Taj must be the happiest dog in town to be in a real home. Good luck with him.

Fast dog, you wanna see a fast dog. Take a look at my chihuahua. Capri is faster than a bullet. If she ever got off the leash, she would be history too. I have a micochip embedded in her, but if she was lost, I don't think anyone could get near her to pick her up.

He definitly seems to be enjoying all the sleep, the treats, and belly rubs and stuff. They dont ever have much human interaction when they are at the truck (other than the trainers) so he's loving it all. He's got a tatoo on the inside of his ear, it shows the year, and location of birth, as well as his gender, but parts of it are hard to read now (his ear was torn pretty badly at the track, and they never stitched it, so now it just flaps in the breeze.)

You need to train your pooch well... and then and only THEN, learn the full power of pooches as a babe magnet!!

An example of "pooch power" at REI... LOL!"

lizs, it's really sad to watch me & my husband with our chihuahua. We both fight over who is going to walk her. Hubby loves the attention he gets from all the girls when he walks her. Capri illicits smiles from everyone when she walks by. THEN, she is so small, the girls have to bend over to look at her, which gives an excellent down the front of the shirt view!

I ran into this old man that said to us how great it is to have a dog that gets attention, and if he were single, he would get another one.

fonsie, your dog is a real cutie. You should bring a paper & pen with you when you walk him to take down numbers of gals that you meet.

It would have to be a microchip. Anything bigger than micro would be too big for a chihuahua.

Faster than my dog? Everything is faster than my dog. An older, overweight, arthritic Golden Retriever. The vet says quality of life right now is much more important than losing weight for him.

skiracer, I know I'm not your favorite person, so I just thought you were having a little fun by correcting me.

Oh! MICROchip! MICROdog! Sometimes it take me a second go round, lol.

I'm sorry to hear about your doggie. I wish you good luck with him. Today we know more about the benefits of keeping slim, so I watch how much I feed Capri and coordinate it with how much excersize she gets.

nashvillehiker, who is inspector clouseau, besides Peter Sellers?

My dog likes to "bluff charge" people like bears do. She rushes up to someone real quick, then backs off. It's cute, but I'd rather she was friendly.

none other than Peter Sellers. Actually there was a movie that came out in 1965 I think where someone else played Clouseau and more currently, Steve Martin is taking a stab at playing the bumbling detective. Peter Sellers was a genius and one of the greatest comedic minds of all time.

I Knew Folks Who Had A GOlden Retriever Named "Taj
How funny! My dog also sleeps with his butt against the wall and his legs up in the air.

My brother and his wife have a whip-it, like a small greyhound, and that dog can run. They've had it for years now and still won't let it off it's leash nomatter where they are. Once it starts running, there's no stopping it. I guess that's what they like to do...that and lay around the rest of the day.

There's another greyhound scandal going on in FL. right now. Turns out a few hundred dogs have tested positive for cocaine. They're doping the dogs before races.

What an awesome looking dog! There are compitions for sight hounds, kinda like agility contests but the dogs just chase plastic bags on a cable. My boss raises Ridgebacks and he takes his dog to them all the time.

Isn't the belly up ,legs up posture supposed to be a sign that the dog's happy, feels safe and is just down-right content? I think I read something along those lines....

Our dogs do it too. The mutt always looks the funniest, he keeps his head all straight chin up and his ears spread out over the floor. I swear he smiles too.
