I am dayhiking Mt. Washington via the Huntington Ravine with my brother on Memorial Day weekend. The mountain will probably be mobbed but doing it anyway. Anyone want to come??

A cattle prod could be entertaining on the summit.

'Way too funny, Zac.

What's the date? If it's in May, I'm still in my school rugby season and Friday evenings and Sunday morning are reserved for training.

You will only have a few daring souls going up Huntington's Ravine most of the crowd takes Tuckerman’s. Once you’re on the summit, however, it will be a zoo.

I might be in the vicinity doing trail work on the Davis Path. Look toward Mt. Isolation and wave hello.

It's interesting that the main page shows this thread started by nashvillehiker and the first post by earthnsky. I wonder how the server got your two names confused on a single login.

it's done that for the last couple threads that I have started. I think it's my work computer.

You might want to make sure the trail is open up Huntington Ravine. I came down that way one Mem day w/e and I think it was the very first day the trail was open.

Good point Pedxing (btw good to see you are ok). They might send you up Tuckerman's to Lion Head (winter route).

Skiracer, are you going on this trip?

I am planning on it. We'll just need to set up a time and place to meet. If it's going to be a zoo, maybe the earlier we get started, the better.

yeah, my brother and I plan on getting to the base of the mountain pretty early.

It'd be nice to see some snow on the headwall.

Just a quick comment. Do not under any circumstances go through North Conway on your way to Mt. Washington, especially during Memorial weekend. Let me know which way you are coming from and I can suggest an alternative route.

North Conway...
Mad, you thinkin' about bringing him across the Kancamagus instead??

Yes, and then taking Bear Notch road to Rt 302 in Barlett and then picking up Rt16 in Glen. You do not want to go through North Conway on a holiday weekend, EVER!

You can also go Rt 93 to Rt 3 to Rt 302 to Rt 16. Or go north by Rt 93 to Rt 3 to Rt 115 to Rt 2 and then south on Rt 16. All of these routes are preferable than going through North Conway.

Thanks for the tip, MadRiver. I usually go up 93 to 3 to 302 to 16, anyway.

madRiver ..

What about the West Side Road??

I say that knowing that the traffic often backs up in Conway meaning that you have to wait to even make the turn onto it.

The West Side Road is helpful if you must be in North Conway and need to negotiate the conga line of cars heading to the outlets. However, if you can avoid North Conway all together, by all means do that. I have used the West Side Road in the past if I need to visit EMS in the north and Ralph Lauren in the south.

MadR . . if you follow West side all the way out . . .it drops you on Route 302 well north of the North Conway.

It drops you just beyond where Route 16 heads north to Jackson and Pinkham notch and 302 heads more north westerly . .

I made the mistake once (only once) of popping out in the middle of North Conway (right by the Eastern slopes Inn .. .and that was 20 years ago . .before outlets . ..but during the height of the Volvo tennis tournament .. with a VW microbus full of stinky cmapers. .

Anyhoo . . .coming from the north off of 302 you must remember to turn correctly, at the correct spot . . .it is a left turn I am sure . .. .I think . . . .and you will end up down in COnway center ... .otherwise you end up in North CConway.

NO ON NO NO NO

NOT A LEFT TURN . ..the left turn puts you irght in North Conway . .. stay to the right!!!!

when headed north to south .. ..if you are headed south to north (from COnway to 302 towards bretton woods) then I suppose you'd bear left . ..

GET A MAP!

Although the west side road is helpful, you best option is to just avoid North Conway all together.

We're going to night hike to the summit and get to the summit prior to Sunrise and then hike around the ridge once up on top and then back down. I believe that we can meet at Pinkham Notch visitor center which is the trail head. I will update this in a little bit
