I'll be traveling with om's group. She will take care of our transportation to and from the trailhead so don't include me in y'alls van plans.”

What kind of temps should we expect?
How low will it go at night? Gotta figure which bag to take.

Will water be available at each day's camp?

Are we camping above treeline?
That will make me decide between a bear can or hanging.”

“Stove - I've always taken a 20 degree bag to the winds and that's been fine. There should be water at each nights camp, no problems there, plenty of water in the Winds. Peak lake is above treeline, I'm not bringing a bear can though, I'll find a ledge to hang my food. The bears are there in the Winds, but I've never seen one or had any food problems.”

“I read that the Pinedale Ranger Office had Bear Cans to rent.

Anyone know about this?

I'm looking at maybe buying a Bearikade, but at $240 it sure would be nice to rent one for the trip.”

“We have a Garcia bear cannister we can loan someone.

We will be driving from the TH to SLC returning home. If anyone needs a ride back to SLC, but not to Pinedale from SLC, we will have room.”

“I might be taking you up on your offer of going back to SLC.

Most of the nights we will be at around 10,000 feet. I would expect the nights to be more chilly then cool. Storms can come up unexpectly, so you must be prepared for all kinds of weather.

My advice: Don't worry about weight and pack warm gear, wet gear and comfortable gear. The first three days are about 6 miles each. Even with a heavy pack that is not a lot. You should be acclimated and in shape after three days going up hill.”

“Initial plan: Myself and Bison will meet Om and Group @ group site. We will then drive OM's and our vehicle. to Trails End Campground with Wannabp following. Wannabp will then drive us back to New Fork Group. This way, for people like Bison, he can scoot out early and others have the option of staying a little longer. We can decide what everyone is going to do in the end later.

“First day: As you climb into New Fork Canyon, you can see crystalline rock overlying yonger sedimentary strata. a legacy of the thrust-faulting that formed the Wind Rivers. Near the canyon's major bend the trail crosses teh river twice. The fainthearted can avoid these tricky crossings by clambering through boulders on the north bank. Beyond the bend is New Fork Park, near teh upper end of which the Palmer Lake Trail crosses teh reiver and enters Palmer Canyon, while the New Fork Trail begins climbing in earnest. From New Fory Canyon's head the Porcupine Trail continues north...

Is anyone else struggling with the Earthwalk Press map?

“I think the map is OK. I am using two books plus that map and all three of them of different information on them. It is hard to use all three together and come up with a good plan.”

“That 55lbs includes my camera equipment, we're not going but a few miles each day, so might as well bring the whole house along and do it up right. I have the USGS quads that cover most of the route and several books and the Earthwalk press maps. I don't think I've seen or read any conflicting info.”

I ordered the Kelsey book and Latta Outdoors says it's shipped. Almost time to nail the route in my mind. I bought the WY Topo software when this trip planning started. With the book and the map and the software, I can produce some elevation profiles for us.”
