New World Pasta files for bankruptcy

Dammit this Atkins crap has gone far enough! If you don't want the pasta, fine, but keep buying it so I can get pasta, okay?

In a related issue, that hits kinda close to home for me, the orange juice industry is really feeling it too. They are going to soon be running a major tv ad campaign touting the health benefits of orange juice.

They are seeing a drop in sales for the first time since the mid 50's.

Maine potato farmers are supposedly being affected by Atkins as well...

Dr Weil's philosophy isn't a fad diet, but a very healthy way to eat. Good choice, divinity!

No carbs is bull. I stayed trim all my life eating carbs like pasta with bean dishes.

I'm on South Beach,... it's definitely better than Atkins. After 2 weeks you slowly reintroduce the carbs back in, but they're healthy carbs. I'm prolonging the 2 weeks to 4 weeks just to lose extra weight.

Thanks, Phaedy, but I just wanna lose about 10-15 lbs. THEN I'll eat the pizza!

bitpusher, you know, ordering anchovies on half a pizza screws up the other half. That anchovy juice goes over to the other side.

If you are ever over your mom's and he is ordering anchovies on half a pizza, you better order a meatball hero or something for yourself.

Krispy Kreme donuts is another Atkins casualty. Their stock is plummiting.

That anchovy story is an urban legend. The anchovy is nature's perfect food. If you love them, then great. If you hate them, then try the diet where you can eat as much as you want, but only of foods you hate. It's a win/win! Long live the anchovy! Huzzah!

I used the Atkins diet 30 years ago to lose weight. I could lose 15 lbs in 6 weeks no problemo.

However, it is not a healthy diet and people are starting to have problems. Hard on your kidneys and bad for your heart. It is questionable if you can stay on it forever without some real damage. I like a more balanced approach...lots of room for different preferences as well.

Atkins is a diet that works great, but needs modification on a long term basis. I have been on it since Jan. 5th and it is wroking great for me. My weight is down. My triglycerides are finally normal again. And I have more energy than I have in quite a while. Everybody's different, but the carb load seemed to be doing me more detriment than I even imagined. Now, carbs are not non-existent in my diet, but I have learned to eat less, discipline myself and modify this diet to more suit me needs.

i've never had an anchovie. do they still have those beady little eyeballs intact when you eat them?

i'm not on a low-carb diet by any means, but the whole Atkins thing has made me more aware of the way carbs work in your body, and of the "good" carbs vs. "not-so-good" carbs. i already have trouble w/low blood sugar, so i've been better lately about eating things that won't give me a big blood-sugar jump and then a big drop.

I like anchovies on Caesar salad. YUM! They look at you with those little eyes!

We used to carbo-load back in the late 70's and early 80's when it was the rage for marathoners. You'd do a long run a week before the race to burn off most of your glycogen and then eat no cabohydrates for the next 3 days. After 3 days you'd eat nothing but cabohydrates; the theory was your body would "overload" itself and store more glycogen.

If you're training hard like that and drop the carbs it gets pretty uncomfortable. You go into ketosis and start burning into your fat stores which produces a ketones- a waste product- that tastes like metal. We were real freaks back then.

Aero, that would make sense for runners and those 'in shape'. For guys like me that were overweight, I don't think burning the fat would be as detrimental. Yes? No??
Treebeard

It probably wouldn't. That's how the South Beach Diet works; you get the jump start in the first two weeks where you go on a strictly no-carb phase. The hard part is that your brain needs lots of carbohydrates and it makes people cranky after a few days!

But, you really dump a lot of water when you switch to protein and fat burning, so that accounts for a lot of the early losses. It can be tough on the kidneys.

i lost 10lbs in the first week of the south beach diet. i did have low energy, but more than that, it really screwed with my natural cycles, if you know what i mean. i want to go back on SB, but i think i'll skip the first phase, and concentrate on eating the good carbs. it has to be less like a "diet" and more like a life change. i still haven't learned that lesson yet.

I see. If anyones interested: I believe the whole wheat pastas can be so full of fiber that it probably cancels out "bad carbs".
