I'm thinking of setting up a TT trip to the start of the AT on Springer Mt. in Georgia the Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 8-11.

Thinking we could start from the USFS 42 parking (less than a mile from Springer), camp near the Springer shelter Friday night, return via the AT to the cars Saturday morning (Saturday arrivals could join then), shuttle a car to Hightower Gap, return, backpack along the AT , play around Long Creek, camp near Hawk Mt Shelter Saturday night, come out Sunday morning at Highttower Gap.

Light miles and easy walking in this section. Maybe 8 miles Saturday. Less than 1 Sunday.

Those that have Monday off could extend their mileage and continue to Gooch Gap Shelter Sunday night and come out at Gooch Gap.

Anyone interested?

I can confirm that TC4 is on the same weekend. Smokeygirl is working on finalizing the plans.

It will be held at Martins Fork again.

I've done this section a couple of times, but was always in a hurry to get miles in. It is a very beautiful area. I would like to just 'smell the roses' and take it easy, play along the waterfalls, take pictures, etc.

I'm likely to keep this same date because I'm off that Monday and will be looking to backpack somewhere that weekend.

I probably will not be going to TC4.

I did a very similar trip last year and no one showed. I was left on the mountaintop with no one to shuttle.

Sorry that was my bad. Maybe I'll make it up to you some day on a trip. MAybe I could grill some of my trout! I got 3rd place a TC3 last year with my "secret" recipe. I have to bail on Divinity this weekend for TRail Days. But I have to put my family first. LAst year, my wife was out of town and I got some bad news about my daughter. I'll tell you about it some day on the trail. This time it is not as bad, but I have to be around for sure.

I would love to go on this trip, but my schedule has me working that weekend. Columbus Day is not a holiday for us, I just lucked out and got it off last year for TC3. But if it changes I am ready for this trip!

I can throw my hat in as a maybe. Though, word of warning. FS42 parking areas have had a lot of trailhead car break-ins lately. It is a very UNSECURE parking area. Very remote with almost zero chance of catching anyone attempting a brake-in. Long Creek Falls is a beautiful area, and that's a great section of trail.

I hate to tell you this, but Yam is just a wee bit older than that.
I'm older than dirt at 49. Ewker is even waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy older than me. ;-)

We've got some damned old dirt up here and I'm older than most of it. Is the trail wide enough to accomodate my walker? Will Depends burn in a camp fire? Considering on where I hope to be next March, this could be a good trip for me.

You guys do know this is the same weekend as TC4?
There does appear to be some interest.
This is a couple of hundred miles away from TC4, so I don't feel to bad about putting up a 'competing' trip.
I'll make a post for the trip page next week after I get back from a family backpack this weekend.

I got burned big time on a trip just like this one a couple of years ago. I planned, set up, drove 440 miles one way, and no one showed except me (2scoops said he was coming, then didn't). Then I had no one to shuttle with. If a great Boy Scout leader hadn't given me a lift, I would have been screwed. thread
