for the logo..............
shouldn't there be a couple of folks hovering over that fire with a hotdog on a stick ??
Raining or not is optional ?? COOL !! Since I am a "fair weather" backpacker.... I choose fair weather, slightly coolish, and no rain or inclement weather in the forecast.

oh.......... and ALL the wood is dry, already cut to size and ready to burn.

Heritage Trails Festival Hosts the 4th Annual Titanium Chef BackCountry Cook-off in Cumberland Gap, TN – October 15th and 16th, 2004 – Rain or shine!

Before people came through Cumberland Gap, migratory animals used the break in the Appalachian Mountains to search further west for food. People traveled in pursuit of game, and began to settle in this scenic area. History is representing itself in our modern times – backpackers, hikers, bikers, and outdoors enthusiasts leave most of our modern day conveniences to return to nature reminding ourselves of what mountain life could be like. Before you make plans to see the leaves of autumn this year, mark you calendar for the third weekend in October 2004 to attend Heritage Trails Festival – Hike, Bike, and Run.

Even if you don’t partake in the competitions (see preliminary schedule attached), there are plenty of other festivities for people of all ages and interests to enjoy such as:

Pre-paid Friday Night BBQ, Live Music
Door Prizes (for entries submitted by September 15th, 2004)

Vendor Booths Talks for Beginner’s Backpacking, Beginner’s Mountain Biking, Back Country Cooking 101, and Leave No Trace Bike/Run Relay Race, Breakfast Cook-off, 5K Run, and Titanium Chef BackCountry Cook-off Hands-on Demonstration of Arts and Crafts (involving Cumberland Gap’s School of Arts and Crafts) Food, and more!

A website for the Heritage Trails Festival is under construction. For more details such as lodging/camping, check www.titaniumchef.com in the future for a hyperlink to the Heritage Trails Festival website. And, of course, there’s the 4th Annual TC BackCountry Cook-off (TC4), which will take place in the same location as last year – in Martin’s Fork of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.

Contestants must hike a 7.5 mile requirement to enter. Rules and Entry Form will be available at www.titaniumchef.com. Judging and awards from TC4 will be announced in the town of Cumberland Gap where the Heritage Trails Festival will be taking place.

Description of Festival Events
TC4 BackCountry Cook-Off $20 entry fee. The first Titanium Chef started out as a Trail Talk trip from thebackpacker.com (Tc1), and drew backpackers from 15 different states to Grundy State Forest in Tennessee. After that, Titanium Chef stuck. Tc2 was held in Big South Fork, and then Tc3 moved to the tiny town of Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. The town and the Cumberland Gap National Park embraced us with their warm hospitality. Titanium Chef was given a home for backpackers to convene, explore the beautiful and historic area, and take part in some good eatin’. So come on out to the Heritage Trails Festival and support Tc4 in 2004 for the weekend of October 15th and 16th. Please see the document “Rules for the Chef” on the requirements to enter. You must be able to hike 7.5 miles to Martin’s Fork, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.

Breakfast Cook-Off $20 entry fee This cook-off is provided to contestants that would rather stay in town Saturday instead of attending the Titanium Chef BackCountry Cook-off that is 7.5 miles up in the mountains above the town. The hiking requirement is an approximate 2-miles for the breakfast cook-off. The breakfast cook-off will take place in the town of Cumberland Gap. First, second, and third prizes to be won. First prize is a free one-night stay in the Ramada Inn, Cumberland Gap. (Participants that enter the breakfast cook-off should have time to shuttle up to Martin’s Fork for TC4.

The Molasses Run & Bike Relay $40 two-person team entry fee.The first team member will run approximately 6 miles on the beautiful Greenway Trail and tag the second team member at a designated spot at the Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate. The second team member will bike 8-10 miles into the woods from the University on mountain bike and jeep trails. The bike section will have varying degrees of difficulty including intermediate to advanced single-rail bike trails. Medals will be given out for first, second, and third places. Specifics about the actual course still being determined. The Greenway Trail is a newly constructed treasure connecting the town of Cumberland Gap with the city of Harrogate and Lincoln Memorial University. Part of this course on the Greenway Trail will take you over two covered bridges and through a historic train tunnel.

Thunder Road 5K Run $20 entry fee. Run the infamous Thunder Road, the old Wilderness Road, and the newly constructed Greenway Trail. Specifics about exact course still being determined. Medals for first, second, and third places. *Profits from this event will go to the Union College Cycling Team. *All other profits from the Heritage Trails Festival will go to proceeds for the Cumberland Gap Core Group for Revitalization.

What if you only participate in one event or none at all? You won’t want to miss the Bluegrass, Country, and Gospel Bands, Hiking Awareness Talks, Quality Craft and Food Vendors that will be going on all day Saturday, October 16th in the historic town of Cumberland Gap.

Dub: but yes.. it is, and always will be not-for-profit.

It's sponsored by a town for God's sake.. hehe.. Coca-Cola hasn't bought the rights to this one yet.. (but they do have a really good entry into sponsoring -- since they bottle water there, and sell it under the Coca-Cola name and Cumberland Gap trademark.

Cool, I'm signed up. I wonder how big this thing will get? Will it become something like Trail Days? Is there a chance that 100's of people might enter the contest meaning many more in the backcountry... Will backpacker.com people actually backpack? Only time will tell.

Is it a requirement that you provide your recipe? One of the recipes I'm gonna use (BTW, if I enter two dishes does that mean two entry fees?) is a long-time family recipe and my grandmother wouldn't be too thrilled if someone was selling it...but damn is it good!
