Then, publish a book based on your experiences that describes that trail in detail.

Establish a not-for-profit foundation and appoint yourself as the head of the foundation. Paying yourself a salary of course. Call it the "American Center for (insert trail name here) Studies".

Then, sell your book under the auspices of the foundation and funnel all the proceeds through there, so you don't have to pay any taxes on that money (until you pay yourself, of course).

Use foundation money as your personal hiking checkbook, all under the guise of "continuing your study of the (insert trail name here again).

“In Maine you have to be a licensed guide to lead outdoor trips for money. You have to provide all the gear and food, and put up with people's crap. You're also responsible for them if they break the law or get hurt or whatever.

Could work for an outfitter and not have the insurance, etc hassle, but still must be licensed.”
