The National Park Service is holding an open house meeting to present a proposed change in the route of the North Country National Scenic Trail in Northeastern Minnesota. Park planners will be available to answer questions about the trail, explain the project, and gather public comments. You should only need around a half hour to attend. 5pm–8pm at REI in Bloomington, 750 W 79th St, Bloomington, MN 55420.” 10:51:33 PM 5/12/04 “That's a nice REI there, lizs.” 8:57:37 AM 5/13/04 “i thought this re-route already took place long ago... all the maps i've seen include this?” 9:34:29 AM 5/13/04 New Section Planned in Wisconsin “Yesterday, and the next three days, I am part of an authorized group of six backpackers scouting out a route to fill in the 12 mile gap of the North Country Trail between Copper Falls State Park, Wisconsin and Upson Lake, Wisconsin. Last year we scouted out a northern route, this year a southern route over the second highest point in Wisconsin. As you would know, yesterdays forecast called for highs 50 to 55, with rain starting in the late afternoon. We started out near Upson Lake to go west at 10:18 a.m. at 45 degrees. It immediately started raining, and the temperature DROPPED to 39 degrees, and the rain got continuous and heavy. At about 2:30 p.m., our youngest member and thinnest backpacker started shivering a lot if we stopped for a moment, so we hiked to the neareast road, so we road hiked fast almost 5 miles to the nearest vehicle, getting there around 4:00 p.m. Drenched, with falling temperatures, we headed for the rooves. Two went to the nearest motel. One back to his dorm. Three to my cabin slightly less than an hours drive away, where the fireplace and venison burritos warmed us up. Today, we try again, I'll post a trip report with photos on Monday. The college guy who was shivering said he probably won't join up with us for the rest of the scouting trip.” 6:56:49 AM 5/14/04 “"rooves???" Hey Prosecutor... if a few of us go on Crazy Mike's Memorial Day weekend North Country Trail trip, do you have a key hidden somewhere by that cabin? And some venison burritos handy to be reheated? hheheheheehehe” 8:17:07 AM 5/14/04
